Official Synopsis for The Amazing Spider-Man, plus new toy reveals

Jan. 27, 2012by: Paul Shirey

Courtesy of Columbia Pictures, the official synopsis for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN rolls in with a pretty insightful wrap up of what to expect story-wise. Take a gander and meet me at the end and we'll discuss. Sound good?

One of the world's most popular characters is back on the big screen as a new chapter in the Spider-Man legacy is revealed in "The Amazing Spider-Man." Focusing on an untold story that tells a different side of the Peter Parker story, the new film stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, with Martin Sheen and Sally Field. The film is directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay written by James Vanderbilt, based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Laura Ziskin, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach are producing the film in association with Marvel Entertainment for Columbia Pictures, which will open in theaters everywhere in 3D on July 3, 2012.

"The Amazing Spider-Man" is the story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents' disappearance – leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors (Ifans), his father's former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors' alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

All right, we're back.  So, it looks like they're really trying to make this reboot "new" by involving Peter Parker's parents.  They've done this in the comics as well with mixed results.  So, what are the key points to take away?

  • The Lizard/Curt Conners was Peter Parker's father's "lab partner" at Oscorp.
  • Gwen Stacy is "some sorta smart bug" who works at the same lab.
  • Everything hinges on a mysterious suitcase (i.e. cheap McGuffin)

I have to wonder if we'll see a Harry Osborn cameo, seeing as Oscorp is featured in the film.  I doubt we'll see any kind of Mary Jane reference, but you never know.

Also, we have some more useless toys, every bit as ridiculous as the last batch.  Below you will find some truly epic...Spider-Man swimming toys.  Take Spidey and the Lizard to the pool!  Hooray! It's the first reveal of a "full body" shot of The Lizard and it's what it is.

Look, I get it, I have a kid and he is inundated with all of the pop culture toys you could dream of, but there's a limit.  I don't see why we can't have some more relevant products.  THE AVENGERS and THE DARK KNIGHT RISES aren't doing too shabby on their promotional items, but THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN has got serious issues in terms of quality and relevancy with their latest batch of toy gimmicks.

Will there be a swimming action sequence in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN?  Will there be a high-speed quad race?  Will Spider-Man drive a submarine?

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN swims and races his way into theaters on July 3rd, 2012.  Wake me up when it's over.

Extra Tidbit: In comics continuity Peter Parker's parents were revealed to be agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Still think it's unlikely there could be a crossover between The Amazing Spider-Man and The Avengers?

This seems like Degrassi but Spiderman? This will suck. PS I think Betty Brant was his first girlfriend no? Her first app is 1963, Gwen is 1965 so the whole being more accurate is rubbish. Also, X-men first class (which everyone here seems to love) was super INACCURATE and had only 2 original members from the x-men, who is counting accuracy in this film as plus, when the story sounds stupid.

Unprofessional.

You know, I'm sure the filmmakers don't like journalists passing judgement on their films before they are even screened. I'm a journalist myself, and I'd lose my job over shit like this.
And to all the haters: Yes, this movie is going to suck so bad. Who wants to see a GOOD Spidey movie, right?
If something is good enough to be a film, it's good enough to be presented the CORRECT way. Peter doesn't have organic web-shooters, Gwen was his first girlfriend, and his story gets a little emo

Peter doesn't have organic web-shooters, Gwen was his first girlfriend, and his story gets a little emo from time to time. Deal with it, that's how it's suppose to be. Why don't you SEE the film before deciding it's fate? I'm a huge Spidey fan and I'm damn excited to see it. I disliked the Raimi trilogy, yes, even "Spider-Man 2". But then again, I like GOOD stories and have actually read the comics.

This will suck

Trust me folks, I know a couple people who are working behind the scenes on this film, not only are they saying that Webb is WAY over his head and does not understand how to shoot action scenes, but they say the whole production is a disaster. Sony is already having to help him get this thing under control, mark my words, this will be a turd...

I'm classy like San Diego, top. I think you missed my link of ridiculousness to the story. The most common complaints about ASM are the costume, marketing, story, casting, uhh...okay, so just about everything.
When things are silly, like Spider-Man in a submarine, it's hard to take anything else seriously. A really cool pic of Andrew Garfield doesn't really fit.
Plus, it's a fat kid dressed up in a Spider-Man costume...holding a donkey...c'mon...that shit's funny.
Now, if you excuse

Now, if you excuse me, I'm going to go put on my tuxedo and smoke my pipe and read some Tolstoy while listening to Bach. Also, light some candles.

@ Paul Shirey: That whole paragraph DIDN'T SAY ANYTHING. Well done. Obviously a blogger in love with the sound of his own prose. With pictures. *Sigh* - another choice addition to the site.

@Drumphantom38: If by 'worst comments', mr 'frinkin hilarious', you mean not following the flock with my pants around my ankles then yes - I agree.

Well, you can't please everyone all the time. Fortunately, there are plenty of other writers on the site who have their own style, perhaps one that fits the bill for you.

Merchandising, Merchandising!

...where the real money from the movie is made! It's been a well-known fact for quite some time that all Sony cares about is the almighty buck. No matter who (or what) image they have to drive into the ground to get it.

As for the *unnecessary* reboot & the Super Mario goomba-style look of The Lizard...i'm still on the fence. Waiting to see the film itself before making any final judgments.

Let me say first off that I do LOVE the Raimi films. Even though there are flaws as with every film, and #3 WAS a disappointment, it still stands as one of the greater trilogies.

That being said, I have no problem with the IDEA of a reboot. I welcome it. There is always room for improvement, that only a fresh start can create. They should be working towards the "definitive" Spider-man films.

This, however, isn't that. Don't get me wrong, they are righting some wrongs (Gwen first,

This, however, isn't that. Don't get me wrong, they are righting some wrongs (Gwen first, web-shooters), but they are changing everything for the sake of changing. For example, the costume. Spider-man's costume looks like Spider-man. It was perfect last time around. Nobody debated that. It looked like Spider-man, that is a fact. This one is horrid, plain and simple. And then there are the little things like brown-haired Aunt May, no Daily Bugle, no wrestling, Dr Connors and Gwen and Peter all working at Oscorp, Connors knowing Peter's parents, hipster Peter, the whole parent plotline, and motherfucking SWAT LIZARDS!??!

I know the past films had problems, but I truly am judging this on its own merits. No comparing. But this films has major flaws coming from a Spidey fan. Everything I see from it just irks me the wrong way.

One more thing... The Raimi trilogy had TONS of practical effects, and this film will have TONS of CGI. You need both when making a Spider-man film, period. For example, the train fight in Spider-man 2 was mostly CGI, yet it was one of the most intense, exciting, accelerated, riveting, grandiose and best edited, choreographed, executed action sequences of all time. If they can make something that incredible shot-by-shot using 100% "practical effects," I say go for it.

Thanks dude. And I agree the radical change in Spidey's duds are unfortunately only to sell twice as many action figures. Last time they got around that by making his webs slightly grey in a certain light. Not sure this abomination was necessary.

Good shit, 2sday. I agree. I view this as the fundamental problem with Spider-Man/Peter Parker. Just as in the comics, they don't ever want to let Parker "grow up." As soon as he's married and working a normal job, the powers that be view him as "unmarketable." It's like the lose faith in the character that is built up so much by many a great writer. They erase continuity and "reboot" him in comics as well and with lackluster results.
However, with that said, I don't think a reboot is

However, with that said, I don't think a reboot is out of the question, you just have to stick to the source material. Otherwise, as you have pointed out, it's not a reboot, its a reimagining.
Curt Conners/The Lizard is every bit a second tier villain as Croc is to Batman. He's a gimmick villain.
It would be a ballsy and awesome move if they'd tackle something like "Kraven's Last Hunt" or even went as far as to do a Sinister Six story.
I have more faith in the character of Spider-Man, as do most fans, than those who control his "destiny," and that's unfortunate.
I guess we could all be pleasantly surprised by this one, but I'm not holding my breath. My expectations are so low that it could be f*cking Citizen Kane by the time I see it...on Netflix.
Good stuff, man.

Thanks Paul, means a lot coming from a "higher up." And yeah, I think this *might possibly *actually* be a decent film in the traditional sense, but from what I've seen and heard thus far (and I HAVE seen and heard enough), there is no way this will be a good Spider-man film. Unfortunately.

I hope people are rational enough to realize that action figure is more of a crude copy than anything substantial.

Tidbit: Probably not, but they could still be just regular spies I suppose.
