New poster for the Straw Dogs remake is just like the original only awful

06.15.2011by:

But... if the lens is broken... the reflection... what?

While this new poster for Rod Lurie's STRAW DOGS tries to recreate the stark and perfect imagery of the one sheet for Sam Peckinpah's masterful original (which you can see below), it fails by being a boring imitation with the audacity to shoehorn in a tired tagline when one was never needed in the first place. It should've tried for something equally simple as the original's while still being unique and of its own. But hey, what do you expect from a modern remake of one of the best films from the 70s?

STRAW DOGS opens September 16th.

Synopsis: David and Amy Sumner (James Marsden and Kate Bosworth), a Hollywood screenwriter and his actress wife, return to her small hometown in the deep South to prepare the family home for sale after her father’s death. Once there, tensions build in their marriage and old conflicts re-emerge with the locals, including Amy’s ex-boyfriend Charlie (Alexander Skarsgård), leading to a violent confrontation.

Agreed, although I also really like "The Ballad of Cable Hogue," "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid," and "Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia."

I don't know if "Straw Dogs" is one of the best movies of the 1970s, but it is pretty good. It's interesting to watch Peckinpah's movies for the way they show his evolution. He was a fascinating filmmaker, and still largely underrated.

What's great about the original is that they set a pair of glasses and broken glass on a photo, which gives it a creepy sense of stillness and non-realism. All this subtlety is totally lost on the Photoshop "artist" who did the homage.

i dont mind the homage to the original poster, but the guy's reflection shouldve been in the unbroken part of the glasses. this instead gives me a 'raising cain' type of feel to it.

The original has more of a raw feeling to it.

I'll give it the benefit of a doubt, sine the mainstream moviegoer has never heard of Straw Dogs. But it won't have the same effect as the original.

this poster isnt bad they stayed true to the original. Youll notice they used the dvd vhs cover art for the poster. So by saying this poster is bad your saying the dvd cover is bad too then.

wah wah wah

So tired of people bitching over and over about remakes, even if it is a 40 year old film. Now we have critics bitching about an obvious homage?

Your bitching, about the bitching, is much more refreshing.
