New image of The Wolverine and details on the pic from director James Mangold

POTENTIAL STORY SPOILERS...but not really.

The new issue of Empire is out today and in it they talk to director James Mangold about his currently filming THE WOLVERINE with Hugh Jackman.  Aside from calling the film "Japanese noir picture with tentpole action in it" the director revealed a bit of a doozy, saying, "Where this film sits in the universe of the films is after them all.  Jean Grey is gone, most of the X-Men are disbanded or gone, so there’s a tremendous sense of isolation for him."

The resounding thought has been that even though this was a "stand-alone" movie, it would still follow the lineage of X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE.  Apparently not.  And that's damn fine by me.  Interestingly, though, the story they are modelling THE WOLVERINE after took place much earlier in Wolverine's history (in the comics).  However, it's very obvious that they will be jumping around in time, as we've seen set pics of World War II camps and the picture below tells a story all its own as those look to be, in fact, Logan's bone claws.

Have a look:

Mangold went on to say the the story will take place primarily outside of the X-Men's film continuity as Wolverine falls in love with Mariko, the daughter of gang boss Tao Okamoto, inciting a vicious gang war. "That’s something that for me was very important, that I land in a very specific place in his timeline," says Mangold. "I wanted to be able to tell the story without the burden of handing it off to a film that already exists and having to conform to it. The ideas of immortality reign very heavily in this story and the burden of immortality weighs heavily on Logan. For me that’s such an interesting part of Logan’s character that is nearly impossible to explore if you have a kind of league or team movie."

Interesting.  With the recent rumor of Famke Janssen reportedly filming a scene for the film, it leaves me wondering how she fits into the overall timeline.  Compelling stuff, if it's true.  So far, I'm feeling very confident about THE WOLVERINE. I was anxious in the beginning, but with the bits we've seen and heard from the film thus far, my confidence continues to build in the pic.  Like most fans of the character, I just want to see a film that encapsulates all the elements that make him more than just a "mutant with claws."  It seems very possible we may well get that.

Here's the synopsis:

Based on the celebrated comic book arc, THE WOLVERINE finds Logan, the eternal warrior and outsider, in Japan. There, samurai steel will clash with adamantium claw as Logan confronts a mysterious figure from his past in an epic battle that will leave him forever changed.

THE WOLVERINE, Starring Hugh Jackman, Will Yun Lee, Hiroyuki Sanada, Rila Fukushima, and Svelta Khodchenkova cuts into theaters on July 26, 2013.

Okay, the bone claws are a surprise. I think this really will make up for X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and then some. What with Iron Man 3, Man of Steel, Thor: The Dark World and The Wolverine, 2013 seems to shaping up really well for superhero flicks, and I hope they're all good!

I would not want to mess with Hugh. The dude is a beast. Pun intended.

He's going to have both bone and adamantium claws in the movie. He's only going to have bone claws in the flashback scenes that take place in a World War 2 Japanese POW camp. The rest of the movie is going to take place in Japan in the late 80s after the events of X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

To the people talking about bone claws.

Just a guess. But by the looks of his pants, they look like military clothing. Suggesting that this might be when he was in the military during a flashback sequence. Just a thought.

And if that is true, then he might have roots in Japan from WWII that he goes back to rediscover in the present day. Which is cool as hell.

Biggest question

Do you guys think we'll finally get the costume in this one?! I'd love to see Hugh in the brown and yellow

As much as I think this movie will be awesome, the fact that they're making it a sequel to the x-men trilogy instead of a prequel somehow bugs me. I don't even know why. All I know if the x-men film universe must have more holes than any film series I can think of.

If this takes place after X3 (or X2 if you prefer to imagine 3 didn't happen) then does that mean that he somehow loses the adamantium plating or does that screen cap somehow take place before the other movies in a flash back perhaps. I know in the video of Jackman doing Gangnam Style he has the metal claws still.

I'm sorry, but I just have to get this out.
What makes Wolverine so cool and more than just a mutant with claws is that he's a badass, hairy, quiet, borderline feral, madman who sits in the back and interjects with one liners and threats. The fact that he's the lead role for the 5th time is annoying to high hell. I know he's popular and all, but not every Batman movie has the Joker in it. X2 and Origins were the only ones that made sense to have him do anything else but drink beer, kick ass,

And the thought that "Hey, this is the story set in Japan, so like, maybe this will make up for Origins". First, NOTHING CAN MAKE UP FOR THAT. Second, we said the same thing about Origins in reference to X3 and Batman and Robin in reference to Batman Forever. See how those turned out? Stop throwing him in our faces (especially now that they've decided to streamline the process and forget the xmen even exist after screwing them all up anyway) and just reboot the whole universe already. I know of a certain director of a certain highest grossing non-James Cameron film that just so happened to write of the best stories in Xmen history and it even had Shield in it. How bout that...

Looks like this has strayed from the original incarnation of The Wolverine. That's a shame. I hope it will be good, but I kind of lost my excitement for this movie.
