New fan posters for Shyamalan's After Earth and Schwarzenegger's Last Stand courtesy of Comic Con

I love that Comic Con ended five days ago and we are atill getting little tidbits of goodness. Take these two new fan posters, for instance.

The first is for the upcoming Arnold Schwarzenegger movie THE LAST STAND. From director Kim Jee-won (I SAW THE DEVIL, THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE WEIRD) THE LAST STAND follows a disgraced L.A.P.D. cop (Arnie) in a new job in a small town, who is trying to stop a drug cartel leader, Cortez (Eduardo Noriega), who has just busted out of prison and is trying to make it across the border with $400 million. Zach Gilford and Rodrigo Santoro are the team of cops on the small town force working with Ahnuld, and together they will team up against Peter Stormare who works for Cortez. Genesis Rodriguez will play an FBI agent with Johnny Knoxville, Forest Whitaker and the always awesome Harry Dean Stanton rounding out the cast.

The poster has a nice 1970s era vibe to it. Hopefully the movie feels that way too. All of Ah-nuld's movies started to blend together in the late nineties, so I hope THE LAST STAND is a unique experience. We'll see for ourselves on January 18, 2013.

We also have the first poster for M Night Shyamalan's AFTER EARTH starring Will and Jaden Smith. The viral video that came out of Comic Con was very disappointing but this poster leaves a nice image of how our world may look a thousand years in the future.

Plot: The film is set 1,000 years after cataclysmic events force humanity’s escape from Earth to Nova Prime. Legendary General Cypher Raige (Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai’s craft, they crash land on a now-unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon, giving him a chance to be a soldier like his father.

Shyamalan lost my automatic ticket after THE LADY IN THE WATER, but if a real trailer looks good, I may check out AFTER EARTH on June 7, 2013.

(UPDATE: Turns out I was punk'd on these posters.  A fan made fake.  As soon as the real one is out we will let you know.)

All things considered, Shyamalan still has more good movies to his name than bad, he also has more excellent films on his resume than a lot of filmmakers who don't receive nearly as much hate. I get that he's had some turds lately, but I don't understand quite why his stock plummeted the way it did. Unbreakable is one of my favorite films of all time, and I also love Signs, the Sixth Sense, and The Village. You don't make a string of good movies accidentally. Lulls happen. Ridley Scott is in a

Ridley Scott is in a far worse rut, lately, but people still flock to his movies. So yeah, I'll give this a chance. Here's hoping it's better than 'The Happening.'

Also, is it just me or is it a little distracting that they didn't use SteelTongs for the credits font on 'After Earth'?

6th Sense - Excellent
Unbreakable - Outstanding
Signs - Good first half...
The Village - I personally didn't hate it, but it was a bit dull
Lady in the Water - Masturbatory dreck
The Happening - Holy Shit WTF
The Last Airbender - Turned one of the greatest animated series of the past decade into one of the worst movies I have ever seen.

That list illustrates a pretty clear downturn in quality past a certain point, and certainly not more good than bad.

Accepting bets now on the twist in After Earth.

2:1- Earth was never ravaged, it was just a lie to get billions of people off the planet to ease overpopulation.
4:1-Smith and son are actually aliens, not human.
6:1-Smith and son are just cyborgs programmed to think they're human.
20:1-Smith and son are allergic to water.

3:1 - Smith and son actually did die in the crash all along, and they are now in Heaven, not a ravaged Earth.
5:1 - Will Smith is revealed to be Samuel L. Jackson, who in turn is revealed to be the one who destroyed Earth in the first place. Which, if this was the case, would secure a ticket from me.
