New badass trailer and poster for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is the best so far

Nov. 4, 2013by: Paul Shirey

Naturally, there's some folks who aren't quite as excited for THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG after the first entry failed to win over audiences the same as the original THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy did. However, after watching this new trailer I suspect that a lot of the skeptics may change their tune a bit. Dark, rousing, and full of new footage, this new extended trailer makes its case for our cash next month, of which I'm happy to part with. Now that we're done with the set-up with the first film, I'm excited to "get down to business" with this next entry and if this trailer is any indication, we're in for a hell of a show.

Check it out:

Although I'd agree that Peter Jackson and co. may have gotten overzealous in extending what was originally two films into three, they're so chock full of passion for the material that it's really hard to find a complaint that doesn't sound like whining. With additional (and some returning) castmembers Lee Pace, Evangeline Lilly, Orlando Bloom, Luke Evans, and Benedict Cumberbatch joining in the adventure, the ante has been upped for some good old fashioned Middle Earth coolness. Shit, just hearing Cumberbatch as Smaug is enough to get me a little giddy for this one.

THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG hits theaters on December 13, 2013.

In all honesty the only thing I disliked about the first installment was too many CGI enemies compared to the the amount of physical effects in the original LOTR movies.

Other than that it was exactly what I was expecting. It was for a younger audience than LOTR and far more whimsical, but so is the source material so that's no bad thing. I never got the complaints about the pacing as I felt like I was sitting back and just letting the story and experience of middle-earth wash over me like I

Pacing is very difficult to complain about with movies this long. I feel like you have to watch them with a different set of expectations to any other movies.

First one was great and I'm down for the second. Not on the level of LOTR, but still damn good fantasy.

Looks good, but the Red camera does not fit this kind of movie. It just looks ugly. Whenever I watch LotR and then pop on The Hobbit, I am shocked by the massive downgrade in image quality. LotR looked so real and alive, and The Hobbit looks like soap opera shot on video. It cheapens the experience, though I did still enjoy the film for what it was.

Tickets bought

The first HOBBIT movie wasn't perfect but I enjoyed it, and I could see Peter Jackson was setting up a lot of plot points that should come together in this and the third film. Thorin's hatred of the elves, his deepening friendship with Bilbo that will be tested over the Arkenstone, who is the Necromancer of Dul Guldur - there are a lot of cool elements kicking in.

The Hobbit

Looking forward to this, but I hope it has less slapstick than the first film in the trilogy. Smaug looks pretty epic and Cumberbatch's voice sounds perfect.

That was pretty badass. The first trailer didn't do much for me but my excitement level is growing and I'm sure it will increase even more by the time I get through all the extended edition documentaries.

Looks great, as do all Peter Jackson trailers

Seeing the eye of Sauron makes me smile all over again. Looks amazing, and hopefully it is. I very much enjoyed "An Unexpected Journey" only it did not have a lasting feel like "The Fellowship of The Ring" did. Can't wait to see what new and un-expecting surprises Peter Jackson and company bring to this new trilogy.

I sense more

Specifically, they imply that Bilbo is there to burgle the Arkenstone which will then give Thorin the right to rule as King. That's BS if it is true. Hopefully it's some really poor editing, but i doubt it. This smacks of PJ's heavy-handed changes like he made to LOTR (anyone remember the character assassination he did on Faramir???).

Of course the book's explanation of Bilbo being there is kinda ridiculous too...to burgle the mountain from under a sleeping dragon. That's always been one

Of course the book's explanation of Bilbo being there is kinda ridiculous too...to burgle the mountain from under a sleeping dragon. That's always been one of the weakest parts of the story...there is no logical reason why he's there, but it takes Smaug point it out to Bilbo before Bilbo sees the illogic of his situation. So one might forgive PJ for putting in a more realistic reason.

I was pretty under whelmed by the first one. This one looks a tad better. The biggest Issue I have with Peter Jackson is, he cant pace a movie to save is life. But The Hobbit is not entirely his fault. When you spread one book across three movies, your gonna have some time to kill. :)

Looks a lot better than the first Hobbit. Which looked and felt more like a theme park ride than a movie.

Seriously

It was the same as the other trailers, where was there any action in that. This looks like another snoozefest. I;m sorry to say this movie is outdated. I love jackson but move on already man. I'll still see it because trailers for these films never do justice but I'm keeping my hopes really down I hope it turns out to be better the #1

That felt like a trailer for a Michael Bay movie.

Also, why does Legolas look so weird?

Couldn't

Get past the first hour of the first movie (horrible stuff it was too). I doubt I'll watch this, won't be going to see it in the cinema for sure anyway. Probably torrent it!

I've given up on The Hobbit. I refuse to watch the sequels.

The first one was so damn boring. Jackson and crew really screwed up by making The Hobbit into three movies.

While I agree that The Hobbit should only be two movies, I don't see how anyone could "refuse" to watch a master storyteller in his prime enviroment. An Unexpected Journey, while far from perfect, was still a better movie than 90% of the drivel that spews forth from the loins of Hollywood.
Taker easy, bro.

"Take it easy bro"??? Avatard, you have way more hostile diction in your comment than bob_loblaw. I'll take it a step further - I didn't even see the first hobbit, nor did I watch the trailer. If I see the trailer at the movies, or hear great word of mouth about the film, I feel confident that I can just step right in to the sequel and be fine. I was out as soon as I heard he was making 3 movies out of the book, and I guess these films are his baby, or he has a great relationship with the

I was out as soon as I heard he was making 3 movies out of the book, and I guess these films are his baby, or he has a great relationship with the Tolkien family, but I wish he would make some different films, as I can't argue about how talented Jackson is. It's just really unheard of for a filmmaker to spend this much time on one series straight. I just want to see his TinTin sequel and more original stuff like the frighteners

I think this is the whole reason Jackson didn't want to direct this trilogy is because he knew how much work this story needs like the first three LOTR's. I think it's selfish to hate on one project a director is doing because you want him to direct something else. Yes The Hobbit isn't perfect, but it's still fun to watch from a book we've all read as children. I think it's great Jackson and crew have undertaken this world again, instead of it falling into the hands of a wannabe Michael Bay.
