Oblivion won’t be released early via IMAX

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

The original plan for Joseph Kosinski’s OBLIVION was for the film to be released in the IMAX format one week prior to its wide release, but that plan has evidently been scrapped. According to Deadline.com, Universal Pictures will now open the film in all of its formats on April 19th, presumably the better to show off those initial box office grosses.

OBLIVION is still on target to open on April 12th internationally, which means star Tom Cruise will be able to promote the sci-fi epic overseas first before heading to the U.S. to shill for it.

As Deadline notes, this move gives Universal’s JURASSIC PARK 3D an extra week on IMAX screens, as that film opens April 5th. Perhaps this is a savvy move by the studio after all…

Also starring Morgan Freeman, Melissa Leo and Olga Kuryleno, OBLIVION goes like this:

Jack Harper (Cruise) is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth. Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs, Jack’s mission is nearly complete. Living in and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, his soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.
