Obligatory Ghostbusters 3 update: Ivan Reitman is really truly planning to shoot in Summer 2013

Oct. 18, 2012by: Alejandro Stepenberg

Ivan Reitman on couch with camera

I know you've heard it all before and you're wondering what's different about this planned start date in comparison to any of the last updates about when and how GHOSTBUSTERS 3 would get up and running.

So here's what I know: Ivan Reitman had another movie lined up to direct, DRAFT DAY starring Kevin Costner. But Paramount decided against getting the movie going "in the small window that Reitman has before he is expected to finally get the long-gestating Ghostbusters reboot in front of the cameras next summer for Sony Pictures (sans Bill Murray)."   Which is about as definite as this is going to get without an official press release, but it still shows you that this is very much happening and there's just about nothing you can do about it.

Dan Aykroyd had this to say back in 2011 about the state of the old characters at the start of the story, as well as who and what they're looking for insofar as the new team goes: "My character, Ray, is now blind in one eye and can't drive the cadillac.  He's got a bad knee and can't carry the packs... Egon is too large to get into the harness. We need young blood and that's the promise. We're gonna hand it to a new generation... I like this guy Matthew Gray Gubler from the 'Criminal Minds' show," he adds, "But there's going to be a casting. We're going to see everyone that wants to do it. We're going to need... three guys and a young woman."

If released in 2014, GHOSTBUSTERS 3 will be able to tie in to the 30 year anniversary of the first movie.

Is there really any explanation needed here?

Extra Tidbit: Somehow my brain never made the connection that director Jason Reitman (JUNO, UP IN THE AIR) was the son of Ivan Reitman. Sigh. Sometimes my brain does very silly things.

Tired...

Not so much tired of the updates. Just tired of all the crying that comes with it. Get over it guys. I am going to explode if I hear any one say it is a cash grab again. This has been trying to get underway for how long? Since the mid 90s? OH WAIT... the people bitching over this project forgot that huh?

Regardless of the plot, I'm going to watch the new Ghostbusters movie anyway. I hope some of SNL casts would be in the movie as well.

Without Bill on board....

I'm still interested but only if they have a hell of a good young cast.

Well

First, I gotta say, I really enjoy Ghostbusters, and now my 4 year old daughter really loves it. But I'm also glad they are using "new blood", I love the original guys, but lets face it, I don't want to see these guys headlining the movie. Yes, I would love for them to make a "cameo" or even a bigger role, but def time for some fresh faces to carry the franchise further. As far as Billy Murray goes, I can definetly do without him. he really didn't make the movie for me and could care less if

The originals will always be classics - the natural feel to the relationships between the characters isn't something that's easy to replicate. Thing about Ghostbusters is, it's a fantastic concept and one that's strong enough to withstand reimagining for a modern audience, and obviously modern effects are capable of creating anything, but it'll live or die on the strengths of the the new cast they choose and it'll lose a certain amount of charm with CGI and a more modern New York setting.

It's a tough call, but the concept has enough potential for this to be worth a shot, and I'm sure all involved will be massively aware of what they're potentially screwing up.

i'm willing to wait

I probably will see it when it comes out, but i'm not on the edge of my seat waiting. I still think it should open with an old Bill Murray dying on a case, which cause the young guys to take over. And have Bill Murray cameo again at the end as a ghost. Cheesy but it could work.

And i'm still nominating Ivan Reitman for Movie Jail

I've long stopped caring about this. At this point, I just want to express my utter indifference to this whole project. Maybe it'll be good. I figure at best it'll be mediocre. And that just does nothing for me. I'll stick with the original. A lot less baggage involved.

I'll believe it when it happens. The longer this goes on, the older these guys get, the more unlikely it seems like it's going to happen. Not that I am excited about a sequel anyway, but this has gone on so long, the whole thing is starting to sound like, even if they do get something up, it won't be anywhere close to what fans would want.

For the longest time I was under the impression they wouldn't do it without Murray and Murray wouldn't do it unless it was good. So I figured if it happened, then great because it would have passed his standards. Now that they're doing it without him, it doesn't give me much confidence it will be good.

GHOSTBUSTER 3

You know, I have ALWAYS been excited about the prospect of a GHOSTBUSTERS 3.
However, I now honestly find it VERY difficult to be excited for two huge reasons
1. There is NO Ghostbusters without Bill Murray. Period. To me, he was the best character in GHOSTBUSTERS and GHOSTBUSTERS 2. His character carried the movies and made them work.
How can they go ahead with this without him? I believe that when Dan Aykroyd & Harold Ramis & Ivan Reitman
finally realized that Murray really was not going

How can they go ahead with this without him? I believe that when Dan Aykroyd & Harold Ramis & Ivan Reitman
finally realized that Murray really was not going to be on board for GB3 they shlould have just let the whole thing go. I have a really bad feeling that this is going to be something they all regret doing while Bill Murray sits back watching, shaking his head saying "I told ya so!"
2. Unless things have changed for the plot as described above by Aykroyd, I think that it just sounds horrible!
Sorry but, I just don't want to see a GHOSTBUSTERS movie with "new blood" while the original crew sits on
the sidelines. Where is the fun in that?
So, in conclusion, as much as it pains me to say it, write it, and think it, I just don't care if it happens or not.
Unless Murray somehow changes his mind and decides to do GB3 afterall, they just aren't going to get my money.

This sounds absolutley horrible

Without Murray, there just isn't any Ghostbusters. And if Aykroyd is serious about that storyline, I can see why Murray doesn't want any part of it.

Time to give up the ghost guys.

God, this sounds like such a cynical, desperate cash-grab.

And it tears me up that Aykroyd is playing into it so eagerly. This guy used to be on the level of Murray and Belushi in the early SNL days. He was a comedy hero of mine. But the fact that he's playing into the cynical, corporate view of this sequel is pathetic. It's all so cold and calculated... "we need three guys and a girl." Why a girl? Because you want to represent females, or draw in horny teenage boys, or both? Be PC and sexist at the same time? Why don't you let the casting dictate the

And without Bill Murray, why even bother? Why not just reboot it and distance yourself unless all you care about is $$$?

Fuck you Danny - Bill Hicks is rolling in his grave.

Instead of just giving my opinion

Here's a clip from Scrubs that sums it up perfectly.

Or for those who won't click, it's Turk singing "NOT GONNA HAPPENNNN! NO, NOT GONNA HAPPEN HA HA!"
Because this movie isn't gonna happen without Bill Murray.

Ghostbusters without Bill Murray. Why bother?

Let's be honest. This is a desperate money grab for everyone involved. Bill Murray is not doing it because he doesn't need to revive his career. I think it would have been much better if they just a)allow Ramis, Akroyd and Ramis to stay on as executive producers,b)hired a new director/writer and c) just rebooted the series with a new cast/concept. As it stands now, we'll have to sit through old Ghostbuster jokes for two hours. Ugh!

The Ghostbusters are abducted by evil ghosts and sent to limbo, and it's up to an unwitting team of college students to get them back.
