New images from Neil Blomkamp's Elysium featuring Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, and Sharlto Copley

Yesterday, we finally got a look at DISTRICT 9 director Neil Blomkamp's ELYSIUM, starring Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, and Sharlto Copley and it was an impressive slice of sci-fi cinema to be sure. It looked more like an evolution of Blomkamp's DISTRICT 9 than a wholly new genre piece as he's not budging much from his class warfare themes and epic sci-fi weapons and gadgets. Still, the movie looks like a blast and has more than enough visual punch and characters to move past any of the "sameness" from DISTRICT 9, which stands as one of my all-time favorite sci-fi pics.

Now that the cat's out of the bag, the studio has opened up the official site and started sharing more images and info on the film, starting with a nice batch of new images featuring the cast (as well as the director) in their various get-ups from the film. I'm most looking forward to seeing Sharlto Copley as a villain more than anything. We already know that Damon can play a bad ass and Foster can play whatever she wants, but Copley as a sadistic villain is something entirely new and I look forward to the scene-chewing smorgasbord that will ensue.

Here's the pics:

Here's the synopsis:

In the year 2159, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. The people of Earth are desperate to escape the planets crime and poverty, and they critically need the state-of-the-art medical care available on Elysium but some in Elysium will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve their citizens luxurious lifestyle. The only man with the chance to bring equality to these worlds is Max (Matt Damon), an ordinary guy in desperate need to get to Elysium. With his life hanging in the balance, he reluctantly takes on a dangerous mission one that pits him against Elysiums Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster) and her hard-line forces but if he succeeds, he could save not only his own life, but millions of people on Earth as well.

ELYSIUM, starring Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, William Fichtner, Alice Braga, Diego Luna, and Wagner Moura starts pitting the dirty poor vs. the filthy rich on August 9, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: Blomkamp is hesitant to take on an established franchise, but I'd be happy to see him take on ANY of them: Aliens, Predator, Star Wars, Star Trek, The Terminator, etc. What established franchise would YOU like to see him tackle?

Extra Tidbit

I like you suggestions. I'd also say Hellboy 3. Obviously I'd prefer Del Toro, but sadly it seems like that isn't likely to happen so Blomkamp is a great option.

This movie really looks great. He always has a deeper meaning to his sci-fi tales. I would have loved to see Blomkamp take on the Terminator.

Blomkamp shows promise because he is a man devoted to telling his own stories with no restrictions on creativity because of an already established fan base. That being said, I'd love to see him do a Predator film. But if he were to do Star Wars, it should be a standalone story.

Matt Damon is going to rock! Can't wait for this. And Extra Tidbit, his own.

Damon looks like full on Jason Bourne in this film.

To answer the Tidbit, I think Neill Blomkamp would be more than ideal for an ODST movie. I mean, he could probably make an excellent Halo movie, but I really want to see him make an ODST movie specifically.
