New poster for Star Wars: The Force Awakens debut; new trailer teases

10.18.2015

Well, it's finally here. Okay, it's not the trailer you were looking for, but it's a start. The new poster for STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS has arrived and it's pretty cool, although I'm not sure this is the one I'd choose to hang in my room, as I'm positive we'll see a ton more to follow. The biggest reveals from the poster are our first official peak at Princess Leia (if she still goes by that) played once again by Carrie Fisher and what appears to be an all-new Death Star of some sort. Very interesting indeed. Luke Skywalker is still absent, even though J.J. Abrams has said he was lured to direct the film with the phrase "Who is Luke Skywalker?" Guess we'll still continue to wait to get any hint of that answer.

"The dark side...and the light..."

Now, let's get down to that trailer business, because that's what we're all really waiting for, am I right? Here's the official lowdown, so mark your calendars:

The trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens will debut on ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” on Monday, October 19, during halftime of the National Football League (NFL) game between the New York Giants and the Philadelphia Eagles in Philadelphia. The game starts at 5:15 p.m. PDT/8:15 p.m. EDT.

In addition, you can buy your advance tickets directly after the trailer launch wherever movie tickets are sold. Man, is it a good time to be a STAR WARS fan or what?

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, starring Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Max Von Sydow, hits theaters everywhere on December 18th.

Why is Rey (Daisy Ridley) kneeling over Han Solo's body and crying? Han better not die in this f*cking movie. Also, where's Luke? Why isn't he in the trailer?

Looks like Princess Leia's been hitting the Botox

I'm digging the poster. It looks a little crowded with all the legacy characters, plus the new cast, but it has a really dynamic look. I also like the the fact that Rey is front and center for this movie while Kylo Ren has his Darth Vader moment.

December 18th cannot come soon enough.

I don't know what all the complaints are really about. I think it's a great poster, very reminiscent of Struzan's work on the previous films. I will agree that I would have liked to see a tease of Luke, but I'm okay with getting my first real view of him in the film. Tonight cannot come soon enough so I can buy tickets for this film. Oh yeah, and the new trailer will be nice, but tickets first.....

Must of been quite the heated argument considering it says (65 comments), and I only count 22.

It was ridiculous and childish. You know, typical internet banter.

The look in the clips doesn't look very Star Warsy, it has the look of The Hunger Games and other young adult movies and TV shows. And I know it was shot on film, but it looks very glossy.

I see what you mean, but more like if someone tried to copy his style on Photoshop without grasping its essence and subtlety. Struzan would never have such a cluster of characters in the centre (Leia hiding behind Han, 3PO and R2 so small you don't see them, etc...). Nor would he have ships (Star Destroyers here) fly towards the centre when the others are flying outwards creating his signature "explosion" composition. He would also never have so many colours on a single poster, Struzan picks

Nor would he have ships (Star Destroyers here) fly towards the centre when the others are flying outwards creating his signature "explosion" composition. He would also never have so many colours on a single poster, Struzan picks one colour palette per poster (he will even go so far as to change the actal colour of a lightsaber if it doesn't go with the overall palette, see Shadows Of The Empire or Return Of The Jedi posters). Those green lasers on purple couldn't be farther from Struzan's colour palette. And last but not least, when seen from up close, Struzan's posters have a very natural and "sketchy" feel meaning he intentionally leaves paint drip, big pencil and brush strokes, outlines, etc... This is just photos put together... It's not the ugliest poster ever, but it's nowhere near the quality of a Struzan masterpiece.

Wow okay never thought a poster would have spoilers. If that is another Death Star I am a bit disappointed, seems like lazy writing, going back to the same well for a third time. Don't get me wrong I am still looking forward to this and hoping it can revitalize the franchise, but its kind of like seeing the new Enterprise blown up every movie, it gets old.

Not putting it down but it's a typical Star Wars poster, same quality to it as the prequel ones.
Kinda amazing that their are now enough movies to say that.

Yoda would not approve

For all those who turn healthy debate and discussion into name calling and back and forth bickering, consider this your warning that this is not the place for it and future infractions will result in being banned. Again, we're totally cool with some heated discussion, but when it gets down to name calling and bickering then the conversation is over.

Fair enough.

Would that mean that I could repost my original post, since it didn't contain the name calling and bickering that came later in response to it?

Respect, Shirey. I'm down for a good "Yo mama" or "Eat a dick" joke, but things got way out of hand. I was afraid to get involved.

Question.

Was this poster made by the same artist that did the previous Star Wars posters?

I don't think so. I know he did the first poster they released at the con a month or so ago, but this while similar in spirit, looks slightly different and more realistic than drawn. which is Drews usual style (the drawn version)

A number of different artists have produced posters throughout the decades. Probably the most popular is Drew Struzan.

This particular poster may not be a Struzan, but i'm unsure. It does have the characteristic hot to cold thing Struzan likes to do.

No, this is NOT a Drew Struzan poster. Struzan's posters are illustrated. This is a photoshop creation. I personally think it's a very good poster. I'm not putting it down. But a Drew Struzan poster it is not.

Love the poster! The teaser spots have got me even more excited. I can't say enough about how much better it looks so far without the 100% CGI everything.
