Nominations for the 71st Annual Golden Globes have been announced!

Dec. 12, 2013by: Paul Shirey

The nominations for the 71st annual Golden Globes were announced today, ushering in nods to many of the films we expected and a few we didn't. AMERICAN HUSTLE, 12 YEARS A SLAVE, GRAVITY, and CAPTAIN PHILLIPS are among those with more than a few nominations, but there's a few surprises, like Ron Howard's RUSH getting some love (the most underrated movie of 2013 in my opinion) and on the flip side the omission of folks like Martin Scorsese for THE WOLF OF WALL STREET (with only two nominations, surprisingly). Scroll below to check out the full list and hit us back with your thoughts on these shenanigans.

I am very happy that film and Bruhl are on here. Bruhl was amazing in that film.

Some Immediate Thoughts

-Nothing for Mad Men!? NOTHING!?
-Fuck yeah, Breaking Bad
-It's hard to judge the movie categories, because most of them haven't been released yet. But at least all the movies in question are all getting stellar reviews as opposed to years past (The Tourist, anyone?)
-I STILL stand by my position on 12 Years a Slave : a very well made film with great acting. But more than anything else, it just felt like an excuse to show slavery brutality for 2 hours. Just didn't compute with me like it did

Mad Men had its weakest season yet this eligibility round. You can't let that happen in such a competitive market.

-Mad Men will clean house in two years after it airs its final season. It will get a LOTR type send off.

- Yeah, it is a very strong list of nominees. I remember three years ago when Burlesque was nominated for best film.

- 12 Years a Slave was a really good film but there are so many films that were better than it. I don't think it will make my top ten of the year.

I'm really excited about the Best Supporting Actor nominations the most. There have been so many great selections to choose from this year. I just hope Prisoners doesn't get shut out when it comes Oscar time.

I totally agree with both actors. I think no matter who wins that category, I will be happy. I would love to see Cooper or Fassbender win for American Hustle or 12 Years A Slave as well.

But I also think either Franco, Gyllenhall, or Affleck should be nominated too. They all gave amazing performances.

Part of me wants Bruhl to win because that performance was full of heart and carried the emotion of that picture. The other part of me wants Leto to win because it was a powerhouse performance in a film that I think is one of the best pictures of the year.

100% agree. It should be up for Best Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actor, and maybe best Screenplay.

Hopefully Prisoners gets a nod from the Academy Awards, if for nothing more than the acting.
surprising in the best pic category? Philomena, while I liked it a lot, I don't think it merits best picture honors.

"Masters of Sex" for best Drama series, but no "Game of Thrones"? Don't get me wrong, I like "Masters of Sex", but GoT is way better.

I LOVE I heart huckabees, but not crazy ab his last two more mainstream films. The Fighter was bland, and Silver LP has its' charms, but the dance scene, the fn climax of the film, makes no fn sense. I'd hate to see him shoot a fight scene. Also, I know those ppl and they do not exist like that in the movie. And 2 crazy ppl like that would never work out. Ever. So many terrible character motivations, but again, it has its' charms (and a good impression of Vince Vaughn via Bradley Cooper)

Hollywood, Foreign, Press. Three words that don't mix well at all.

I did not realize "The Wolf of Wall Street" is a comedy or a musical?
No Scorsese direction nomination?
No Hugh Jackman nomination for Prisoners???
No screenplay nomination for Before Midnight????????
LET'S NOT FORGET THIS IS THE SAME GROUP WHICH NOMINATED "THE TOURIST" FOR BEST PICTURE COMEDY OR MUSICAL JUST A FEW YEARS BACK.

Most is obvious and aren't risky but....
YEAH YEAH YEAH for Greta Gerwig. It's incredibly she got a nod. And YEAH for Jared Leto, though I figured he would. And BOO BOO BOO anything to do with Blue Jasmine. How hard is it to play a terrible human being, especially one unlike Larry David who is funny. Also, ppl need to get the fuck over prisoners, or go watch it again. It's a solid movie, and I really like Jake G in it, but does it deserve nominations? Absolutely night. Am I the only

I mean it's a good, well-made film, but not an award winner (or nom getter), unless it's for Jake G. I really liked his mysterious character and would watch a sequel of his character. But I felt like Hugh was relatively in his range.

I'm with you. Jake should have a shot at Best Supporting. I do think Roger Deakins deserves some consideration for cinematography, but that's about it. I'd be cool with it sneaking into the final Best Picture spot, but it's not some travesty that it's omitted.

I have to get into this show. I was over my friend's house, with her boyfriend, and a commercial came on for the show. It was an episode from this season where they broke someone out of prison. The sheer madness in the clip resulted me in asking if it was the season finale. They both laughed and said no, crazy shit happens on that show all the time.

All over the place...

First of all, why is "The Wind Rises" not nominated for best animated feature but instead only nominated for best foreign language film?? It's infinitely superior to any of the other films up for animation. I will never understand the US's complete blindness to foreign animation during award season.

On the other hand it's nice to see some actual substance in the Comedy & Musical category for once.

Being a huge fanboy of Idris Elba's it's really exciting to see him up for best actor in

...oh and GO BREAKING BAD!! WOOT!

.

Mini-Series should be in the same category as Series.

You can't trim 8 episodes off a full season and fall into a different category.

If it's good enough to lump actresses and actors from all 3....

I like the movie noms, tv shows not so much.

How did Game of Thrones not get nominated for any awards! I love Breaking Bad but Game of Thrones is the best show on tv. No respect for fantasy/sci fi when comes to awards unless it's special effects such bullshit! Really the Good Wife, Downtown Abby and Masters of Sex getting the nod over Thrones. Not like those three shows are bad but seriously. The North will remember this! Why do I even care?

The movie awards are about spot on for me though I'm sad that MUD is getting completely forgotten just because it was not released during "awards season". As for TV, I'm so glad they didn't forget Corey Stoll for House Of Cards the way the Emmys did. That show is amazing and he's a key to that

not suprised about prisoners

I had high hopes that it would get at least one nod. Not getting my hopes up for the oscars either. And I knew it was a long shot but no casey affleck for supporting either.. glad to see 12 years a slave up there though!
