New Thor: The Dark World images appear including a clearer look at Malekith and the Dark Elves

05.28.2013

The teaser for THOR: THE DARK WORLD impressed me and gave me hope that the sequel would make up for the shortcomings in the first film, namely leaving Earth out of the mix for the most part. With the enemy this time around being Malekith and the Dark Elves, I figured this would put the film squarely in the fantastic Nine Realms. Boy, do I look right.

GAME OF THRONES director Alan Taylor is bringing much more sword and sorcery to the sequel while the aesthetic still seems to be linked to the first film. The costumes still look ornate and foreign. It was hard to get a good visual of how the Dark Elves looked from the teaser, but now we have a couple of images that, despite being low res, give us a good look for the first time at Christopher Eccleston as Malekith as well as the armored Dark Elves under his command.

You can tell that is Eccleston under the make-up. He looks reminiscent of Lord Voldemort with the stretched skin and hairless features. The Dark Elves, for that matter, look like warrior Death Eaters. I hope the big ass guns they carry look good in action against Thor's hammer.

THOR: THE DARK WORLD stars Chris Hemsworth, Christopher Eccleston, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Rene Russo, Stellan Skarsgård, Idris Elba, Ray Stevenson, Jaimie Alexander, Tadanobu Asano, Kat Dennings, Zachary Levi, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. It opens on November 8th.

So where is the planet of pointy eared Michael Myers clones in the Marvel Universe located? I read a lot of comics back in the day and never read any with them in it. So much for "don't shoot till you see the whites of there eyes"....

hmmm....

I guess I'm alone in wishing it was Ulik instead of Ernie and his Keebler Elves as the films villain/s. Kurse or the Enchantress and the Executioner would have been great also, maybe in part 3....

I for one am down with those creepy looking masks! Don't really understand why so many are complaining about them. They look creepy with those big black round eyes. And don't forget that pictures often don't do the final product justice!
I remember some early pics of Thor's costume from the first movie where it looked like rubber. Same with the very first pics they released for the new Superman.

The director change

I hope the tone doesn't change too much like it did with "Iron Man 3".

"..and gave me hope that the sequel would make up for the shortcomings in the first film, namely leaving Earth out of the mix for the most part."
Thor certainly had its fair share of shortcomings, but having too little of the action take place on earth was definitely not one of them. I'm all for them setting the majority of this film off in the nine realms. I really am not a fan of the elves' look, though. The death eater comparison is pretty obvious, and they just remind me of the putties off

The death eater comparison is pretty obvious, and they just remind me of the putties off of Power Rangers / generic henchmen from half a dozen other 90's kids shows. Which I'm just going to guess is not the vibe they were aiming for.

Pictures looks great and the atmosphere and tone was really felt during the trailer. I'm assuming this sequel is going to have the most impact on Avengers 2 just like the first Thor had the most impact on the first Avengers.

Jabbawockeez

Not digging those masks. The eyes look too round and doll-like. Not intimidating at all.

Personally, I find round, lifeless, doll-like eyes creepier.

It's ok to admit that if these guys approached you in a dark empty parking lot or alley, you would shit yourself.

I agree with DH. Black eyes, expressionless mask - way creepier and intimidating than some "angry face" mask.

To be fair a rat in a dark alley would creep me out.

Doesn't have to be an angry face either, just something more menacing. The Dark Elves were not *creepy*, they were incredibly powerful super beings.
