New Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie gets writers

08.19.2010

Yesterday, The Wrap ran an intriguing document that purportedly contained internal information about Paramount's planned projects. Those updates included movement on WORLD WAR Z, G.I. JOE 2, Kathryn Bigelow and JJ Abrams projects, and many others.

It also mentioned that the current draft for the latest live-action update of TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES was "not great; looking for another writer to come on this quickly as its [sic] a huge Viacom priority".

Well that didn't take long -- Deadline says that the studio already has writing team  Art Marcum and Matt Holloway (IRON MAN, upcoming HIGHLANDER remake) working on the color-coded half-shell heroes, and receiving a handsome $1 million payday for it.

Deadline was also told that "The studio is looking at this as its next huge franchise, like TRANSFORMERS." They want a draft by October so they can rope a director and get the movie into theaters for 2012. A priority, indeed.

Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael are getting yet another chance to crawl from irradiated ooze courtesy of Paramount and demolitionist Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes production company. The fearless amphibians were made famous in comic books, videogames, action figures, cartoon series, CG-animation and a trilogy of past films.

Extra Tidbit: It would be criminal if this thing doesn't have Casey Jones, Shredder and the Foot Clan. Or at least Krang.

Look...

I love TMNT as much as the next guy but are we gonna see any other villans this time?
There were more characters in their universe than I could keep up with when I was growing up but if this is just another reboot with Shredder i'll fucking pass.

Turtle Power

I hope the flick follows the tone of the comics rather than the recent cartoon series. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a PG-13 on this one (a longshot I'm sure). But the biggest TMNT fans? Us 80's kids that want to see Raphael killing the shit outta some ninjas R-style. Oh yeah, and Krang would be awesome.

How many times can this series be remade?

There was a CGI film a few years ago and the live action series 20 years ago.

If it recaptures my childhood nostalgia while at the same time being entertaining and faithful to its roots, then I'm game for this. The one that came out a few years ago, TMNT, had its moments, but otherwise, had no chance of recapturing what the first live action Turtles movie was to me during my childhood or now, which is the ultimate turtles flick at this point. Apparently Platinum Dunes is reboot machine so I'm kind of wary-this is coming from someone who isn't into horror all that much so

Apparently Platinum Dunes is reboot machine so I'm kind of wary-this is coming from someone who isn't into horror all that much so remakes of classic pictures aren't something I'd check out regularly. Plus, if I was to watch the films by the studio in question, I'd honestly watch the original, not the remake. 10 times out of 10 they are always better anyway.

Anyway, I'm holding out some hope. The turtles were a big part of my life growing up, and I'd like to see them recapture their former glory.

Casey or Nothing

This had better follow the original Golden Harvest movie, with violent Casey and attitude-filled Turtles. I want the rebellious and angry Raph. Otherwise, shove it.

Turtles is good because though it works as a thing for kids, it can also work really dark and for adults. So I'm very up for them trying to do a dark version as we've seen enough kids versions, but not sure I trust anything to do with Micheal Bay or platinum dunes.

I'm glad it's a priority and super glad that they didn't just run with the first script that came around. If you were born in the 80's (and wow that's every soon to be 30 year old out there) the Turtles were a touchstone of our childhood I'd even maybe say more so than Transformers and G.I. Joe combined. So I really hope they nail this one.

Yes.

The pure amount of respect and detail that Platinum Dunes puts into revitalizing their core material is astounding and to be appreciated. Texas and F13 were GREAT remakes on so many levels. Nightmare was a little sub-par (but then again, that has always seemed like an incredibly hard franchise to reboot). And I think they'll do WONDERFUL with a non-horror franchise. This could be a great movie. Now, I'm looking forward to this.

Sorry Jaybro7, but...

The 'Nightmare on Elm Street' remake was utter garbage. 'F13' was good, I'll give you that much, but it was still nothing compared to the original. Do your homework.

On the upside, I think Platinum Dunes has a much better chance of reviving something that isn't horror related. I've always loved the Ninja Turtles, and this could be a great reboot if done properly.

I like it

I'm optimistic. This could be so bad-ass. Since they want a new franchise they`re gonna want to make the best film they can to allow for future films. The fact that they don`t like the script now is promising becase they want better.

Platinum Dunes is NOT a crap studio, like so many here seem to think it is. They make great remakes of movies that weren't that great to begin with so their remakes seem ten times better, which is cool with me.

The Friday the 13th, the Texas Chainsaws, the Nightmare on Elm Street, those are all great remakes that made money.

I want the origin to be that of the animated series. Shredder/Oroku Saki and Splinter/Hamato Yoshi begin a rivalry in Japan, Shredder sets up Splinter, he bails to

I want the origin to be that of the animated series. Shredder/Oroku Saki and Splinter/Hamato Yoshi begin a rivalry in Japan, Shredder sets up Splinter, he bails to NYC, homeless, lives in the sewers.

In the meantime, Shredder has created and built the Foot Clan, which moves their operations into NYC.

All of that kept from cartoon. THEN, bring in TGRI from Secret of the Ooz. They lose a canister of a radioactive ooz down the sewers, it transforms Yoshi into Splinter, and it transforms 4 baby turtles who got dropped down a storm drain into the Turtles.

From there, you can go the Alien route with Dimension X/the Tehcnodrome/ and Krang, OR you can go the realistic route ala the first movie.

Honestly?? I think it would be an EPIC movie if they went with the aliens, Krang and the technodrome. I mean imagine that in LIVE ACTION? If they could get decent CGI and Fx it would be unlike anything ever seen on screen.

Buut, the low budget route would be great too, and that would be an awesome set up for two more which could then introduce elements from the animated series.

Whooo. Sorry that was so long. Just REALLY excited...

I call bullshit on this entire rant. TCM, NOES, and Friday the 13th are horror masterpieces and considered classics. Bullshit on this defense. Bullshit. I'm astounded anyone beyond an executive of theirs would vouch for the entirety of PD and use only financial figures to cite their credibility. Give me a damn break.

your defense of the remakes being great is that "they made money". Really bro.. really? Of course they're gonna make fucking money! The name itself could gross 30 million opening weekend even if it's running blank prints!

I don't wish to alarm you, but you may wish to consult your GP, because you appear to be exhibiting signs of hydrocephalus, a fluidic pressure in the skull more commonly referred to as "water on the brain".

You have SEEN the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, right? That's one of the most fucked up flicks ever made. I don't remember being disturbed by any of those crap remakes.

I'm about half and half on Platinum Dunes movies. The remake of Nightmare wasn't anywhere near the level of the original. The original Friday the 13th may have been good for its time but tell me it isn't dated as all hell? The remake wasn't that good but it entertained me although i thought the opening was ACE. I loved the TCM remake and I can't stand the original.

That all said, you people bashing the original poster are speaking your opinions just like he was, his.

Even if he would've

Even if he would've said things like the remakes had better atmosphere, scares, acting, cinematography and/or writing you'd still give him shit about it.

I've seen plenty of weak defenses for 'classics' too ... usually just 'THEY ARE CLASSICS! Not Cash-ins!'

Yeah if they went dark like the original they would be taking a step in the right direction. Raphael's dark humor would be ok but I agree no deli meat and yo yo's this time.

I just hope the new movie is more in the same tone as the original one and not the goofy sequels were they hit foot ninjas with deli meat and yo yo's. Also I never liked the whole Splinter was a pet rat that learned Karate in his cage so I hope they go with him being a mutated Hamato Yoshi.

The team who wrote Iron Man already has me somewhat convinced, but it would be so bad ass if they could go the "darker" route with this.
