Netflix may have revealed The Punisher series to debut in 2017

Netflix, Marvel Studios, Jon Bernthal, The Punisher, Comic Book, Superhero

Last month at Comic Con, I was in the audience when Jon Bernthal dropped in to tease the upcoming standalone series featuring The Punisher. Bernthal was one of the major highlights of Daredevil's second season which made it exciting to learn that Frank Castle would finally get a showcase the iconic character has long deserved. But, with Luke Cage premiering next month and Iron Fist and The Defenders coming next year, it didn't seem likely that we would see The Punisher on his own until 2018.

If this latest reveal is to be believed, we may be getting to see him much earlier than that. A user on Reddit posted the below screenshot from the Netflix mobile app.

Netflix, Marvel Studios, Jon Bernthal, The Punisher, Comic Book, Superhero

I can confirm that this image is not fake. If you login to your Netflix mobile app, the date does in fact show 2017. This does not, however, show on the Netflix website. It is also interesting to note that while Luke Cage and Iron Fist simply say "coming soon", there is no 2017 tag on The Defenders. Could this just be a placeholder or is The Punisher in fact coming next year?

Jeph Loeb and Netflix honcho Ted Sarandos have promised less lag time between Marvel series on the streaming service but they also don't want to oversaturate the market, either. Both Jessica Jones and Daredevil are set for additional seasons which may not arrive until 2018 at this point. I have been content with two series per year but I am also not opposed to more as long as the quality is still there. Hopefully this is not a cruel typo and we are going to see Frank Castle unleash hell very soon.

Stay tuned for details as this develops. Until further notice, we can assume The Punisher's debut season will premiere in 2017.
