Nobody is safe in the first trailer for Steven Spielberg's Bridge of Spies

06.05.2015

Steven Spielberg's latest, BRIDGE OF SPIES, is a dramatic thriller set against the backdrop of a series of historic events, telling the story of a Brooklyn lawyer (Tom Hanks) who finds himself thrust into the center of the Cold War when the CIA sends him on the near-impossible task to negotiate the release of a captured American U-2 pilot. Aside from the tried and true director, the script written by Matt Charman and Ethan Coen & Joel Coen has been the biggest draw, and now we have a trailer to give us an idea of what we can expect.

Some images from the film:

Right off the bat, this is a movie that feels more like a B-list Spielberg entry that something that's a "must see" in theaters. All of the elements are there and it's not a bad looking film, but it feels very paint-by-numbers. I was a little upset that John Williams wouldn't be collaborating with Spielberg for this entry, but after watching the trailer, it doesn't look like we're missing much. I'm hoping a second trailer will bring something a little more compelling to the forefront.

BRIDGE OF SPIES will be released on October 16, 2015.

B-List? Really? Feels like a trolling attempt. The trailer looks pretty solid, with a Speilberg feel and strong cast. Hanks is tremendous. This looks to me like a surprising and compelling film.

Ha, okay...

So I actually decided to go ahead and read the article with this, instead of just watching the video, like I normally do. I was quickly reminded why I very seldom read the articles. A [link] Really? Just because the trailer doesn't show the entire movie like so many do nowadays and you're not sure what to expect? Give me a break.

Cool.

Looks good. Solid trailer that doesn't give too much away. I think it'll do well.

Forget it

I would love to see this trailer, but the 30 minute add prevents me from watching it.

Way to advertise the movie Fox...

I saw the pic of the trailer with Hanks holding the umbrella, and I thought it was an article on Road to Perdition.

I'm going to assume everyone saying this looks lame is 12 years old? Maybe 13? The last time Spielberg did something along these lines he gave us the spectacular Munich. Lord, even the article writer calling it a B-movie? Really?

You guys are kidding right? This looks to be very special. This is in no way looks like a "B" entry for Spielberg by any means. I for one am very excited about this.

Looks good, maybe conventional but that's not necessarily a bad thing, plus the Coen's writing. I only wish Spielberg would branch out with another DP. You can still see the Spielberg touch, but Kaminski's lensing is looking stale....

It tends to e kinda dark. I agree that his pale dark palette is not appropriate for every film, especially now that so many filmmakers are also doing it.
I know SS loves film, but I would love to see what he does with digital. Digital has so many more options that have yet to be touched on. And it will be interesting to see what someone like SS does with it rather than just the ones looking to cut costs.

Spielberg is overrated these days, with films that are usually too saccharine. I think he gets a pass for his films (no matter the quality) just because of his name.

With all that said, I do enjoy the Indiana Jones trilogy and Saving Private Ryan. And, I may check this particularly film out on DVD.

Lame

Sorry to say but IDK I don't think Spielberg has that flare anymore that used to carry his films. This movie looked so cliche, and its kind of boring seeing historial movies already. I wish they would make one in which takes place in a what would of happen if this didn't happen kind of deal. Like I really want to see a movie in which the japanese won and drop the bomb on us instead of them where would we be what would we be.

So, maybe a follow-up to 1941?

More than likely a future classic.

All the elements are there and Hanks and the Beard bring magic together. The more I revisit Catch me if you can the more blown away I am by how amazing of a film it is. Speilberg's "weakest" entries are still head and shoulders above most of what's in theaters now. B-List!?! You have astronomically high standards!

Agree, this trailer looks like it'll be something special. Just has that "feel" to it.

2015 is the year of the SPIES!

Spy, The Man from U.N.C.L.E, Spectre, M:I Rogue Nation, and now Bridge of Spies and let's not forget about Kingsman: The Secret Service. I'm sure I'm forgetting a few more.

SS films always look cool. There is something about how every shot just looks cool. It's not an entirely realistic look, but perfect in how his cinematic vision translates to viewers.

Hanks/Spielberg

I wouldn't necessarily call any Spielberg film a "B-List" film. Glad to see another collaboration with Hanks, a new collaboration with the Coen brothers and Thomas Newman, and an interesting tone. Has some "Munich" elements to it which I like. Definitely looking forward to seeing more from this film before release.
