Oliver Platt joins the cast of X-Men: First Class as a non-mutant

Aug. 16, 2010by: Niki Stephens

Currently I'm awaiting word to be cast in X-MEN: FIRST CLASS.

Okay not really, but it feels like every other actor/actress in Hollywood has a part in this damn movie.

After James McAvoy as Xavier, Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Alice Eve as Emma Frost, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, Caleb Landry Jones as Banshee, Lucas Till as Havoc, Edi Gathegi as Darwin, Kevin Bacon as the villain, and Rose Byrne as Moira MacTaggert, we now have Oliver Platt joining as "The Man in Black". No relation to Johnny Cash.

Who is this mysterious man in black? I like to consider myself fairly knowledgeable in all things X-Men characters, but am drawing a blank for the Man in Black. The only details given by Deadline say that Platt's character is a non-mutant. However, while browsing the brilliant comic minds of the site, Comic Book Movie.com, an anonymous reader left a suggestion: Friedrich Von Roehm (aka the Black Rook). At first I thought this might make since because Von Roehm is a member of the Hellfire Club, which could then link Kevin Bacon as Sebastian Shaw. My excitement quickly drew to a halt when I realized that Von Roehm possessed abilities that closely resembled to lycanthropy.

I love Platt and welcome him to the cast list. But does anyone else have any ideas who he could be playing? Is there someone lost in the Marvel universe that I'm missing?

Extra Tidbit: On the subject of men in black, if anyone cares, a name for the man in black from LOST was revealed. For some reason you may not want this spoiled for you, so if you want to know head here.

Bolivar Trask is still who I hope Bacon is playing. They don't need a villain as big as Mr. Sinister yet. Assuming this isn't the last X-Men film.

Trask?

May have the names wrong but perhaps one of the original creators of the Sentinel program? I wanna say Bolivar Trask but its been a while on the names. The Sentinel program would be a good sub plot to build on and fits a little in the current film myth/lore since the Danger Room sequence from X3 seemed to already be programmed with a Sentinel for training purposes. If I'm right I am a little more excited for this flick.

He is so underrated.

I will go out of my way to see things that have Oliver Platt in it. One of my guilty pleasures is the absolutely ridiculous "Lake Placid." It was written by David E. Kelley it starred Bill Pullman, Bridget Fonda, Oliver Platt, as a rich billionare douchebag & Brendan Gleeson. It's a fun dumb flick, & Platt steals every scene he's in.

He should play....

The same character he played in LAKE PLACID only he captures mutants in this movie. And bring back Brendan Gleeson as a cop. Classic!

Shadow King, sometimes he's a mutant, but I feel some have written him as a different entity all together

You just might be correct about him being the shadow king, after all professer x does have to rescue storm from him. But shouldn't he be african.

At ComicVine, his bio said he worked with the Nazis and many of his early pics look Caucasian or like a light-skinned middle eastern, like an Israeli or something

This is another good addition to the cast, and Oliver Platt is always entertaining, but like some worry below, the cast might be getting a bit crowded. I'm all for different characters, but this might just be too many charcters and storylines all juggled at once. Like someone said below, Cyclops hasn't even been cast yet, or Jean Grey or Storm. Those are roles that should have been filled from the get go. I am a die hard fan of the X-Men and like Vaughn, so my hopes are high for this one.

Black Tom Cassidy?

Could Platt be playing Sean Cassidy's (Banshee's) cousin, the supervillain Black Tom Cassidy? Although in the comics he's a mutant.

Re: Tidbit

Wow, what a shocker! The name of the character on the casting call sheet was the name of the character. This is not news.

I loved Layer Cake and dug Stardust and Kick Ass, but the abundance of characters in this isn't giving me a warm, fuzzy feeling. Starting to sound like X3 and Wolverine when they were announcing all of their casting and characters...

Every movie Vaughn has made so far has been solid, so I'm staying firmly optimistic that he's going to make all this work.

The cast is starting to get crowded, and cyclops hasn't even been cast yet (same with Jean Grey and Storm but I'm not sure they're going to be in this movie at all). If I hadn't just seen Vaughn's awesome "Kick-ass", I'd be close to giving up on this project. The fact that fox is trying to rush this out for next summer worries me the most.
