New details on the Han Solo and Josh Trank-less Star Wars Anthology movies

08.13.2015

In addition to their feelings at getting Harrison Ford back as Han Solo for STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, Entertainment Weekly was able to probe Kathleen Kennedy and Lawrence Kasdan for more details surrounding the STAR WARS ANTHOLOGY films that are in development. While Gareth Edwards' ROGUE ONE is currently in production, the details are still sparse on the Han Solo origin film as well as the movie that was going to be helmed by Josh Trank.

Kathleen Kennedy on why they are making a Han Solo film.

“There’s got to be a reason for [the stand-alone film] to be. And obviously the thing that Star Wars has always done so well is it doesn’t spend a lot of time [explaining] the stories that have come before. We don’t want to do that either. We don’t want to spend time going back and answering a lot of questions that, quite frankly, I don’t think people want answered.”

How old will Han be in the film?

“He’ll definitely be probably in the high teens, low 20s,” Kennedy says. “We’re not introducing you to a 10-year-old Han Solo.”

Kennedy also went into the fact that we may see characters like Greedo and Chewbacca in the film as well as the fact that it will be funny. The choice of 21 JUMP STREET directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller should have cemented that this movie will feature the smart-ass character we have come to know and love.

With the Han Solo film being announced, Kennedy also shed some light as to where things stand with the film Josh Trank was set to direct. With the Han Solo film sliding into that movie's original 2018 date, the film Trank was developing is now looking likely to be the third film, debuting in 2020, a year after EPISODE IX.

“It’s still one of the stories that we absolutely want to tell,” she says. “There is a lot of innovative technology in and around what it is we’re doing with that story, so for a lot of reasons, we were comfortable postponing that. But we’re definitely still developing it.”

What that film could be is still a mystery (some sources claim it is about Boba Fett) but from the fact it will require innovative technology could mean that it is unlike anything we have seen so far.. Here's hoping that whoever takes it over is more adept at working with others than Trank was.

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS opens on December 18th. STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE debuts on December 16, 2016. STAR WARS: HAN SOLO opens May 25, 2018.

I just can't get excited about any of this

A big part of the appeal of the original trilogy (the biggest part I would argue) was the originality. A new universe that wasn't an adaptation of a comic or a novel but that was only created for cinema isn't something that we've seen a lot of since. After 6 movies, a bunch of novels, comics and animated TV shows, the factor "new" is pretty much gone and the fact that Disney has so many Star Wars projects announced makes each of them feels less special than it should.

No interest in a Han Solo film. I'd be more interested in a film based on a more obscure or completely original character.

Just as a note.

Who was the more popular character in Star Wars. The Tweenie Luke Skywalker or the more mature Han Solo? When did Skywalker become more interesting? When he was not a tweenie anymore perhaps?
Why would you revert the most popular character from the original film to an age that most fans would not relate to? Tweenie films have had their day, Tweenilight and the Hunger Games have their following but Tweenifilms are few and far between. A Young Han Solo is ok if you are going that direction but

Angst? Did we just read the same article?? Said is was gonna have a comedic focus, that's why they wanted the jump street guys. For me though, couldn't care less, throw Star Wars on the title and I'm there opening weekend, even the cartoons lol

"...so for a lot of reasons, we were comfortable postponing [Trank film] that."
Reason #1: Finding a new director.

It would make sense. Han looks to be in his 30s in the originals (though I know Harrison Ford was older), so to have any real history that isn't immediately before the events of the original trilogy a late teens/early 20s Han seems right. As long as the character is that age and the actor isn't. Nobody wants a hashtag using Han Solo.
