New trailer for Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma teases a human drama of epic scope

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Alfonso Cuaron has managed to wow us time and time again with movies like CHILDREN OF MEN and GRAVITY, and it looks like he’s done it again with his latest film, ROMA. The semi-autobiographical tale from Cuaron (which he also co-edited, and photographed) focuses on a family in Mexico in the 1970s and is already being hailed by critics coming out of the early festivals, and now we have a breathtaking, sweeping new trailer for you all to watch that makes it impossible not to think this movie will be a big awards player as the season starts to kick off.

The film stars newcomer Yalitza Aparicio as Cleo, a worker living in Mexico City in the 1970s and who works for a family with several children. She soon forms a bond with the mother, Sofia (Marina de Tavira), and the two stick by one another as they go through events that put them both to the test and change their lives forever.

Curaon’s latest is holding with a 99% “Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes, and our Chris Bumbray gave it a perfect 10/10 score in his review out of TIFF. Not only is the film Mexico’s Best Foreign Language entry (which it’s likely to win), but it’s already a heavy frontrunner in other categories, like cinematography and Best Director, and while last year’s MUDBOUND got some recognition, ROMA stands to get Netflix their most Oscar attention yet. Aparicio is also being talked about for Best Actress in her feature film debut, which makes this is a must-see performance in a must-see film.
