Nicolas Winding Refn says he plans on shooting a sequel to Valhalla Rising with Mads Mikkelsen

Jun. 21, 2013by: Paul Shirey

VALHALLA RISING is not for everyone. Hell, Nicolas Winding Refn isn't for everyone. That said, if you are a fan of either (or both), then this news may speak to you. Refn, speaking to Indiewire, indicated that he had spoken to VALHALLA RISING's star Mads Mikkelsen about the film, saying it was:

"about revisiting the [One-Eye] character from ‘Valhalla Rising’ again to kind of complete… because there’s a similarity between ‘Valhalla Rising,’ ‘Drive’ and ‘Only God Forgives.’ But in a way I had this idea of Mads Mikklesen to go back to the origins of this character. But make the movie in Tokyo.”

When asked how that would be possible as a sequel, Refn cryptically said, “Tokyo is a world onto itself.” Refn seemed to be keeping details close to the chest, but when pressed further, said that the film would be “About the future…”

I could see a lot of possibility in this, strangely, as Refn's style could easily translate a hybrid, futuristic sequel to VALHALLA RISING. He's got just the right amount of odd flair to pull that off. Given the fate of Mikkelsen's "One Eye" in the original film it will be very ambiguous to see how Refn makes another go, especially in the future.

Refn is set to begin work on the Barbarella TV series, and it's unclear whether he plans on tackling the VALHALLA RISING sequel or his long-planned "sex film" I WALK WITH THE DEAD with Carey Mulligan.

Refn's ONLY GOD FORGIVES, starring Ryan Gosling, is set to open on July 19, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: What project would you like to see Refn jump into after Only God Forgives?

hmmmm

I loved Valhalla Rising, haven't seen any of this guys other movies, but I everyone I talk to except people on this site tell Drive sucked to no end. Also I'm not sure taking what seemed to be an era film set in reality into the future with the same character makes any kind of sense, but I'm sure I will check it out. BTW one of my favorite things about Valhalla Rising was the soundtrack.

Sweet!

Anything Refn does is worth checking out, even if you don't absolutely love what he is doing at least it is original and comes from an artistic place. He is in that small group of younger directors like Rian Johnson, Duncan Jones, Joe Cornish, Edgar Wright and Neill Blomkamp(to name a couple) that are on the cutting edge of modern cinema. I just got the first film in The Pusher trilogy today and I can't wait to check it out!

P.S. It may be a tough sell to the studio but I think a

P.S. It may be a tough sell to the studio but I think a Daredevil movie directed by Refn would be pretty amazing. Especially if they gave him scripting duties and allowed for a HARD-R rating (but this is a pipe dream)! Carnahan is still the best choice but Refn is a really intriguing thought.

So, maybe One Eye is some sort of time traveler? Not how I saw things going, but then there is so much in that movie left unsaid that Refn could literally do anything. And I enjoyed Valhalla Rising quite a bit.

Sounds like it's going to be a prequel.

Refn said it's about the future. Maybe he means how One Eye got captured by the vikings and this movie is about One Eye's future.

YES!

One of my favorites from Refn, my one complaint is the film abruptly ends (rumors are because they ran out of cash), would love to see more f Mikkelson as one eye.
TIDBIT: this one!

Loved Valhalla Rising, though not perfect, it's a very solid and unique film. A sequel sounds all the more interesting if you know about the alternative ending that he had in mind for the first one.

I gotta get myself down to Tokyo someday. It seems to inspire a lot of filmmakers to make some great pictures down there; Enter the Void and Lost in Translation being prime examples.
