New trailer for Guillermo Del Toro's Pacific Rim is even more kick ass than the last!

Jan. 7, 2013by: Paul Shirey

I'm not going to lie; I was a bit letdown by the first trailer for Guillermo Del Toro's upcoming robots vs. monsters epic, PACIFIC RIM.  I know, that may sound like blasphemy to some of you, but there it is.  It looked good, no doubt, but still a little too REAL STEEL meets TRANSFORMERS for me.  Now, this new trailer, which is shorter, but with tons of new footage, is sliced just the way I like it and sells the shit out of the movie.  Sometimes a little editing makes all the difference.

The new trailer has a slew of new footage and comes courtesy of the CES Qualcomm presentation via Facebook, proving that there's always a venue to debut a kick ass trailer.

Rock 'em and Sock 'em:

Directed by Guillermo Del Toro, PACIFIC RIM, starring Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, Charlie Day, Rinko Kikuchi, and, Clifton Collins, Jr., unleashes its robotic fury on July 12, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: What do you think? Is this better, worse, or on par with the last trailer?

Looks the same as the last one. These really aren't doing anything to excite me. It's actually giving the cooler effect. I was excited til I saw the trailers.

but they have the guy who did the screenplay for clash of the titans, so i might have to be a little bit worried. by the way, these giant robots would stomp the shit out of the transfomers michael bay craps out every few years.

Cant wait to see this

This looks great! My most anticipated movie of the year. Everything from the concept to the monster/robot design just screams awesome to me. Hope it live up to my expectations and does well at the box office.

ps.. I hated Transformers, strongly disliked Battleship, and never saw or was interested in Real Steel. Comparing it to those movies and consequently writing it off as such is a rather shallow estimation IMO.

I think this movie looks great

I think some of the comments about how "they should just use nukes" are laughable.

These monsters are attacking major cities. Dropping a nuke on them would kill millions of people, not to mention the fall out & potential nuclear winter. Lets say for instance that terrorists took over a building full of thousands of people, do we blow up the entire building with everyone inside just to kill the terrorist?

I think the hate is just a reaction to upset those with unwavering conviction that it will be amazing mainly because of Del Toro. That said I can completely understand why people would be skeptical, and want to slap the spit out of a fanboys mouth if it weren't already attached to Del Toro's penis.

Yes it's monsters vs robots... but it's not a story that needs to be told. Del Toro can do better than this. And also the fact that the majority displays blind faith because it's him. And lt also looks, to me, like big budget power rangers... and hey if anyone likes that stuff, they can keep it.

Confused

I am a bit confused, I assume that the pilots are not in the robots, as that would be completely idiotic. But it appears that they are getting injured, again why would you have direct feedback to the pilots when you would not have to. Looks interesting for a popcorn movie but reminds me of Robot Jox which I loved so maybe a slicker new version of that can't be a bad thing. We shall see.

Oh and whats with the American Gladiator duo with the bleach blonde hair in the first still. You should

They are inside the robot. It just wouldn't be a mecha story if the pilots weren't inside. Plus Del Toro said that the robots are directly linked into the pilots brain. Perhaps wireless is out of the question when it comes to neural linkups.

awesome

Dear Fanboys, agan, calm down. If you just “nuked” ‘em, you wouldn’t have the robot vs. monster movie. I said movie, movie as in make-believe. If you want realism, then ditch the movie, new flash, enormous monsters also don’t come out of the ocean. So, no one is crying about that. Ugh, sit back, get some damn popcorn and enjoy.

But still, like I said on the other trailer, this movie is a huge step in the right direction on the path of better mecha properties like Neon Genesis Evangelion.

No punch can match an atomic bomb

Sorry, but they still haven't solved the key problem: A robot, no matter how massive, can not generate the power in a "punch" that an atomic bomb creates. You nuke monsters like this. GDT ought to explain in the trailer why they don't use nukes so the movie doesn't seem so illogical. And believe me...the "it's near people" line is bullshit. Keep in mind that giant pilot driven robots is its own genre (the mecha genre), it was spawned by Japanese comics, and these giant fighting humanoid robots are the equivalent of superheroes in Japanese culture. Like with superheroes, you just have to accept them for what they are. Superheroes don't make sense when you think about them, but we still accept the genre (more now than ever). The only difference here is that the 'mecha' genre has never really been done in America.

Pacific Rim is the equivalent of Richard Donner's Superman, it's a movie in a genre that hasn't really been done by Hollywood before. Like with Superman, you just have to go with it. Though unlike Superman, the Mecha genre has never really been a part of US culture.

@Bob Loblaw: You completely ignored Drexxell's question, and lied about the nature of giant mecha in Japanese popular culture. Most giant mecha in anime and manga have logical explanations for their presence and abilities. They're not just whimsical characters with illogical powers.
Likewise, most American superheroes have logical explanations for their presence and abilities. I honestly don't know where you're coming from with your comment.

Drexxell's complaint is about how these Pacific Rim robots are much more like Super Sentai robots, which are a cartoonishly ridiculous sub-genre of giant mecha that happens to be live-action.
Drexxell's complaint is valid; it is a complaint that is addressed by most anime and manga.

im glad you brought this up and i can see your perspective a little but if you want my answer, its this. even if the monster flattens all of san francisco before your mechs stop it, you can still rebuild san fran starting the next day (see Evangelion). if you nuke it, the 300 years of latent radiation will likely cause you to run out of real estate real fast. most anime explain it differently but from a practical sense, i think my answer holds up. feel free to disagree.

I think the people who wrote the script said shots of nuking monsters would get boring, fast. The brightest minds could probably concoct several ways to more effectively deal with this threat - but those would make for a boring movie. Based on the Deep Water Horizon catastrophe, BP oil could probably nip the whole problem in the bud before it began.

Sure, robots are not effective. You know what else is illogical? Monsters pouring out of a Lovecraftian portal. Do we ask why "The Expendables"

For a site that is so devoted to illogical genre films that are based in tossing any sense of realism out the window, I find this argument, and the snippy follow ups to it, to be laughable. I personally would much rather see this, than Hugh Jackman bonding with his son through the use of Rock-em Sock-em droids.

@smooveLuv - I think you miss drexxell's point too, and I agree with him. You can't really say "it's just a movie" to allow for an illogical story. If they said it was a parallel universe where nukes didn't exist - that would be logical. In Superhero movies they explain how they got their superpowers (however unscientific or hard to believe that may be) so there is basis of logic. Superman is an alien and has superpowers = logical suspension of disbelief. Superman flies around the Earth

It's a bit like if you point out the illogical endings or character motivations in the Batman films people say "it's a man dressed as a bat fighting crime - it's not meant to be realistic" (I've heard this several times). Man wears costume and fights crime with gadgets = logical suspension of disbelief.

The actual movie may give you the answers you're looking for. You cant expect them to explain everything in the trailer...

But here is a thought anyway: These monsters come from the sea. They rise out of the depths and start attacking cities. That city they're close to is still populated. Evacuating a city would take a lot of time and you cant just go nuking cities full of you're own citizens can you. Maybe they should evacuate all the coastal cities and towns to create a buffer zone so they can rain nukes down anytime a monster emerges from the sea? But what of international trade then? The vast majority of our Fuel let alone everything else we consume comes to our continent via ship. How long would our countries last without this stuff?

If it was just one monster then maybe a nuke would be the answer, but this MOVIE is about LEGIONS of monster pouring out of this hole in the deepest part of the ocean for DECADES!!

and its just that: A MOVIE!

Sorry but...

..does anyone else think del Toro's flicks are pretty boring? I'm not trying to be a troll and maybe I just don't get his sense of filmmaking, but to me his screenplay is what caused the few bad scenes in The Hobbit and although his work as director has been inspired and creative and not without effort, they all end up being pseudo-artsy and dry as f**k. In the words of Bilbo Baggins, "I don't mean to be rude but I had to speak my mind, I am sorry".

Sorry Del Toro, but you are no Michael Bay.

I hate it when films try to ape classics for a quick cash grab. Battleship aped Transformers, and now Pacific Rim is doing the same. Del Toro doesn't have an original bone in his body. He should go work for The Asylum.

Also, the "cancel the apocalypse" line is hilariously bad. Who writes shitty dialog like that?

Umm...everyone loves Transformers? Don't get me wrong, I liked it okay, but the script felt like three different movies all vying for screen-time. There's the coming-of-age story, the alien invasion plotline, and the MacGuffin. And then the villain shows up for about a minute.

Not to mention the mechs don't look like junkyard art projects. Not that there's anything WRONG with that.

For those, who are not impressed, I get it. It´s just a tease however and I guess it´s quite difficult to promote the movie without giving too much away. So we just got glimpses of one Moster vs. Robot Bash. Knowing Del Toro there´s much more to come and the creature design will be sick!

Dude... it's "Today we are CANCER in the Apocalypse!" No wonder why people are hating on your comment. You aren't even hearing the lines right!

yeah I've seen all those films, the only film I would consider great is Pan's Labyrinth. I also enjoy Hellboy 1 & 2 & even Mimic... the others not so much... and don't get me started with the films he produces or presents...

Cancer/ Cancel/ Canceling whatever it's a bad line that's getting biased respect because of who wrote it. It does inspire me to start using cancer in that way... like "I'm gonna cancer all you fanboys!" ... it's insipid.

Great trailer. Movie looks fantastic. It's one of my top three most anticipated of 2013 that does not involve superheroes.

"And today we are canceling the apocalypse" is easily the best line out of 2013 so far.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all about this. But that wasn't much better. I'm glad too. Don't want to see TOO much.
Also, really hoping every single action scene isn't at night . . .
