New trailer for YA adaptation Beautiful Creatures starring Emmy Rossum, Jeremy Irons, and Emma Thompson

Yesterday, you got your first look at THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES, a contender for the crown of TWILIGHT, and today we have a new trailer for BEAUTIFUL CREATURES, another young adult novel stepping into the ring to claim the title.  While the latest TWILIGHT film will no doubt rake in the cash this weekend, it’s a bittersweet victory as the series comes to a close and these new kids step up to the plate.  I will say this, between BEAUTIFUL CREATURES and THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS, the effects work looks far superior and even a little enticing.

Take a look:

The thing is, as much as the “chosen one” archetype can be effective, it gets so tiring in these YA adaptations.  They’re always reluctant kids who don’t know their power yet, with the older generation wrapped up in prophecising about them.  Then, as expected, they harness their power and realize their destiny, usually by holding out their open hand with a serious look on their face.  Seriously, take that model and just go write some variation of another archetype and you could be the next Stephanie Meyer.  In short, I’m bored.

Here’s a synopsis:

A supernatural love story set in the South, “Beautiful Creatures” tells the tale of two star-crossed lovers: Ethan (Alden Ehrenreich), a young man longing to escape his small town, and Lena (Alice Englert), a mysterious new girl. Together, they uncover dark secrets about their respective families, their history and their town. Oscar(R) nominee Richard LaGravenese (“The Fisher King,””P.S. I Love You”) directs from his adaptation of the first novel in the best-selling series by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. The film stars Alden Ehrenreich (“Tetro”), newcomer Alice Englert, Academy Award(R) winner Jeremy Irons (“Reversal of Fortune”) Oscar(R) nominee Viola Davis (“The Help,” “Doubt”), Emmy Rossum (TV’s “Shameless”) and Academy Award(R) winner Emma Thompson (“Howard’s End,” “Sense and Sensibility”).

BEAUTIFUL CREATURES, directed by Richard LaGravenese and starring newcomer Alice Englert, Viola Davis, Jeremy Irons, Emma Thompson, Emmy Rossum, and Thomas Mann will go for the gold on February 13, 2013.  Guess you’ll be seeing A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD at a later date if you’re dating someone in this demographic…
