New York City closing down the famous Ghostbusters firehouse?

May. 19, 2011by:

It's the most famous firehouse in the world, but pretty soon it's just going to be another vacant building in New York. The mayor's office is planning to close down 20 fire companies as part of sweeping budget cuts and chief among them is Hook & Ladder Co. 8, the Tribeca location used as the Ghostbusters' headquarters. But aside from being a popular movie exterior, it was also a working firehouse and home to some of NYC's bravest (they were one of the first to show up at the World Trade Center on September 11th).

This has many people upset and not just fans of GHOSTBUSTERS (though I'm sure Dan Aykroyd will eventually have something to say about it). The city is halfway through completion on the Freedom Tower, the new complex designed to revitalize the World Trade Center area. Just this weekend it was announced that Conde Nast would be moving their operations to the building once it was opened. That Mayor Bloomberg would want to cut budgets by closing down firehouses in a vulnerable part of the city has many residents pissed.

But all is not lost (yet). City Council members are vowing to save as many of the firehouses as possible and due in no small part to its location and history, Ladder Co. 8 will be at the top of the list. Even if it eventually is closed as a functioning fire company, I still don't see how you could lease the space for apartments or business. It's got its own toy for Christ's sake!

oh man...

as a NYC resident and FDNY applicant i am first and foremost pissed at the legitimate reasons for these budget cuts to follow through.

.... however, growing up i've had some fond memories of visiting this house. i was a huge ghostbusters fan, and one day my dad took me to H&L 8 and there sitting in the lobby was the friggin Echo 1. i went nuts. i think i was like 8. good times.

Sad to see it close. guess GB3 will be shot somewhere on the upper west side.... fail.

I bet the mayor said:

"I think this building should be condemned. There is serious metal fatigue in all the load bearing members, the wiring is substandard, it is completely inadequate for our power needs, and the neighborhood is like a demilitarized zone."

HE IS VIGO!

The firehouse is like the buzzing of flies to him! In all seriousness, this is very sad. I've always wanted to make a trip to New York and make a "Ghostbusters" trip if you will and visit all the locations. I guess the results of this may determine how soon I go.

While on one hand this could be pretty bad, this also is a grand opportunity to turn that building into a ghostbusters museum. Im certain that would be a nice new attraction for new york. A ghostbusters museum. As for closing down the firestations, its no surprise the mayor would do that since the developers probably already paid off his election and now its time to collect on the debt.

I actually could get behind that, sort of what they did with the original house in "A Christmas Story"

This sucks. Please don't close the firehouse. It's part of New York. Where's Stay Puft when you need him? Venkman would have said "Nobody demolish a firehouse in my town".

I'm against this but

Does anyone see the irony that the Ghostbusters could not have bought the building in the first movie had the firehouse not been closed down in the movie world?
