Nicolas Cage and Nicole Kidman versus burglars in the trailer for Trespass

08.17.2011

I can't decide what stands out more about TRESPASS -- the sense of familiarity that compels me to watch HOSTAGE again instead, the reunion of star Nic Cage with director Joel Schumacher (8MM) and Millennium Films (who bankrolled Cage's WICKER MAN, BAD LIEUTENANT and DRIVE ANGRY), or the fact that Cage changed characters (from victim to villain) after joining the project, then disappeared just before shooting only to return to the original role. Oh, that nutty Nic.

Anyway, the movie (unrelated to Walter Hill's 1992 flick) hits theaters on October 14, but if you're all escared after watching the trailer and just don't want to leave the safety of your home, it's also available on VOD the same day (and hits DVD just weeks later). The synopsis: "In a private, wealthy community, priority is placed on security and no exception is made for the Miller family’s estate. Behind their pristine walls and manicured gardens, Kyle (Nicolas Cage), a fast-talking businessman, has entrusted the mansion’s renovation to his stunning wife, Sarah (Nicole Kidman).

But between making those big decisions and keeping tabs on their defiant teenage daughter (Liana Liberato), Sarah often finds herself distracted by a young, handsome worker (Cam Gigandet) at their home. Nothing is what it seems, and it will take a group of cold-blooded criminals led by Elias (Ben Mendelsohn), who have been planning a vicious home invasion for months, to bring the Miller family together. When they storm the manor, everyone is tangled up in betrayal, deception, temptation and scheming. Kyle, Sarah and Avery will take the ultimate risk to make it out with their lives – and their family – intact."

Joel Shitmaker

As do all classy geeks, I love me some wild-eyed unhinged Nicolas Cage. And I don't even come down hard on folks for slumming it from time to time.

But damn do I loathe Joel Schumacher. No sense of narrative rhythm, no sense of character development, lazy reliance on hacky 'cool' visual styles. Just bad, bad, bad.

Hmmm...

I could be wrong, but it looks like Ben Mendelsohn might be modeling his character after Cage, like after Cage went back to playing the hero they couldn't shake the idea. Maybe it's just me.

It's looks OK but too much like HOSTAGE (great movie). It will probably play in theaters around the world, the problem is USA public, that only pay for TRANSFORMERS and Tyler Perry's movies! lol (i`m bad!)

I don't what's up everyone ass but I think this looks a fun little flick.
Plus I love how even though Nicolas Cage is playing the good guy he still looks crazier than any of the bad guys.

This looks stupid. I mean, who is this type of movie made for? It's obvious Cage is some sort of shady uber rich prick, so why should 90% of America identify or care about his character or his family and this point is made the ever more prevalent when in the trailer he seemingly chooses wealth or diamonds or secrets(?) over opening the safe and perhaps ending the situation. I'll pass.

it just looks like shit..

from the movie to the neon font to the voice-over phoning it in. The name of the movie was said so fast at the end, its like the guy had to just get the hell out of there.

TIDBIT: it's not straight to video

it's some new age concept that caters to americans saying 'hey, we know you're lazy, so here - be lazier, now you don't even have to go to the theatre to see a new movie!' it just seems to be one of the first big films trying that.
Regardless, the concept of the VOD thing is retarded, the only reason you would think they would do it is if it made sense from a business perspective -- but it doesn't unless they charge you $20-30 to play it on VOD (seeing as you don't know how many people are

I just hope the 'trend' never really takes off, new movies should be in theatres and they should hit VOD when they hit the rental store/blu-ray purchase, no sooner - no later. That's just my 2 cents though.
