New image from The Hunger Games reveals key scene

Jan. 19, 2012by:

Lion’s Gate has released another new image from the upcoming HUNGER GAMES today, which highlights a very specific moment that readers of the series will recognize.

Cinna (Lenny Kravitz), who serves as a PR-type liason in the book, has designed very specific costumes for the lead characters Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (some dude) that correspond with the district they’re from. In this instance, district 12 is represented by miners, hence the coal-colored costumes.

The finishing touch, naturally, is to set these two characters on fire. Naturally. In the pic, you can see Cinna in the foreground about to apply the finishing touch to the costumes just before their introduction at the opening ceremony of the games.

t’s a pivotal moment in the book, one that alters the perception of both characters and helps to pave their way to winning favor with viewers.

I read the book last month to see what all the fuss was about and wasn’t exactly floored by it. It’s competent enough with a few unique characters, but it’s ripe for expansion on film. It didn’t peak my interest enough to finish the series, but I am looking forward to seeing it onscreen. I think it’s actually a property that works better as a movie than a book.

The book's author, Suzanne Collins, was partly inspired for the idea while watching reality TV, so it’s a fitting venue to see it onscreen. You certainly don’t have to read the book to enjoy the film, unless the film is a total mess, which seems unlikely given the care they’ve put into it.

The games begin on March 23, 2012.  Please don't set yourself on fire at a midnight screening.

Extra Tidbit: I thought Jennifer Lawrence really impressed in Winter's Bone.

Cinna is a stylist, not a PR-person. Effie is more of the PR person for the series. I really enjoyed the books though, at least the first one and I think that the movie is going to be really well done. With the exception of Kravitz and Hutchinson, I love everyone they've cast for the film!

Everyone I know who read the book

thought it was great. I'm looking forward to this film; I think they're doing it right.

Not a huge fan of Kravitz as an actor, but I really liked Josh Hutcherson (do your research, Paul!) in The Kids Are All Right.

I'd say The Hunger Games = Battle Royale + 1984 + Theseus myth.

Ha! Yeah, my bad. It was actually a save error. Nothing against ol' Laser. I'll go punish myself by watching Green Lantern backwards.

Thanks for strikin' back!

I always thought this book was about Zombies for some reason, before I saw the trailer. Now I realize it's about Battle Royale and 1984.

I LIKE The Hunger Games and even I can't deny how ridiculously similar it is to Battle Royale. Ah well... Nothing is original anymore anyways!

In Suzanne Collins defense, she claimed she had never even heard of Battle Royale when writing her books. In this day of age, it's hard to believe anything people say. However, I think there could be credibility to her statement. Battle Royale (films and book) are known amongst cult film fans but not really known by mainstream readers and film viewer. So, I think it's possible that she didn't rip off the Battle Royale storyline. But more of a, "great" minds think alike situation.

The problem with Suzanne Collins story is even if she never heard of Battle Royale, I'll bet her publisher knew what it was. I guess she never heard of the Running Man either. Either way, she's lying.
