New Melancholia character posters feature what may be the film's biggest character of all

Sep. 28, 2011by: George Merchan

I think I've mentioned before that Danish director Lars Von Trier is essentially a troll filmmaker. I really don't think that's too off the mark. But what I love about the guy - apart from his films which I think are great - is that he's obviously got a weird and twisted sense of humor that he's not afraid of putting on display.

I feel that that's clearly in evidence today with the appearance of a new set of character posters for his latest film MELANCHOLIA. Von Trier obviously told someone "F*ck you, I'm doin' it cuz I can!" and actually inserted himself in one of the film's posters. And strangely enough, it's totally apropos. The biggest character in any Von Trier film is most certainly always Von Trier. I love it.

MELANCHOLIA opens in limited release on November 11th.

Synopsis: In this beautiful movie about the end of the world, Justine (Kirsten Dunst) and Michael (Alexander Skarsgard) are celebrating their marriage at a sumptuous party in the home of her sister Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg), and brother-in-law John (Kiefer Sutherland). Despite Claires best efforts, the wedding is a fiasco, with family tensions mounting and relationships fraying. Meanwhile, a planet called Melancholia is heading directly towards Earth...

Best movies of the year so far...

DRIVE, MELANCHOLIA, and HANNA. As for these posters, I dont know. The one with Kirsten Dunst, in the wedding dress, gives off the tone much better.

Exactly what I said when I saw it. MELANCHOLIA is really great, such a poetic, beautiful, and yes, depressing, film.

I've already seen the movie. All my friends loved it, but I just liked it. It didn't give me the same emotional rush than Dogville or Dancer in The Dark.

That last poster is too funny. I can't wait to see this movie, don't know why. PS-where did Kirsten's big boobies go?

Sounds really good and it has Eric and Jack Bauer in it. Definitely seeing this.

All Jack Bauer needs to do is fly into outerspace and destroy the planet with one punch of his fists.

Absolutely loved Melancholia

Great posters. Von Trier is a "prankster" in the same sense as Orson Welles. Disregard the man/the director, and just enjoy the film.
"Melancholia" is in my top five, right up there with "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy", "Drive", "Warrior" and "Tree of Life". 2011 turned out to be a pretty great year after all...
