NSA leaker Edward Snowden's story to become a movie from Oliver Stone

06.02.2014

Oliver Stone is no stranger to political filmmaking, whether that be the true story or one from a conspiracy theory perspective. Through films like JFK, W., and WORLD TRADE CENTER, Stone has examined significant events in American history through a very unique lens. Not even factoring in his documentary films, Oliver Stone has made a career out of making polarizing films. His next will continue that trend with one of the most controversial subjects of the last year.

Deadline is reporting that Stone and producing partner Moritz Borman have purchased the rights to Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Luke Harding's book about Edward Snowden. Snowden is the former NSA employee who released countless documents regarding surveillance being done on American citizens before fleeing to Europe where he remains to this day. The controversy that ignited from Snowden's hacking has put him on a list along with WikiLeaks' Julian Assange as an important figure in the state of privacy, technology, and government control.

Oliver Stone's film will be a European co-production that will have the support of The Guardian newspaper where author Luke Harding reported on the Snowden news. This will be Stone's next film after dropping out of helming a biopic of Martin Luther King, Jr. There currently is no release or production date for the film but expect it go get underway sometime this year. It will definitely be a controversial film if Stone has anything to do with it so expect more news as it develops.

who should play Snowden?

the Rock would be cool. and if Snowden is like some secret NSA agent that's been framed. and the bad guy Feds are chasing him through the globe while he tries to prove his innocence. then he teams up with Julian Assange (played by Kevin Hart) and Optimus Prime (also played by Kevin Hart).

Stone is usually hit or miss, but I always find his movies interesting enough to at least watch once. I think Ben Foster would be an interesting choice for Snowden.

Stone has become a hack. He'll turn this into a big-time conspiracy movie...Look what he wanted to do with the MLK movie. He wanted to talk about his apparent adultery and other bad things...F Stone.

He wanted to tell the TRUE story of the man... it would still that what MLK did was world changing and that he was 1 of the most important ppl to ever live... but he wanted to tell the full story if the man... not just the Disney highlights

SkyNet, so Stone wanted to make a movie honoring MLK, but also talking about how he did bad things..How is that a movie honoring him?...Stone "Hey, let's make a movie showing how great MLK was, but also show his fuck ups."

And it wouldn't just be Disney highlights because nothing was easy for him. He had his struggles.

@Bob: "he had his struggles." And that's exactly what Stone wanted to show. Not just the legend. But the man. The infallible man. The man with flaws. A man who wasn't perfect but who was great in his own right. It in no way hinders or infringes upon his integrity or greatness. So I ask you, why not show the story behind the great man? Do you think I wanna see a 3 hour bore fest about shit I've already known and heard since kinder garden? Or do I want to see the great story that made the man

""he had his struggles." And that's exactly what Stone wanted to show."...I was talking about the struggles he faced in what he was trying to do, not the struggles with his marriage.

"And I bet you must think Colombus was a saint too."...So you have serious reply, but then you end it by making fun of me. How marvelous.

I hope this will be a return to form for Stone cause " Savages " was a little disappointment and above all " Wall Street : Money Never Sleeps " was the biggest deception of the decade for me !
The story is interesting, I hope he will come back to his furious style he did not use since " Any Given Sunday "...
Who must play the main character ?

Ugh, Stone is washed up and hasn't made a good movie in over a decade.

This is on one of my polls for who is going to take over which persons story.

Oliver Stone for Snowden and Oprah for Maya Angelou. The only way I can lose is if Tyler Perry snatches the Angelou rights within the next few days.
