Nolan chats on TDK Blu

11.18.2008

Not like you needed another reason to buy THE DARK KNIGHT when it hits hi-def disc on December 9th, but...

Director Christopher Nolan will get into the whole media meta with his movie's Blu-Ray release, utilizing the DVD's BD-Live feature for real-time Q&A with the fans.

Guillermo del Toro is doing the same on November 23rd for owners of HELLBOY II, but Warner Bros. is capping eligible participants for THE DARK KNIGHT chat to the first 100,000 registered Blu buyers.

My prediction for the first five questions: "When are you starting the sequel?" "What will the sequel be about?" "Why haven't you announced the sequel yet?" "Why hasn't TDK made more than TITANIC cuz it's like soooo much better OMFG!!!!?" and "Why does Batman have that completely ridiculous voice?"

Extra Tidbit: (Okay, that last one was mine.)

voice

the voice is representation of the mind state Bruce is in when he's in the suit, he's a different person, he's a character, it just proves the extent of his transformation in to The Batman, i'm not even sure he know he does it

I thought it was pretty well understood from BBegins that Batman's voice was altered and amplified by the batsuit itself. When he's assembling the pieces of the suit, there are earphones and microphone and speakers (if I'm not mistaken) that he's building into the suit.

Wow, In all the posts, how is now one actually excited the Nolan is going to connect with the fans here? And in such a cool way via the Blu-Ray Live feature.

I know some are just having a laugh here, but some others need to get over it.

Maybe Batman has a cold but still fights with Joker to save Gotham and obviously he doesn't have time to buy cough drops, haha. Just a joke. I like Batman's voice.

The voice is good , but one note.. whatever he's saying he's gravelly yelling.. 'ALFRED GET ME SOME COFFEE!!!' . Couldn't he have a whisper mode for when he's not all pissed off..? [link] that its ...ful of...people...that are..GOOOOOD' remember when he first talks to Gordon in his office, he was whispering and it sounded great, and disguises his wayne voice fine.

first off, cant wait for the release, ... second, people shut up about the voice, you say you understand why it had to be different but didnt like the way it was .... are you serious. what would you like Bale to do, i know he is a great actor but to somehow find some untapped voice of his that he never knew about would be kind of hard. he does normal voice and scruffy voice, nowhere else to go. anyway, .... good ears, mutant gorilla, i was also thinking the same thing when i heard it.

I love how no-one seems to care about the upcoming release, only Bale's Batman voice. Since that's the topic at hand, though, I might as well say that I thought the voice was absolutely horrible. I know it was meant to sound, well, scary, but it really just sounded like he gargled with whiskey and bits of broken glass.

I didn't know Christian Bale did a voice in Howl's Moving Castle, until the scene where he turns into the giant black bird and talks EXACTLY like his batman voice.

Well said BROKENDREAMER. I'm pretty tired of all the whining about the voice. It's funny, I remember people loving it in BATMAN BEGINS ("Swear to me!!" remember that?) but I didn't notice much of a change in it with THE DARK KNIGHT. Maybe just because he was Batman more than Bruce and people weren't used to hearing a lot of it? *shrug* I personally love it. Just goes to show what a vocal range Christan Bale has got. Not to mention Heath Ledger with The Joker as well.

Thank you so much for the unneeded explanation, bro. I think the comlaint with the voice is more with the way it is, then the fact that it's different. But...

The Voice

On the last question, regarding Batman's voice, I think the answer might be that Bruce Wayne uses the voice to mask his identity, which fits the efforts at realism because I am sure a man who is as well known as Bruce Wayne would also have a recognizable voice. The reason why he uses that gruff, deep voice, I assume, is because the purpose of Batman is to "turn fear against those who prey on the fearful." The reason why he uses that gruff, deep voice, I assume, is because the purpose of Batman is to "turn fear against those who prey on the fearful." Thus, it wouldn't make sense for the imposing figure that is Batman to have a gentle, wimpy voice. I am sure this was what Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale had in mind when they chose to use that voice. It might be grating at times, but I think its purpose is to add realism (by disguising his voice) and also evoke some fear in his enemies. It also helps to make him more of a symbol and disconnects him from Bruce Wayne (if not for the change in voice, everyone would have known immediately that Harvey Dent was not the Batman, but because of the masked voice, anyone can be Batman). The voice can almost be considered a part of the symbol he is trying to create: a symbol that will strike fear into the criminals of Gotham. I guess the voice can be irritating, but I don't think it is without purpose. If Bruce used his regular voice, someone would recognize him or, at the very least, the Batman would still be tied in to Bruce Wayne. By changing his voice, he creates someone entirely different, someone scarier. I think Nolan and Bale deserve more credit for this choice.
