New Line says Shazam will have a sense of fun; screenwriter confirmed

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

It’s been all about Dwayne Johnson and the Shazam movie today, so let’s keep it rolling I say. As we know now, Johnson will portray Black Adam in the film, which I think is great. He has the charisma and energy for a role like that; he’s destined to bring it. So what about the tone of the upcoming movie? We have some official words from New Line president Toby Emmerich on the subject, thanks for asking. He also empathized how this is not a Justice League character interestingly enough.

EW spoke with Emmerich who told them:

“It feels to me like Shazam will have a tone unto itself. It’s a DC comic, but it’s not a Justice League character, and it’s not a Marvel comic. The tone and the feeling of the movie will be different from the other range of comic book movies.”

Emmeruch talked about the “fun” aspect of the movie:

“Black Adam is a complex character. The villain in superhero movies is often, I think, what makes the movie. And I thought Dwayne’s take on the character, and the way that he saw Black Adam, was really compelling and fun.”

I totally agree with him there; the villain is what makes these movies, it’s why there’s a story obviously but also I find them to be more complex and interesting than our superheroes. Some might agree that Black Adam joins the long list of antihero’s that we have come to admire in a way. While Emmerich didn’t provide much more information on the plot of the film, we now know that JACK THE GIANT SLAYER and GOOSEBUMPS scribe Darren Lemke will pen the script.

The movie is rumored to be scheduled for 2016, after BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, so if that’s true, things should start moving pretty quickly on this movie.
