It seems like ages ago that the rumor of Nathan Fillion playing the part of Nova Prime in James Gunn's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY was circulating. We know now that the character didn’t end up in the movie, but what would Nova (Richard Rider) have looked like? Wonder no more! Available in stores August 12th is “Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy: The Art of the Movie”, which offers a look at all the concept art, character, vehicle and weapon designs that went into making the movie including Nova.

Here is what Nova might have looked like on the big screen:

It’s possible that he will show up in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2; cutting him from the first movie makes a lot of sense considering the amount of superhuman abilities already on show. For now we wait and ogle at the concept art.

Here are other pieces of art that will be featured the art book including concept art of the Badoon, who were changed into Sakaarans for the film, as Fox owns screen rights to the Badoon.

The rumor was NOT that Nathan Fillion would be playing Nova Prime: Glenn Close played Nova Prime in the movie. And according to the credits, Nathan Fillion did appear in the movie as one of the prison inmates, obviously under a lot of makeup and with no lines.

Seriously, guys, are you telling me you watched the movie and didn't realize that the Nova Corps were in the movie?

If this Nova pictured here is supposed to Richard Rider then that is a HUGE spoiler because it means that Richard Rider is Starlord's father. Or perhaps Starlord's father is Adam Warlock. James Gunn has confirmed that Adam Warlock will be in the next movie so... maybe. But the idea that Richard Rider knocked up Starlord's mom and then left Earth to join the Nova Corps makes more sense.

EDIT: After reading up about Adam Warlock, my guess is that Richard Rider becomes Adam Warlock after acquiring the soul Gem. This would be the simplest solution.

He was the voice of the giant blue inmate who got Groot's fingers up his nostrils.

Star lord's father is J'Sonn, ruler of Spartax and an important galactic ruler. He crashed on Earth near where Peter's mother was living and they fell in love. He left because he had responsibilities, but swore to return. Peter calls himself Star-Lord because, as you learn when he reads his mother's letter at the end, that is what she always called him, as it is his actual royal title (though she never shared that with him, or the truth about his father)

It looks like the Marvel Now look, pretty badass. I prefer the gold one that looks like Dr.Fate's helmet though.

That's pretty cool, but just to be clear - is this concept art FOR Richard Rider, or just concept art for the Nova Corps in general? Because the naming here is a bit mixed up (and the only reason I know this is because I recently stumbled across a forgotten issue of "Nova" that it turns out I own).

Nova Prime is the title given to the leader of the Nova Corps. That's why Glenn Close's character was called that in the film. In the comics, there's a lone surviving Xendarian (the reason is spoilers I think?) imbued with all of the Nova Corps' power who is called Super Nova, and a small piece of that power is shared by Richard Rider on Earth, who just calls himself "Nova". Later, after a shit-ton of revelatory exposition, he's given Super Nova's power as well and becomes an extremely powerful superhuman, but he still calls himself Nova after that as far as I can tell. Maybe he takes charge of a new Nova Corps later, at which point he'd be the new Nova Prime, but in the issue I own he's just an earth-based superhero still.

Wasn't Glenn Close's character named Nova Prime?
