New trailer and poster for Pitt and Malick's Tree of Life

12.15.2010

We've been hearing about Terrence Malick's TREE OF LIFE for what seems like ages now, but today we have our first real look at it in this debut trailer starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn.

You'll likely have trouble understand what the hell it's actually about from this spot, as its rich in vibrant imagery, but lacking in any real explanation of what it all means. Here's the official synopsis:

The film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). Jack (played as an adult by Sean Penn) finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith. Through Malick's signature imagery, we see how both brute nature and spiritual grace shape not only our lives as individuals and families, but all life.

Alright, that didn't exactly clear anything up either, but between the cast and all the space imagery, I'm intrigued. I heard the world might end too, so that could be exciting.

Check it out below (or watch in HD at Apple), and see the debut poster under that.

If the trailer could...

ignite such feelings then what will the movie do? IN my humble opinion, it seems a bit pretentious and may even be boring in places, but it seems that this movie is the documentation of the span on one man's life. we all have had pretentious and boring moments in our own life. If is overrun with existential bullshit then it will be shit, but if it manages to capture the relationship between a man and his father then it will be a masterpiece.

"Come on hit me"

So that's how Fight Club started...

The cinematography by Emmanuel Lubezki looks stunning. I find Malick's films to be somewhat bloated but there's also much to admire in his work. Can't wait for this one.

Beautiful poster

C'mon Tassi! WTF

first things first, the movie looks excellent and it's wonderful to see that all this time spent waiting seems to be worthwhile.

But jesus Tassi, can you think before you write for once? I understand it's YOUR article but do you really have to put crap like "I heard the world might end too, so that could be exciting" in your post? I don't know if what you're talking about is a rumor or what but I didn't know something like that might happen in the film and I would have rather seen a film

At least put some kind of warning before you say something like that, not everyone wants to know everything about a film before they go into the theater...

Yeah, I just saw this a couple of hours ago before Black Swan. Like goes_to_ricks, I was wondering what the hell it was until I saw Pitt and then I knew. Very confusing but looks intriguing. Great poster also.

BTW, wasn't there supposed to be a parallel movie also directed by Malick that was going to be about the "Birth of the Universe" or something? I remember hearing something about that. Is that still coming out?

Sorry..

..but this man is prob the most overrated/overhyped director ever. Every time the man decides to grace us w/ a film everyone treats it like it's should be called The Godfather2010Citizen Kane. I'll admit, the man knows how to make some beautifully filmed movies, but they're always way too philosophical and/or introspective so they end up being these pretty, stream of consciousness nonsensical pieces of hipster fodder. Hell, @ least The Matrix had some neat kung-fu scenes.

The films you are referring to are no doubt classic, timeless, and master works of art but when was the last time Hollywood put something that good out? Its a sad, sad day in Hollywood. Its "Golden Age" is over... At least for now. At least until one of us makes the next best thing...

The problem is anyone labeling something so subjective as the greatest ever as films such as Citizen Kane and the like are. Not to diminish the value of films like Citizen Kane, but how many who list that as they're favorite film? Maybe by some formulaic set guidelines can you label a film the greatest but that does translate into a film everyone will like and therefore is mute. I think off the trailer this movie looks absolutely engrossing and it has nothing to do with his previous movies as I

Sure I would easily agree this won't be a movie for everyone or even more to the point it will be a more divisive movie than most but as the great designer Tibor Kalman said - "make something no one hates, no one loves it"

3 people make intelligent arguments and comments, and then dead anchoress chimes in with a symbol complaint? gtfo...

btw, you all made great statements on ur opinions. I love Pitt and Penn, but dislike Mallick so I'm still up in the air. I'll see it for sure tho because anyone who trashes a film they haven't seen is a dumbass.

Yes, the answer to life or anything is most likely to be found in books written by ordinary men 1-2 thousands years ago. If something, these books, the old and the new testament, the Qur'an, written by people with their own motives, had their own reasons, and at a time when peoples all-round educational level was so low that almost anything would be believable (bushes in flames, speaking angels etc). Why should any rational individual today, with accumulated knowledge of mankind, believe in

I saw The King's Speech the other day, and this trailer started playing, and I had no idea what it was until Brad Pitt came on screen... and then once I started thinking what movies he had coming out next year, it just hit me and my eyes were glued.

This looks beautiful. I can't wait.

This film looks great. But, so did The New World and people were leaving the theater when I saw that. I thought it was way full of itself and was extremely boring (no that doesn't mean shit had to blow up). Just hope this one is better than The New World, that's all. I love Brad Pitt in anything though, so we'll see!

I may be the black sheep here, but without knowing more about this film, I can't say I am anymore interested. I'm not terribly familiar with Mallick's work, so I can judge based on that. And the trailer looked real pretty, but that's about all I got from it. Well done, but just not enough to go on.
