New P. Morris trailer

I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS

A little while back, a promo for the upcoming Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor starring dark comedy I LOVE YOU, PHILLIP MORRIS was making the rounds and today, the folks over at "Jim Carrey Online" managed to uncover an international trailer. It's a lot of the same that was shown in the promo, with some brief NSFW bits and a few new scenes.

In the film, Carrey stars as real life con man Steve Russell who goes to jail for his various exploits and falls in love with the titular inmate. Hilarity, conning and apparently pretty graphic sex ensues. Carrey "loves" Phillip Morris on February 5th next year. Check out the trailer below.

Yikes...

This one is going to be a hugely difficult film for any major studio to market, especially post-Bruno. Carrey isn't a guaranteed box office draw anymore and here he seems to be pushing the boundaries of his mainstream appeal to the limit. Looks fascinating though.

Must see!

Some people don't know what to expect. I can understand that, they still don't know how to sell this movie, that's clear.

But for those who are waiting for reviews ... here are some of them, posted at Sundance.

"Overall the film feels like a mixture between the silliness and absurdness of a Farelly Brothers movie, but with the inteligence of a Coen Brothers Flick. It is at times very funny and at other times very sad and touching." ,- FilmschoolRejects (1)

"Carrey is at his nimble best, his chameleonlike gyrations and falsifications are deliciously funny. His comedic versatility and impersonations are amazing, but it's in his character's darkest recesses that he's truly powerfull." ,- Hollywood Reporter

"A character so criminal and gay it will leave the audiance both laughing and stunned. Philip Morris will give some fans of Ace Ventura heart attacks." ,- Variety

"Jim Carrey gives an awesome performance in his best film since 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind', I’d say it's his best film yet. The film is hilarious but at the same time serious and the film mixes both quite nicely. The production of the movie is top notch and it’s only a matter of time before a major studio will have the balls to pick it up.” ,- LatinoReview

"Pitched in such a hysterical key it rubbed my nerves raw, ILYPM struck many observers as the one work of genuine genius we saw at Sundance this year, and they might be right.” ,- Salon

“Carrey gives an eccentric and charismatic performance, mixing some of his best absurdist stuff with some of the emotional range that we’ve seen from him in movies such as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. His ability to give this character, an otherwise deplorable and selfish conman, reminds me of Leonardo DiCaprio’s performance in Catch Me If You Can.” ,- FilmschoolRejects (2)

“Ficarra and Requa have put together a damn fine film, one that looks quite lovely, has a hilarious and fascinating script and that manages to reign in Jim Carrey enough to deliver one of the better performances of his whole career.” ,- Chud.com

“Directed by the team of Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, and supposedly based on a true story, I Love You Phillip Morris is like one of those out-of-the-frying-pan capers by the Coen brothers crossed with Catch Me If You Can, featuring a hero as blithely comfortable with the metaphysics of identity fraud as Tom Ripley.” ,- Hollywood Insider

Meh.....

I'm just not feeling this movie. I'll wait for some reviews, but I'll probably wait and rent it.

@beatrix:

Honestly - who cares if blockheads aren't going to get this movie? I'm sure it will turn off dramaphobes and homophobes alike.

It looks awesome. I've been waiting years for Carrey to be in a movie that doesn't blow. Perhaps this can brain erase the number 23 for me.

Wow.

This looks great. It's like the funny version of Bruno. And Jim Carrey can really play the perfect mixture of drama and comedy well.

Being an anal guy, I'm kinda annoyed by this. There should be a comma between 'you' and 'phillip morris'.

Honestly, I thought this was just supposed to be straight on comedy. I'd still see it though. I wonder if people are going to be turned off by Carrey in a semi-dramatic role.

I never understood that. He was amazing in Truman Show.
