Now it’s Park Chan-wook’s Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance getting remade

Another of Park Chan-wook’s films is getting the remake treatment. OLDBOY was recently remade by Spike Lee and is coming out this fall, while Charlize Theron has been toying with making her own version of SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE for a few years now. Now the first of his famed “vengeance trilogy”, SYMPATHY FOR MR. VENGEANCE, is being tossed into the remake-o-matic. Good luck with this one, boys.

Deadline reports Silver Reel and Lotus Entertainment have partnered with di Bonaventura Pictures and CJ Entertainment for an English-language remake of MR. VENGEANCE, which was scripted bby Brian Tucker (BROKEN CITY). A director has not been picked yet.

Here’s how the plot of the original breaks down:

Unable to afford proper care for his sister dying from kidney failure, Ryu turns to the black market to sell his own organs only to end up cheated of his life savings. His girlfriend urges Ryu to kidnap the daughter of wealthy industrialist Dong-jin, who recently laid him off. Ryu agrees, but unforeseen tragedies turn an innocent con into a merciless quest for revenge. Bound by their personal losses and deep-seated anger, the two men are thrust into a spiral of destruction.

SYMPATHY FOR MR. VENGEANCE is an incredibly dark, disturbing thriller, so you can expect the remake to smooth over its gritty edge and complex morality.
