New Pirates of the Caribbean 5 featurette dives into the series’ legacy

Last Updated on July 31, 2021

My first thoughts upon hearing that Disney would be turning their Pirates of the Caribbean ride into a feature film probably went along the lines of "that's the worst idea I've ever heard," except perhaps with a few expletives thrown in for good measure. Somehow, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL wound up being a hugely entertaining flick and, largely thanks to Johnny Depp's portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow, it grew into a massive franchise with the addition of DEAD MAN'S CHEST, AT WORLD'S END and ON STRANGER TIDES. Disney has released a short featurette which dives into the franchise's legacy as well as teasing what's to come in PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES. Check it out!

I wasn't overly impressed with PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES, but I must admit that I'm feeling somewhat optimistic about DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES, especially after the early reactions to its surprise screening at CinemaCon have been mostly positive, with many calling the film a return to form as well as a surprisingly fun time.

The official synopsis for PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES:

The rip-roaring adventure finds down-on-his-luck Captain Jack feeling the winds of ill-fortune blowing strongly his way when deadly ghost sailors, led by the terrifying Captain Salazar, escape from the Devil’s Triangle bent on killing every pirate at sea—notably Jack. Jack’s only hope of survival lies in the legendary Trident of Poseidon, but to find it he must forge an uneasy alliance with Carina Smyth, a brilliant and beautiful astronomer, and Henry, a headstrong young sailor in the Royal Navy. At the helm of the Dying Gull, his pitifully small and shabby ship, Captain Jack seeks not only to reverse his recent spate of ill fortune, but to save his very life from the most formidable and malicious foe he has ever faced.

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES is set for a May 26, 2017 release.
