Next week on a very special Star Wars...

04.06.2010by:

As if THE CLONE WARS wasn't embarrassing enough, Lucasfilm is prepping an animated sitcom that would take place in the STAR WARS universe. Take all the time you need to reread that last sentence. Lest you think this might not mean what you think it means, director Todd Grimes said of the project, "The Star Wars universe is so dense and rich; itís crazy to think that there arenít normal, mundane everyday problems in a world so well-defined. And itís even crazier to think of what those problems might be, since itís all set in a galaxy far, far away."

Maybe they could have Sio Bibble get into a car accident with Bib Fortuna and because he doesn't have car insurance the intergalactic judge sentences him to be his butler. I mean that's the only way this could work, right? If they go completely over-the-top with sitcom cliches and have a completely cheesy opening theme song (like this)?

But that's probably not gonna happen. Seth Green and Matthew Seinrich, creators of "Robot Chicken," will have "creative involvement" but it's unclear how big or little that involvement will be. So what do you think? Is this idea OK with you or is it just another Lucas money move?

Extra Tidbit: If Sio Bibble is actually the lead character in this sitcom, I'll take back every bad thing I've said about it.

The Clone Wars TV show is great!

It is with out a doubt the best animated show out right now. This TV show alone was worth the lame prequels, and nearly redeems Lucas.

I could care less about a sitcom, but it's the live action series I'm looking forward to. If Lucas can produce a live action series as good as The Clone Wars, then he will be back in my good graces.

It used to be that Star Wars was a brilliant epic saga that had a little bit of unfortunate kiddy stuff attached.

Now it's a kiddy saga, that for some reason has some traces of awesome stuff in it.

Congrats, fucknuts.

SW Sitcom = Very Bad Idea

Sure, Robot Chicken's take on SW is hilarious but I don't believe it can be sustained.

On another note, with all the energy being poured into SW spinoffs, why can't Lucas just hire Timothy Zahn to screenplay the Thrawn Trilogy and make chapters 7,8 & 9. C'mon George. Let it happen. Everyone will forgive you if you continue SW with honor and integrity. Thank you.

The Clone Wars is a great TV Show.

It's not embarassing at all.

I thought this was an April Fool's joke.

ONE MORE THING: Boba Fett may be a main character on the Live-Action Series. The OT Boba.

The Clone Wars is AWESOME

Yeah the movie sucked but that was just george trying to make more money. But seriously the clone wars is better than the star wars prequels if you have been watching the latest season. Check it: [link]

*ahem*

#1 Clone Wars embarrassing? Harldy. easily one of the better animated series in recent memory.

#2 The robot chicken Star Wars episodes were pretty funny, so who's to say this won't be as well?

lastly, too much vitriol towards Star Wars makes you sound like Devin Faraci, and NO ONE wants that.

This is obviously....

a horrible idea, and 'The Clone Wars' is getting monotonous. It's been how long and they still haven't bridged the gap between ep 2 and 3? That aside, we know how shitty it turns out, Duku dies Ani kills everyone and becomes Darth Vader etc. So why not go past ep 6 and show how Luke re-builds the Jedi order. That would make more sense i think.

"Clone Wars" embarrassing?

Hardly. "CLONE WARS" is getting better and better and darker and darker every week. But I'm not down for an animated comedy. "STAR WARS" is modern day mythology. Stick with tragedy, war, and drama, no comedy in my "STAR WARS" unless it's the Abbott and Costello-stylings of C3PO and R2D2.

In Defense of Clone Wars

The movie should never have been released, but the TV show has actually become pretty good, and at times excellent. Better than the prequels to say the least.

If it's on Fox or ABC, it will be cancelled after 5 episodes. In this case, it would be a good thing, since this is going to suck much ass.

If they MUST do a live action TV Series then why not focus on the Bounty Hunters. They have some great stories in the books and could have some great action.
However in actuality it will probably be Darth Vader in counseling about how much he misses his Mommy. "My hand just slipped, I didn't mean to choke Padme, etc".

A live action sitcom would be something interesting... but an animated one???

For a life action sitcom just think ALF, but replace ALF with a Wookie. You could call it "That's My Wookie!" That would either be comedy gold or comedy shit... not sure which.

If this wasn't officially licensed, if someone else like the Robot Chicken creators said, "hey, we're going to do this TV show and we were given permission to use the characters, etc." people would probably be more excited. Instead eyes are rolling and people are expecting another "Holiday Special"-caliber disaster. Come on.

Color me surprised

I must say I very rarely feel absolutely dumbfounded by whatever is happening in franchises. And when it comes to Star Wars, I pretty much expect anything could happen.

Apparently my imagination isn't this broad.

Bringing in the creative team behind "Robot Chicken" is a plus. They've already created umpteen Star Wars themed sketches that are really funny.

But if any of the lead characters are Jedi that would be the first mistake, because those guys are never very funny.

The only reason I'm cool with the idea, it's because of Green and Seinrich's involvement in the project. Considering how awesome the Robot Chicken Star Wars specials are, this could turn out to be hilarious...

Or a complete bust, I don't know :P

Oh come on!! No one watches Stars Wars thinking about what characters went through puberty, or school, or how they dealt with their first crush!!

They want action and intrigue and adventure and good and evil!

Fucking ridiculous! GAAH!!

Between the prequels, the animated series, the clone-wars movie, the never-ending milking of the clone wars like we give a fuck about them, and now this... I can't support Lucas' direction of Star Wars anymore. I'm not sure if he's trying to destroy Star Wars now or just make himself look like a fool. Maybe both?

this is just another thing I can add to my list of aspects of the Star Wars universe I do not acknowledge, like the Holiday Special and the Ewok movies. And am I the only one still surprised Clone Wars is still on tv?

First of all, I'm also going to assume that this is some kind of April fools joke. However, if not, then the one way that I could actually see this being good is if it was something like Tag and Bink and with Seth and Matt on the job that just might be possible.

Someone's undergoing some serious post-Avatar trauma. Lucas, dude, enough is enough. A Star Wars sitcom?! This sounds effin' insane! This must hurt so much for Star Wars fans. Then again...which previous installment in the new trilogy hasn't hurt them as much already?

I say since you're gonna' do it...get the cast from Friends to play alien parts. It'll be Friends : In Space. How much shittier can you get, really?

I misread your opening comment. Because of the Clone High reference in the title, when you said "As if Clone Wars wasn't embarrassing enough", well, you can imagine what I assumed.
BUT
This is still a stupid idea.

Hmm...

Maybe it'll be about a group of friends that are in the Jedi Academy...but it will play out like Saved By the Bell...or they could do one based on Darth Maul in his teens...and it could be played out like Growing Pains...no matter what happens, it will be watched by tons of people and will make tons of money, so you might as well get over being mad about this now, cause there's nothing you can do about it.

too bad

Grimes is right that the Star Wars universe is dense and rich. Too bad this is what they decide to do with that depth and richness. While the audience who loved the prequels will probably like this, because they like the cheesy lame Jar-Jar shit...this decision is short sided. There is a lot of good dramatic Sci fi out there these days (Battlestar, District 9) and some top-notch action/adventure sci fi (Iron Man, Star Trek, Avatar). Star Wars would be completely embraced if they got some

That sounds like it would be a funny skit or YouTube video, but not a series.

Give Lucas A Break

Come on, lets give Lucas a break. He can do whatever he wants with his movies and universe. I for one love TCW series as well as ALL of the movies. Are there some parts of the Star Wars universes that I could do without? Sure. I don't feel like I lost part of my childhood because changes were made to the OT or that Jar Jar Binks was created. At the end of the day I still love Star Wars for what it is, a lot of fun.
