New screenwriter brought in for Netflix’s Bright 2 starring Will Smith

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Personally, I didn't hate Netflix's original big-budget cops-n-orcs flick BRIGHT as much as some people out there. In fact, I thought the film was commendable for its use of real locations and action sequences with very little in the way of full-blown CGI meltdowns. Plus, I thought Joel Edgerton was a delight from beginning to end and reminded me of a young Robin Williams. I may be way off base here, but that that's what I thought of the film. Sue me.

And so I'm looking forward to Netflix's upcoming sequel BRIGHT 2. Edgerton and Will Smith are all set to return, as is director David Ayer. But it looks like this time around screenwriter Max Landis is getting the boot (due to creative differences with Ayer, supposedly) and stepping up to the gritty-fantasy adventure plate is screenwriter Evan Spiliotopoulos.

Spiliotopoulos is best known around Hollywood for penning Disney's live-action BEAUTY AND THE BEAST remake and the sequel to that Kristen Stewart SNOW WHITE movie. This makes me think that BRIGHT 2 will be leaning a bit more into the realms of fantasy, and I guess that's all good by me. How the film introduced dragons into the LA skyline and then proceeded to do f*ck-all with them blows my gourd.

The original film took place in:

An alternate present day, humans, orcs, elves nd fairies have been coexisting since the beginning of time. Two police officers, one a human, the other an orc, embark on a routine night patrol that will alter the future of their world as they know it. Battling both their own personal differences as well as an onslaught of enemies, they must work together to protect a young female elf and a thought-to-be-forgotten relic, which, in the wrong hands, could destroy everything.

Eric Newman and Bryan Unkeless are returning as producers for the new film. We will make sure to keep you guys up to date on the sequel as production progresses so stay tuned! BRIGHT is now streaming on Netflix.
