Official Machete notes

08.06.2009

Just yesterday we got the impressive (if inexplicable) list of talent now involved with Robert Rodriguez's MACHETE, expanded to full-length from the popular GRINDHOUSE trailer.

Now we've got a few more details on the project, straight from the filmmaker himself. The official press release:

Robert Rodriguez has cast Jessica Alba (SIN CITY), Robert De Niro, Michelle Rodriguez (FAST & FURIOUS), Lindsay Lohan (MEAN GIRLS), Cheech Marin (ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO), Jeff Fahey ("Lost"), Don Johnson and Steven Seagal (UNDER SIEGE) alongside Danny Trejo in the highly anticipated spin-off action flick, MACHETE. The film is based on the "fake" trailer in Rodriguez’s 2007 GRINDHOUSE, featuring Trejo and Fahey reprising their original roles. MACHETE is being produced by Rodriguez who is the co-director with Ethan Maniquis, his long time editor. Rodriguez and Overnight Productions announced today that shooting is gearing up out of Troublemaker Studios in Austin, Texas.

MACHETE was originally a hard-edged trailer featured in GRINDHOUSE that became fanboy fodder since its first showing at the 2006 Comic-Con. "Machete had become my most requested movie and I never actually made it, so when the opportunity arose to answer the call with such an amazing cast, I jumped." said Rodriguez.

The feature version of the trailer finds Machete (Trejo) a renegade former Mexican Federale, roaming the streets of Texas after a shakedown from drug lord Torrez (Seagal). Reluctantly, Machete takes an offer from spin doctor Benz (Fahey) to assassinate McLaughlin (De Niro) a corrupt Senator. Double crossed and on the run Machete braves the odds with the help of Luz (Rodriguez), a saucy taco slinger, Padre (Marin) his “holy” brother, and April (Lohan) a socialite with a penchant for guns. All while being tracked by Sartana (Alba), a sexy ICE agent with a special interest in the blade slinger.

Rodriguez who also penned the script will serve triple duty as Producer with Elizabeth Avellán of Troublemaker Studios, and Rick Schwartz, Aaron Kaufman, and Iliana Nikolic of Overnight Productions, who will also provide the film's financing.

Extra Tidbit: A form of the character has been around for a while -- Trejo played "Uncle Machete" in SPY KIDS back in 2001.

Can't see this working as actual film

The trailor is funny because it's a 3 minute piss take that they won't be able to spread out over 2 hours and will probably just end up like a stupid action movie itself.

Lame

This is going to flop at the BO, it has very limited appeal. RR better be able to make this movie on a micro-budget if he wants to actually turn a profit.

I still can't believe this is actually happening. I'm so amped, I hope they get it right. For instance, I wonder how they're gonna go about recreating scenes from the trailer. Questions like: will the film have the same look, will they play it off as grindhouse or will they have to settle for a mainstream-ized version of it for it to actually make money. At the end of the day, if it's just a 90-120 minute version of the trailer, I'm down 200%.

HELL YES!

I'm psyced that this being developed in to a feature film, the cast is stellar! especially the additiion of Michelle Rodriguez and Jessica Alba (OMFG!!) I seriously can't wait for this, they should make it a double feature like Planet Terror and Death Proof which also rocked my world!

I cant wait. Is the character the same from the spy kids films? I kinda hope so. Puts a new spin on the world those films are based in.
