No CGI for Peter Dinklage in X-Men: Days of Future Past according to Bryan Singer

02.22.2013

Dinklage and Singer

Will someone please just tell us who the hell Peter Dinklage is playing in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST? When it was first revealed that he had signed on to the film many people speculated he would be playing Puck from Alpha Flight. That was debunked when it was reported Dinklage would be playing the main antagonist, and a lot of us then assumed he'd be playing a CGI heavy character.

Not true, says Bryan Singer. IGN spoke with the director, and he revealed that whoever Peter Dinklage is playing isn't a character that needs CGI:

He’s not going to be a CGI characte. He’ll be himself. Not that he’ll be playing Peter Dinklage, he’ll be playing this character. It’s not a shy character. He’s just such a phenomenal actor; I’m a huge fan of Peter’s and Game of Thrones. He was my first choice and I was really happy [about the casting]. It’s so funny to talk to him because he does that impeccable accent [on Game of Thrones] and then you talk to him and he’s this guy from New Jersey.

Singer also goes on to say that he is currently negotiating with an actor for a role in the flick and that there are still roles left to be cast for "younger" characters, so more news could be coming very quickly.

While there's a chance that Peter Dinklage could be playing a completely new orginal character for X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, I think he will end up playing someone from the comics. MODOK has been a popular choice but I don't believe 20th Century Fox has the rights to the character, and MODOK has primarily battled The Avengers. As far as what "younger characters" we might see? Storm? Jean Grey? Lets brainstorm in the Strikeback, boys and girls.

Extra Tidbit: Based on the trailers, the CGI in Bryan Singer's JACK THE GIANT SLAYER doesn't look too hot in my opinion. With so much CGI that will probably be used for X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST (the Sentinels in particular) does this concern you?

Bantam

How about Trevor Fitzroy's shitty sidekick Bantam? He has a fairly big part in the whole DOFP storyline and I'm sure Singer could work the character differently to work with the story and Dinklages acting.

That's been suggested before. The problem is that Arcade has no back story in the comics which means that Singer will have to invent a back story for him that is somehow a consequence of what our heroes are trying to prevent. Presumably he is somebody in charge of the Sentinel program which is not who Arcade was in the comics.

If they really want to throw us a curveball, they could have Dinklage play Miguelito Loveless.

Ideas who Peter could be

Peter Dinklage could realistically be playing any of the humans from the X-Men universe. Some ideas who he could be.

Simon Trask - brother of Boliver, who actually hates mutants more than his brother
Stephen Lang - A doctor, and manufacturer of the Sentinels
Matthew Risman - Worked along side William Stryker, and I believe he was apart of time travel to kill off mutants

re: Jack and the Giant Slayer

The studio is dumping Jack with what appears to be a bare-thin marketing campaign and in a release slot that doesn't connotate "tent pole", let alone "blockbuster" or even "sleeper". More like "Dump". They obviously wouldn't let anything like that happen to the X-Men franchise. I wouldn't worry.

Sony

Why would it matter if Sony has the rights to any character? The X-Men films are produced by Fox.

Sony doesn't have the rights to Modok, or any of the X-Men for that matter. I think you may have meant FOX. As for the tidbit: no, I'm sure he'll have a much larger budget for a movie in an established franchise like X-Men than he did for relatively untested material like JTGS.

Awesome that Peter Dinklage has joined this cast. Love him as an actor, way before he was on Game of Thrones. I take it from Singer's comments that he's most likely playing a human character. My guess is that he's either a government official, or running the company that is building the Sentinels, therefore the main antagonist in the film. Something akin to Bolivar Trask from the comics.
I'm hoping one of the younger characters is Cyclops and he somehow corrects the mistake of killing him

I'm hoping one of the younger characters is Cyclops and he somehow corrects the mistake of killing him off in X3. I would love to see him recast with someone that enjoys playing the character (a la Robert Downey or Hugh Jackman) so we can get more flicks with Cyclops front and center.

Cyclops would be a kid on 1973. I know most fans want to see him again, but if Bryan includes his young version, it would be another continuity/chronology error.
Id preffer new characters like Polaris, Sunfire or Dazzler (as a minor role)

Extra tidbit: I'll have any concern or worry when I see some hint of The Sentinel first. Then we'll see.

I'm guessing Bolivar Trask or an equivalent of the character is now the most likely option.

I thought of Bolivar Trask too. Or maybe it's Henry Gyrich.
