Now this is strange - the Doctor Strange movie really moving forward?

01.26.2012

StrangeFierceBy the hoary hosts of Hoggoth!

We reported almost six months ago that the Doctor Strange movie was maybe possibly getting some traction, which was an awesome birthday present as Doctor Strange actually ranks as one of my very favorite superheroes. And while the news hasn't changed all too much in the interim, here is what the official deal is as of today: 1) The script by Joshua Oppenheimer and Thomas Donnelly (CONAN THE BARBARIAN) has been completed, turned in, and approved. 2) Marvel Studios is "actively seeking a director to come in and helm the project. Once the director has come on board, they will then be searching for the cast to star in Doctor Strange." 3) "Production on Doctor Strange is expected to begin this year, with a release date likely to be sometime in 2013."

Now that last point may seem on the hopeful side, but considering today is only the 25th of January that gives Marvel nearly the whole year to find a director, sink into some pre-production, cast, and begin shooting. That being said, and even with word that a DOCTOR STRANGE movie wouldn't nearly have the kind of budget past Marvel films have used, I do think that a 2013 release date is a bit too hopeful. Unless they want to release in early October? Because that'd be kind of cool. The current known Marvel release slate sits like this: THE AVENGERS (May 4th), IRON MAN 3 (May 3rd, 2013), and THOR 2 (November 15th, 2013).

A small synopsis of Doctor Strange's story for you: "Doctor Strange centers around a New York surgeon who stops running his practice after suffering injuries in a car crash. He then becomes a drifter and heads to the Himalayas, where he meets a healer and discovers that he has a great psychic power to fight against evil.  Doctor Strange boasts powers that includes telepathy, teleportation and energy and astral projection."

Extra Tidbit: There's some past precedent with Marvel for releasing movies close together with THOR and CAPTAIN AMERICA. Think it could happen with THOR 2 and DOCTOR STRANGE?

Admitted, I'm not a comic book reader and only know the super heroes that every Jo and his sister know.
But Doctor Strange's backstory sounds very cool and original. Would love to see this.

2013? Naw...

dont buy they'll do it. They don't rush their projects and seem to do two films max a year, don't see why they'd crowd out 2013 with three flicks when they can hold onto this one and release it in 2014. Whatevers maybe Im wrong.

I wonder what age range they'll have for casting. I've always thought Gary Oldman would own as Doctor Strange but I'm guessing Marvel would say he's too old.

Jim Caviezel? Oh Yeah!
There's no way this hits until 2014, however. The writers of Conan is the only bad news I read in that article.

Strange could be awesome in the hands of somebody like Del Toro or Cuaron, but in the wrong hands it could be cheesier than Green Lantern. I worry about a script from the team behind Conan the Barbarian, but as long as that films "director" isn't involved...

I could see Patrick Dempsey as Dr Strange. Or Andrew Lincoln from the Walking Dead. He would make an excellent Strange.

I was kind of hoping they would get Timothy Olyphant for this movie. The dude deserves his own hit franchise. I trust Marvel to cast this appropriately, they've done a good job so far.

Whatever. None of the talent currently attached or being batted around interests me. Am I the only one who remembers the days when this was going to be a Del Toro/Neil Gaiman project? Now THAT was exciting.

GAHHH that was SO f*cking exciting. I actually fell asleep twice in CONAN, so agreed. Not too exciting yet. I used to think Robert Downey Jr. would be a good Sorcerer Supreme, but now that he's Tony Stark that can't really happen. And anyway, I don't think that way so much anymore, so it's just as well. Who would you pick?

Can't wait for this film. Doctor Strange is a great superhero and deserves his own great film/franchise like Iron Man, Captain America, etc.

For casting my personal pick is Patrick Dempsey. He's a little old but he is a great actor and looks the part. Plus he has gone on record saying that he is a big fan of the character and would love a shot to play him.

Patrick Dempsey would be okay for a TV movie the way David Hasselhoff was fine as Nick Fury for a TV movie.
