Ninja Turtles live!

04.22.2009by:

If I correctly recall their evolution, the TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES crawled from the toxic ooze to a comic book, videogames, action figures, live-action feature, cartoon series, CG-animation, and now... back to live-action.

As rumored a few times over the years, the pets turned martial artists will once again exist in the flesh (or at least latex or CGI). The project will offer a rebooted origin story of color-coded half-shell heroes Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael (and probably Splinter).

No creative talent is involved yet, but Legendary Pictures chief Scott Mednick also exec produced WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE, which might give some indication as to how the new TMNT movie (planned for 2011) will ultimately blend its elements. Mednick says the movie will utilize "face replacement technology, which would allow the turtles to be much more expressive."

But the important question is: will any of them be voiced by Corey Feldman?

Extra Tidbit: The Turtles are celebrating their 25th anniversary this year.

awesome

Like many here, I was obsessed with the Ninjas as a kid, especially the live action movies. This is so cool, but I hope they keep the same overall cool, not take itself too seriously vibe from the originals.

I actually really liked the full CG Turtles movie especially that fight scene in the rain with Raf and Don, it was truely amazing. As for live action movie, yeah for sure but part of me would have loved to see another CG one.

I've been waiting for this news for a long time. Yeah the CGI movie had its moments, but a live action movie would be so much cooler, like the first 2 movies.

Naturally, it depends on your criteria. I feel like a lot of people base their judgement of the films on the the old cartoon, which was not at all what the turtles were meant to be. The comic started it all, and was a much grittier, quirkier piece of work than the kids cartoon it spawned. Unfortunately, people remember the cartoon and then compare it to the film and say, "Well, it's goofy like the cartoon and darker, too," when in fact it wasn't supposed to be quite THAT goofy and was only dark

The new film wasn't perfect, by any means, and the villains were lackluster, but it was still closer to the source material than anything so far (excepting some very good episodes of the animated series that began in 2003).

TMNT the live action movie is one of my all time favorites. I welcome a new live action film as long as it's not like TMNT3.

as for sequels....Did you absolutely loathe AVP:Requiem? Me too. There is a petition to get FOX and co. to make another AVP. I've started one to get them not to make it. Here's the link

Rasagathi

I don't know if the TMNT CGI movie was the best one to date. It doesn't really beat the original nor is it a bad movie per say. I do think the animation is average at best however, and the villain was so boring. I mean, there is support for the TMNT 2007 film, but the fanbase is a small but dedicated crowd.

@rasagathi

though i wouldn't say it was the BEST to date (TMNT II: Secret of the Ooze FTW!!!), the last TMNT deserves ALOT more credit that it received.

Donotello working as a tech support guy... GENIUS!

Cool

I remember years back that John Woo showed interest in the franchise. I doubt he'll be on board now.

I don't understand why the recent computer animated film was not more popular. It was the best TMNT to date. It had action, it was grim at times, and it balanced that well with humor without getting too annoying or inane (like the old cartoon and the original live-action films). Sequel it, don't reboot.

the First movie is CLASSIC

I hope they do it justice.

the first turtles flick captured the comic and the cartoon perfectly.

the cgi flick was cute but a miss. they turned donie into a pussy nerd, and mikey into a retarded moron.

they should bring Steve Barron the original movies director Back!

It's hard not to love the Turtles.

I'm sad that we won't get a direct sequel to TMNT. I thought that was amazing. Thought I'm glad the live action won't be a sequel to TMNT.

I can only hope that they build something strong enough and good enough to continue the franchise.

Fuckin' Awesome. I loved the original and the sequel. (3 was bad)

The fact that this is getting produced by Legendary Pictures, who are at this point, likely the best production company out there (They did 300, TDK, Watchmen, Observe & Report and WTWTA)...

...You have a dude who's producing WTWTA is all good. The "face replacement tech" is the same tech used for the face of the Wild Things in the movie. The costumes were all real (by the Jim Henson Co.) but the faces were open so they

COWABUNGA!

Heroes get remembered, but legends never die. Remember that, kid.

I too am a lifelong TMNT fanatic. Leo was my favorite turtle at first; then I segued into Donatello, and I've stuck there ever since. I'm 22 now, and I have loved the turtles for 18 of those years. Seeing the first two live-action movies was inspiring, and I am FUCKING REVVED to see them jump back into it!

I got it! Frere Jaque! Fre-re! Ja-que! Fre-re! Ja-que!

Donnie! Give it up!

D'oh...

Amazing News

Having enjoyed all four TMNT films (yes even the third one) and being a lifelong fan of the franchise I have one word: Awesome. I have a lot of faith in Legendary Pictures, this is gonna be something to look forward to. This just further cements the fact that the TMNT will never die.
