No Lex in Supes 2?

Jan. 6, 2009by:

Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor There was a report a while back that Kevin Spacey had already signed on to reprise his role as Lex Luthor in the proposed SUPERMAN sequel/possible reboot MAN OF STEEL so most of us thought that he'd once again be Kal-El's main antagonist with one or two other baddies thrown in for good measure. However, the folks over at "Latino Review" have learned that WB is currently hearing pitches from writers all over town with stories in which Luthor is not the villain but rather a new baddie from Superman's Rogues Gallery. Does that mean Lex is completely out and Braniac, Doomsday, Darkseid or whoever else is in? Or just that Lex will take a back seat to the bad guy as he did when Zod came after Supes during the Christopher Reeve era? It's unclear at this point but at least it means that WB is looking for a brand new take on the sequel/possible reboot that will hopefully not involve a ludicrous plan to kill off the entire planet to make room for land that can be sold to…aliens? Anyhoo, strike it back below, schmoes.

Extra Tidbit: If Doomsday can make it onto "Smallville", he sure as hell needs to be on the big screen. Just make Kevin Smith's SUPERMAN LIVES already! That had Braniac and Doomsday in it and it was awesome!

Thank God!!!

Don't get me wrong. Kevin Spacey was the best part of Superman Returns.

But it was such a terrible effing movie.

When did it become truth, justice, and the ditching of child support?

You guys are right. Just do Kevin's great Superman Lives script.

I hope Brian Singer is back!

Superman Returns was great. The people who talk crap should shut the hell up. They bitch about it being a love story, and they say Supes never fought anyone.
Did any of those people see the original Superman? Same damn thing.
When news of a reboot came out it tore me up. I hope Brian Singer, Brandon Routh, and the whole gang are back to do another.

dooms day in smallville was a reaching. let him face some one like ruin or metallo, doomsday and brainiac have been overdone a bit. hell lobo being hired by luthor would be a kick.

SUCKY AT BEST!

I'm sooooooo over superman! I'll be honest I've never really been a huge fan of the man and his red cape, from christopher reeve, dean cain and the final mess that was superman returns. i'm still genuinly shocked when people say they enjoyed superman returns! Am i the only one who was completely bored throughout it?! as big budget comic book movies go, where was the action, the suspense, or hell the entertainment? i think superman has had his time. the best comic book movies are the ones that

best thing to ever come of superman is kevin smith discussing the script he wrote on his live dvd.

Supes

I'm with the majority on this one. It'll be good to see Superman's abilities being tested. His matches with Luther have been cool, but ultimately just a battle of wits. Ha Luther, I switched the currents/reversed time/tricked your computer!"

Actually

They had Luthor involved one too many times. First three movies with Gene Hackman. Then Kevin Spacey. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. Give other villains a chance, for fuck sake. And they'd better be supervillains.

JCPhoenix,
Don't get me wrong, there have been some thoroughly awful episodes of Smallville, and Lana brought the show to a screeching halt whenever it was a Lana-heavy epsiode (most of the first 2 seasons, a lot of 5)... BUT season 7 is so far the best season they've ever done. Why? Gough and Millar are gone. Kreuk's gone. Welling seems to actually give a damn again. These last few years he was obviously phoning it in. But the show is more 'Superman' than it's ever been right now. I think

I think Erica Durance and Tom Welling have far more chemistry than Brandon Routh and Kate Bosworth did... two actors I admire, but the script was a piece of crap. And when Rosenbaum lets loose as Luthor he blows Spacey away. Not to mention James Marsters as Brainiac... he's damn good. So I highly doubt it will happen, but I think they have a lot to work with.

If they're gonna have Luthor, it should be Spacey being possessed by Brainiac a'la the "Whatever Happened To The Man Of Tomorrow" story. That way, they can introduce a new villain and continue with their Luthor fixation.

Really, though I'd rather see Metallo or Parasite in addition to Brainiac.

I would also add the opinion that this is probably Supes' last shot at the big screen..WB won' t keep pouring big money into flicks that don't net them a tentpole franchise.

Good News

Spacey sucked, although I think this was primarily due to the part being based on the god-awful Hackman incarnation. Dump the entire cast, except Routh, and for the love of Zod, let's please all agree to ignore the stupid-as-fuck super-kid.

Routh was great, and he really is a good actor, he just had a bad, convoluted script and too many character restrictions imposed on him by Singer. I loved Returns but Singer needs to let go of the retro and get a kick ass, epic script if he's going to do this one.

Shame...

Spacey was really the only good thing in this movie. I'd like to see him at least make a guest spot...perhaps from prison. How about Brainiac, Bizarro, etc.?

Routh was just too young looking and let's get rid of "Cyclops" in this whole thing.

tom welling would be a terrible choice. the movies should be kept separate from smallville. i've enjoyed the show off and on, but nobody from that show belongs in a big screen superman.

keep routh. keep spacey in the background. get a new villain, but not zod again. keep the sydney, australia location. let singer have another shot if he can convince he'll really do it Wrath of Kahn style. if not singer, get somebody with a real pedigree for good movies, not some guy who cut his teeth

Smith's script sucked

OK, it didn't suck completely but it just tried to condense too much into a single movie. And making Doomsday nothing more that a henchman for Brainiac who is on the movie for like 5 minutes took out any kind of appeal this character has.
As for Luthor being in or out, I don't care. The simple presence or absence of a character a good movie makes not. And don't get me started on Smallville. Welling's acting abilities haven't developed a bit since he started the show and his enthusiasm for the

Welling's acting abilities haven't developed a bit since he started the show and his enthusiasm for the character seems to have been long gone. The show could've been awesome if they condensed the whole thing into 4 solid seasons instead of the ups and very low downs we keep getting all the time. Dammit.

Wakkidus - that would be about the worst thing WB could do. The cast of Smallville can barely act. Calling any of the writers from Smallville "top tier" is laughable at best - the writing is cheesy and pretty consistently cringeworthy. Using those actors and writers would automatically give the film a small-screen feel - what is okay on television would be laughed off the screen in theatres.

And yes, before you ask if I've actually watched Smallville, I watched the first six seasons in their entirety. I'm not going to deny it's an entertaining show but never during any of those six seasons did I actually fool myself into thinking any of it was well-written. It's not.

I agree that Lex should be out of the picture on this one. There are plenty of other villains for Superman to battle. However, I do think the movie should be a sequel and not a reboot. Of course we all simply ignore Supes III and IV, But the first two, and yes, Superman Returns are the best incarnations of Superman that you're going to get. The universe just needs to be expanded with new villains.

Tom Welling, dammit!

The smartest thing WB could do (in my eyes, at least) is use the cast of Smallville in the next big screen Superman movie. Get Jeph Loeb (or one of the other top tier writers from the show's long run) to pen the script. It would be excellent. Just no Lana... she blows.
