New Up clip!

12.16.2008

After following up RATATOUILLE with WALL-E, is it possible that Pixar could again release a movie that somehow surpasses their previous effort? I'm not sure how you can get much better than WALL-E but Harry Knowles and crew showed 45 minutes of UP at their Butt-Numb-A-Thon in Texas and the reports have been wildly positive (I've heard more than one person say that the footage made them cry). But for the rest of us, we don't know much about the film. Now we get a clip from the film that gives us a longer take on the bit in the trailer with the Boy Scout stuck on the front porch. Sadly UP doesn't open until May (but when it does it will be Pixar's first 3-D movie). Check out the clip below.

Brokendreamer

That is without a doubt one of the most literate posts I've ever read on this site. If only everybody would try to keep themselves as collected and open minded as you have, then JoBlo and similar themed sited would be that much better off.

DISAGREED (though kinda agreed actually)

Still, all the sophisticated and intellectual and artistic aspects of films are there as ways and means for film makers to communicate effectively with an audience. If you're bored, you aren't really being communicated to. Film geeks like us might not like it when people insult a film just because it "bored" them, but isn't that a fine laymen way of saying that it failed to do its job?
If you hated Lord of the Rings because it was overlong, that's the movie's problem, not yours. Because maybe

Failing to engage anybody is a mess up. 'Course, if you fail to engage Racist Joe Bob with your educated study of black history, who gives the @#(!$.

...and UP looks terrific. This studio is a madhouse of consistently getting good ideas and great executions.

Agreed

It's becoming a rarity for me to come across well written and thoughtful posts in these parts. More over, it's rarer for me to be in complete agreement. BrokenDreamer, I couldn't have said it better myself. It's all too often we loose sight of things. Within the tussle of "I'm right and you're wrong," we loose objective. A simple fact that each of us might have a different interpretation of the same thing.

That said. This doesn't excuse us from a few absolutes. There is little rescue

That said. This doesn't excuse us from a few absolutes. There is little rescue for bad acting, horrible directing, confusing edits e.t.c. From a personal stand point, I do believe that there are certain standards of excellence which we should all expect from our films, no matter the genre. In this specifically, I couldn't be more in agreement.

As for Wall-E, I enjoyed the film so much that I bought it for my iPod, I end up watching a few clips here and there whenever I find myself idling. What struck me most about Wall-E, was how adept it's creators were in transferring the human essentials to things we all know to be not human at all.

On Pixar's next adventure... I've enjoyed, at various different levels, most of their work, so it stands to reason I'm looking forward to UP as well. Anyways, I could end up writing a whole lot more but this isn't the place. Suffice to say, it was nice reading up on your points Mr. BrokenDreamer.

Personal Preferences

Disliking a movie does not make that movie bad. You can dislike a well made movie and not be wrong, but to call a movie horrible doesn't make it so. You don't like the silent film aspect and find it boring at times. So? Does that mean that the lack of dialogue and focus on action instead of words is a bad filmmaking choice? Of course not. It just means you don't like it. I personally didn't enjoy Lord Of The Rings (I thought it was too long for my taste and also don't care much for the

You don't like the silent film aspect and find it boring at times. So? Does that mean that the lack of dialogue and focus on action instead of words is a bad filmmaking choice? Of course not. It just means you don't like it. I personally didn't enjoy Lord Of The Rings (I thought it was too long for my taste and also don't care much for the fantasy genre). However, I wouldn't argue that the movie is horrible; just that my opinion is different. I also dislike the movie 2001 (referenced in Wall-E), though I enjoyed the part with HAL. I thought the ending was art for art sake and too smart for its own good. Does this mean that the ending has no artistic merit and Stanley Kubrick is overrated as a director? No, because it is still good filmmaking, even if it is not the type of direction I prefer. But that's the point. Too many times I have to read someone commenting on a well reviewed film and popular release with a counter statement emphasizing how horrible the movie is. It is like they are rebelling and need to make their thoughts known, but I would bet that the number of people that dislike a movie is not far off from the many who enjoyed it. It is all opinion and preferences.

However, I think horrible filmmaking has absolutes and hallmarks that can be identified. There is no mistaking bad acting, corny dialogue, overuse of cliches and lack of originality, bad directing, bad editing, etc. Therefore, there is such thing as good and bad films. But when a movie has a well developed story with a thoughtful narrative, a clear direction and vision, and generally adheres to the criteria of a well-made film, disliking it does not make it bad. Therefore, just because you think Wall-E is boring, it does not make the film any worse, and it certainly does not discredit it. This is actually a reaction I have had to most of the comments like daydreamers. I enjoyed it, and I appreciated the fact that PIXAR took animation further and incorporated the risks of less dialogue and more visual storytelling. I don't care if you hate it; I just don't need to hear how horrible a movie is because you don't like it and how it is "overrated" (as many say about well-received films) and not deserving of high acclaim. It is just opinion.

Giving my opinion on this clip, I will state that I am excited about this movie and once again eager to see what PIXAR creates next (and, yes, I liked Cars; just because the public perception of a movie is poor doesn't mean it can't be appreciated; the opposite can also be true).
