If you were anywhere near Comic Con last week, you probably saw the giant AVATAR banners which featured Sam Worthington all gussied up as a blue-skinned Na’vi. On first glance, you might confuse this new poster with that one, but as you’ll see this is a new alien entirely, and is actually Zoe Saldana’s character in the film. How you turn Zoe Saldana from sexy to terrifying is a mystery to me, and only a special effects wizard like James Cameron would be able to pull that off.

It’s clear that it’s going to be a bit of a challenge to keep track of the Na’vi when the action picks up, if it’s already a task to tell Worthington from Saldana in the posters. I also like how it advertises that Cameron as the director of TITANIC, which has so much to do with this movie. You think you'd go with ALIENS or TERMINATOR there.

Alright folks, time to chop this thing up and make it a desktop wallpaper. Click through for a bigger version.

it's not a bad idea
to say that avatar is directed by the guy who made the biggest movie...EVER. I think that should be enough to put people in seats at the theatre

hmmm, looks iffy
why would a poster for the biggest movie of the year not have a release dat on it? or for that matter even a "coming winter 2009" or even a simple "2009"? every single banner during comic con has had a logo stating "james camerons Avatar", why doesn't this? is he simply feeling too big headed (he is after all top of the world, that's a big crown)?

oh and is it just me or does...

oh and is it just me or does that look pretty much nothing like zoe saldana? i thought the whole point was that the avatars themselves all look like the humans inside them?

i hope it's real, but i can't help but remain a little wary of it. i don't see why they would show her na'vi this soon to the trailer release, surely it makes more sense to put off showing a full on na'vi head until after "Avatar day"?

People forget
ALL James Cameron movies are LOVE STORIES w NUKES. Terminator> Kyle+Sarah Aliens>Ripley+Newt+Hicks The Abyss> Bud+Lindsay Terminator 2> Sarah+John+Arnie True Lies> Harry+Helen Titanic>Jack+Rose

And the TITANIC was essentially the metaphor of destruction for the splitting of the atom. I imagine we'll see a nuc-u-lar explosion in AVATAR : )

In my opinion, I think that Cameron has been doing this perfectly, I mean he's been thinking about how to do this for 14 years now. I've occasionally thought of how you could move just a little bit away from trailers as they often ruin some movies, while having us wait so long and go to a theater to see it is a little tedious... at least we'll get to see what Cameron wants us to see in order to...

As for the poster, it's nothing more than a teaser poster, and it does that quite well for me.

I have to agree. Just not interested.
Honestly, this may be James Cameron's first dud. Aside from online fanboys, nobody knows about this movie. The "new" poster is virtually indistinguishable from the teaser poster and says absolutely nothing about the film. The only thing anyone has had to say about it thus far is that the special effects are awesome.

Cameron's never had a very deft hand with emotion and relationships. At best it comes off cheesy.

There was a time when I would have been excited about such a project. However, now it just seems to smack of Cameron's ego and not much else. It feels a bit like Lucas in the latter years.

The TITANIC reference, while understandable, doesn't really fit. It may have been hugely successful box office-wise, but unless that's the audience Cameron is hoping AVATAR will appeal to (God, I hope not), it's a bit of a failed marketing choice. Oh, and I hate to say it, but the character design here looks kinda lame. A little too CLONE WARS for my tastes ...

Uh...
The put Director of Titanic on there because 1. Titanic won a shit load of awards for being a great movie. and 2. This is also a love story, so you can expect it to be a very good one.

Can't wait for a trailer, and mentioning arguably the biggest movie of all time in the poster? Yes, that makes no sense at all... Why would they do such a thing?

Yeah, I agree. I know that the fanboys have built up unattainable expectations for themselves, but this film is begging to bomb. There is no reason for there to be no trailer by now. These posters are lame, and I don't know anyone who is going to drive out to the theater to watch a preview.

I enjoy Cameron's films, but his ego/boldness could be the death of this film. He cannot sufficiently sell a movie this big on hype alone.

I have to agree with it not being very attractive. They could have used a little more backlight to a little reality to it. Why spend so much time on details if it won't even look real in the end?

Poster looks good. It's smart to put the director of Titanic because its his most recent film in common audiences mind and its the top grossing film of all time. Here's hoping Avatar lives up to the hype.
