New photos of Benedict Cumberbatch and Henry Cavill from Star Trek Into Darkness and Man of Steel

Star Trek Into Darkness and Man of Steel

Two of the most anticipated movies this summer each have a new picture that has been released: STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS and MAN OF STEEL. I don't know about you but I was having a geek overload on Tuesday when the new trailers for the films were released on the same day. There's nothing in these pictures that we haven't seen before from the films but the images will still get you excited that these movies are inching closer and closer to their release dates.

First up is STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS: MTV has an exclusive image on their Tumblr of Benedict Cumberbatch as John Harrison. I'm not going to get into if he's Khan or not. At this point to me it doesn't matter: I just want to see the damn film already. Also, does anyone know where I can purchase a John Harrison jacket? Not the one from this image because it's pretty much a poncho but the jacket from the trailer and poster is pretty snazzy.

Star Trek Into Darkness

Yahoo! Movies has a new picture from MAN OF STEEL of Henry Cavill as Superman that is part of a slideshow celebrating the character's 75th birthday. I really dig some of the small details on the costume. Previous outfits for Superman were very much superhero costumes while this outfit almost seems like a uniform and more...organic I guess is the word I'm looking for? Like it's a part of him as opposed to just being an outfit that he changes into when he's inside a phone booth.

Man of Steel

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS hits theaters May 17th, 2013 and MAN OF STEEL will be released on June 4th, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: Which film do you think will gross more this summer: STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS or MAN OF STEEL?

I really like the looks of Superman but I also want to see him in Clark Kent costume.

Both of them look like they'll kick their fair share of ass. I wonder how Cumberbatch will stack up against Michael Shannon. I think I'm completely sold on the way that Superman costume looks now.

It's going to be a good summer for [link] for Star Trek, Shannon for Man of Steel, and Copley for Esylium.

I think I like Cumberbatch's villain better but to be honest not much of Zod has been actually shown in action

Cavill looks perfect as Superman. Like he just walked right out of the comics.

Cannot wait to see both! Extra Tidbit: I think Star Trek will make more mainly because of the built in fan base, Superman is the tougher to sell film.

Star Trek was a hit but it wasn't huge worldwide. It "only" did $385 million globally. There's a real good chance it could do over $400 million domestically though and like $600 million total because of the 3-D, expanded foreign markets, awareness from the first film, etc. It's a huge increase but I think it's possible. Man of Steel? I really have no clue...probably $280mil to $350 mil US and $550 mil for a global total.

Yes Superman has potential, but who remembers the awful taste of "Superman Returns"? There's already a built in hate group that hates everything about new Superman films.

Umm, Superman has a pretty damn large fanbase too, probably bigger than Star Trek's.

I get the feeling that Superman's suit is actually Jor-El's costume sans the armor parts. It does look more alien than the traditional Superman costume, which I think is what the movie was striving for. This Superman has to look definitely like he's not from Earth, to emphasize his detachment from humanity. In that regard the costume works perfectly.

Anyone think for the potential Man of Steel sequels, Superman's suit will change from this to the iconic suit with red underwear? Like how Amazing Spider Man 2 has a new Spidey costume from the first one.

It's just that Moonrider made a good point regarding the suit.

I think the movie is actually more similar in tone with Superman: Earth One than the New 52. Costume changes can happen, but they'll have to come up with a plausible reason for it. Now what could be the plausible reason for this Superman to wear red undies in the sequel? His rubber pants got ripped and he just sort of covers it up because it's hard to sew it back on? Could work, yes. :P

I think you're right MickLoud. BUT the 'new 52' armor has a red belt, and I think they should have put it on the new movie suit as well...

Yeah. You've got a point. It would be interesting though to see Cavill don the other Superman suit.

Not necessarily though. The costume they have in the movie, even it's background, resembles the character from the "New 52". If DC manages to continue with that continuity, I don't think they'll approve for the change to red underwear in the future. I think they'll want the movies to keep the same costime in an effort to keep continuity with their comics.

So that new Supes costume looks pretty cool and all, however the more I look at it the more I see it for what it is...which is essentially molded rubber.

I mean how does he put that on as a character? It doesn't look like a comfortable outfit you can stick on to save the world, more like something he needs to grease up first for, then opens the tear in the back whilst a team of people slide him in. Like an uncomfortable wetsuit.

I'm not being pessimistic, neither am I getting down on the

I'm not being pessimistic, neither am I getting down on the movie. Cavill looks incredible, the movie looks great. I'm just making a passing observation more than anything else. Like Captain America's costume looks like a uniform, Iron Man's is self explanatory, Hawkeye wore just pants and a vest, Thor wore regular boots and trousers and even his vest looked like it went on very much like a knights suit of armour would (with added cape attachment), all of the X-Men wear various leather jackets and pants.

Even Spidey's suit looks more like just a flexible wetsuit now (which would make sense considering how he contorts his body, although how he sticks to walls through a wetsuit and boots is beyond me) whereas Supers looks like one well stretched lunge would tear a whole in his crotch. Like you could take him out of his suit and prop it up against a wall and it would stay in perfect shape. His costume has more in common with the older Batsuits than anything remotely comfortable.

Once again, as per my comments on Beast's various X-Men make-up, I have no idea where I'm going with all of this.

Er....ummm.....Hey look it's the Goodyear Blimp!! ......*runs away*

Both movies are looking fantastic. I absolutely loved the last Star Trek film, and I think ST2 looks to be a great follow-up. I agree with Jesse, I'm so far beyond if Cumberbatch is supposed to be Khan that I don't care anymore. I just want the movie to come out. If he is Khan, great! If he's not, than kudos to Abrams for creating yet another villain to add into the Star Trek canon.

As for Man of Steel, this is my most anticipated film of the year. Ever since I heard about this going into pre-production I've been waiting for this movie to come out. It looks to be the best adaptation of the character yet, my apologies to Christopher Reeve, but the movies certainly needed an update after so many years. And Cavill in that pic just becomes Superman!
Extra-Tidbit: It's tough to call, but I think Man of Steel will be better at the box office. Star Trek will do great, but it's been years since a great Superman film has been on screen. I think there are more people eager to see Man of Steel than a sequel to Star Trek.

Superman looks great - they are really getting the New 52 look and feel. In the current comics Superman's suit just kind of transforms on to him. Something like Tron - so I guess they are doing that here?

Bob - Have you read any of the new 52 stuff? H'el on Earth was really good! (not to mention other non-Superman stuff, like Batman and Animal man). Not sure why you hate it? If it's the costume then thats that. I am an old-school guy and will always consider the classic costume as best, but I have to face the facts that things change - they have to keep these characters new and exciting for younger audiences, and Superman is still Superman. It's not like they changed his character or anything. I

Not without paying Siegel and Schuster's heirs. DC will try to avoid using the classic costume to avoid paying royalties.

Sweet

i can't wait to see both of these movies. Superman's suit looks badass, and a funny tidbit... the moment I saw the Benedict Cumberbatch photo above, it looked like there was a "Star Trek" set, and with the lighting the way it is, Benedict looks either photoshopped into the scene, or like someone put a cardboard cutout of him on a built set. Pretty funny, but awesome nonetheless. Gonna be a great summer for movies!
