Nintendo debuts its next console, the WiiU

Jun. 7, 2011by: Paul Tassi

After one of the most confusing press conferences I've seen in my entire life, the dust has settled and it's become clear exactly what we just witnessed at E3.

Nintendo has debuted their next generation console, but during the conference, decided to only feature the new controller for the system, which perplexed everyone as to if the controller WAS the new console.

But no, as seen above, it's a controller and a box, same as usual. It's fully backwards compatible and can even employ the Wiimote for some features. The graphics have been upgraded, and from the demos look just shy of what the PS3 and 360 are capable of.

The real story, as Nintendo wanted to hammer home, is the controller, which augments games using a six inch touchscreen that can bring up menus, show player specific views or alternate camera angles. it can also transfer a full console game to its handheld screen if the TV is taken over by a family member. The tech looks like it could have some cool applications, but it's hard to know with so few details released.

We don't know the hardware specs of the console itself, nor how much it will cost, or even any titles for it, save one, a promised Smash Bros. installment. All other games featured (including some Zelda footage) were said to be tech demos, and not actual titles, although someday in theory they could be. Also this will NOT be out by the holiday, and won't be seen until at least after March 31st, 2012.

So, what are your thoughts on the WiiU?

Extra Tidbit: I think they would have been better off ditching the Wii name, showing the box and the controller immediately together, and then just going from there. Far easier that way.

Ummm

1) Why is this on the front page...this is more Digital Dorm news than movie news.

2) Yeah, smart idea Paul, get rid of the Wii name...cause you know, that has been nothing but a failure for Nintendo and hasn't brought them millions of money...wait...it has.

uh FuzzyJedi, regardless of it it was called the Famicom or not in Japan the point is the only difference between it and the next system was the word Super which is exactly what i pointed out before but instead just used the abreviations for the systems NA names. But you know thanks for pointing out the obvious ;)

hey vesaker, the Nintendo wasnt called that outside of the US. It was called Famicom (Family Computer).

The SNES was called Super Famicom offically, but everyone who had one called it the Super Nintendo, even in Japan.

Hey, Moron among Ants....Paul was just saying the name sucks. Great consoles can have crappy names, but still sell very well. The name has NOTHING to do with the console selling well or not. So therefore the point you made was...it was...stupid.

Sry to say but your #2 point FuzzyJedi is incorrect in the last bit. The NES was followed by the SNES which is just as little of a name change as Wii to the WiiU. Still a lame name though.

1) This is major entertainment news. This is a site that, while mostly a movie news site, does cover all of the entertainment.

2)The Wii made money from casual gamers. The name itself carries a stigma with the hardcore gaming crowd. Also, nintendo has changed the name of every sytem they have ever released, until this point. Why mess with a good system.

Another Lame Name

I was completely let down by the befuddling Nintendo presentation. All it is is an extra large controller that can stream games when you need to give up the TV you're playing on for someone else to watch sports. And that name; why does Nintendo continually choose lame names? I've already labeled this the Pee-Yew because, so far, it stinks. I really hope they can step up and win me over cause I haven had a Nintendo gaming console since the NES.

hmmm

so far the only selling feature for me is the transfering of games to the hand held to be played on the go. Or at least i'm assuming it's on the go, it would suck if you needed to be in the proximity of the consol for it to work.
The other thing i was wondering is if while playing on the consol the touch screen on the conrtoller fulfills specific functions how can it still do taht when you transfer the game to the conroler and are using that same screen as the regular game screen?

Will be

Will be interesting to see how this all works out. And while i can't recall but if this thing can't do blu-ray then it is fail.

WiiU is the sound the main girl makes in Kung Pow: Enter the Fist. "wiiu, wiiu, wiiu." lol sorry, I just saw that flick for the first time and was the first thing I thought of when reading article title.

A screen in the controllers? Well that's one way to jack up the pricetag.

It sounds pretty bad ass from what I've read here and in other places. 3D capable as well. We'll have to wait and see, but it sounds like Nintendo beat everyone to the punch again.

I think the controller looks big due to that screen on the controller. Looks nice though.

i thought it was pretty good, kinda reminds me of the old GameGear i think the possibilities of what it could do are endless if implemented correct. And from the looks of it you can still use a regular Wii controller. Cant wait to see waht Devs do with it. Just the idea of not having your plays on TV when playin Football is a win for me

Give the Sega Dreamcast some credit for thinking of the controller with a screen idea back in the 90s. This is obviously way more high tech, but the VMU could be used to call plays on your controller in NFL2K, and taken on the go to play mini games. I'm surprised it took this long for an advanced version. The name sucks though, I was hoping for Super Nintendo 2 or something. I'm surprised the graphics aren't above 360/PS3 though, I know graphics aren't a selling point anymore, but still. Maybe

I think based on some comments here everyone is going by this article alone and hasn't actually SEEN the intro video or read about it on A VIDEO GAME SITE, not a movie site.

The controller is NOT heavy or bulky at all, according to reports. It's actually really comfortable and feels like a regular controller and is extremely light considering all the tech in it.

Also, the graphics are no where NEAR "just shy" of the PS3. They are definitely better, as the specs have been released (just

Also, the graphics are no where NEAR "just shy" of the PS3. They are definitely better, as the specs have been released (just google them) and the machine itself is more powerful than anything in the current gen.

Go look up the intro video and all the amazing stuff this thing can do. It's not a gimmick like the Wii was, it actually DOES push the industry forward.

It doesn't matter how "good" the grapgics are, Pong in HD is stil Pong. The Games for WII are problably the worst out of all the systems.

Also the first WII controller sucks big time, so I have little to no faith in this one. Its still a gimmack. Lets just make Super Mario World 15 and no one will notice how crappy all the other games are...

I don't care for the Wii - as it gave birth to a hellspawn of shovelware. At the same time, I don't think it was a gimmick. The wand was the first generation of motion technology (old school attempts notwithstanding). If it didn't catapault the Wii to relative success, we might not see the industry moving to improve to role of motion detection.

I'm not a huge nintendo fan since my last SNES died, but I give them their credit where its due. And yeah - seems like people tuned out about 2

Tech is fine and all, but it is NOT the selling point of a console. Games are. I didn't buy a PS3 to hold Sony's 'nifty' controller or mess around with an eyetoy. I bought it to play great games like God of War, Killzone 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Uncharted 2 (just to name a few). Unless Nintendo starts adding new series to their library, and ones that appeal to the same audience of people that enjoy games on the 360 like Halo and games on the PS3 like the ones mentioned above, then the only

Seriously, Nintendo needs to look back to a time when they had every kind of game, from mature, plot and character heavy games to family friendly ones. They need to remember these times and start bringing them back.

Bummer

The graphics need to be equivalent to the 360, or I won't purchase one. That controller looks lame, lame, lame. If it's not better than what's already on the shelf why would anyone want it? The specs on the last we were slightly better than the xbox, but the games weren't nearly as good. Not one game on the Wii rivals the awesomeness that was San Andreas. I ask why? If the specs were better, where were all the awesome free roam games, the sandbox games that everyone loves?
