Olivia Munn in talks to join Shane Black's The Predator; setting revealed

Olivia Munn The Predator Boyd Holbrook

With production on Shane Black's THE PREDATOR due to kick off next February, it seems that the cast has begun to come together. After Benicio del Toro sadly departed the project last month, the lead role was swiftly filled by Boyd Holbrook (LOGAN), and now THR has reported that Olivia Munn (X-MEN: APOCALYPSE) is currently in negotiations to join Holbrook in a starring role.

THR's report also contains a few details about what sort of characters Olivia Munn and Boyd Holbrook will be playing; apparently Munn's role is that of a scientist and Holbrook will be filling the combat boots of a Special Forces commando. As for the plot, we still don't know all that much just yet, but we do know that THE PREDATOR won't be taking place in the jungle, Los Angeles or on a alien world; Instead, our fearsome alien hunter will find himself in "the harsh environment of … suburbia." I can't imagine what would possibly bring a Predator to the suburbs, but with Shane Black at the helm, I'm certainly excited to find out.

Speaking of Black, the writer/director recently spoke exclusively with JoBlo's own Eric Walkuski and was asked whether he considers THE PREDATOR to be a sequel or a reboot. "I think it has to stand on its own two feet," said Black. "But our goal is to make sure it acknowledges that, yeah, it is 30 years later in the continuity of the story. In other words, Dutch Schaefer's patrol, which was attacked and largely slaughtered, happened 30 years ago in the context of the story. It's referenced, it's part of the mythology. In that way, it's more of a sequel than a reboot." THE PREDATOR is set for a February 9, 2018 release. As for Munn, she'll next be appearing in OFFICE CHRISTMAS PARTY on December 9, 2016.

Black stated he wanted this to feel like an event movie again, but with each new casting decision this feels more like a straight to DVD turd. How are the likes of the Rock and Atkins not involved. Better yet send the Predator to Asia and have him go up against some martial arts badasses like Iko Uwais or Donnie Yen.

Potential spoiler

Her character doesn't get killed! Given the Predator's track record when it comes to female victims (which sadly includes the AvP films and NO, technically that hybrid doesn't count) but who knows, that may change.

I can totally picture a scenerio;

Some middle-upper class dude spends most of his free time visting a country club gun range (Guntry..?) and is the resident badass among his buddies. His shooting skills suddenly grab the attention of the Predator who follows him home to his wife (possibly Olivia Munn) and her kids from (possibly Boyd Holdbrook) her first husband, who will be coming over to [Insert: Family Drama Reason] because the court said so.

Meanwhile the rich dude's buddies are killed off one by one till he realises he's next and fortifies his suburban home believing a serial killer is on the loose. Fortunately Boyd's character shows up quickly deduces the Predator is back based on some "classified info from 30yrs ago"

What follows next is a cat and mouse game in the mansion and the neighbourhood, and some tension about "posers with guns Vs actual Badasses with experience" type philosphical yada-yada conflict.

In the end the Predator is killed, the family is reunited with the previous love-interest and everyone lives happily ever after. Then after the credits Boyd's Spec Ops team meanwhile somewhere in [Insert: Middle East Nation] have followed some terrorists to a building but before they can attack, the terrorists are killed by the predator leaving the Spec Ops team wondering what happened and setting up the sequel "Predator : In the Desert this time"

Munn is like the female Jai Courtney

Everything she touches turns to shit. From Attack of the Show to her stupid grunting and ruining of Psylocke in Apocalypse. I will even blame her for making Ride Along 2 seem like a shitty movie.

I would have loved to have seen Del Toro stay on as the lead, and for Blunt to have been cast instead of Munn; would have been a nice Sicario reunion between the two badass' and would have given the movie a little bit more of an encouragement pulse in terms of anticipation amongst us fans.

I'm mostly excited for the combination of Predator and Christmas. I mean it's Shane Black so you know it's going to be set during the holidays.

Not really excited for this at all.

Funnily I don't really have a problem with the Olivia Munn casting, I'm not a fan of the Boyd Holbrook casting the guy was an absolute runt in Run All Night, so buying him as a commando is absurd, just like Adrien Brody in Predators, great actor but stupid as a special forces operative,um how to go from Arnold to two guys that look like they would blow away in the wind.

Munn's film roles haven't been great, but she actually impressed me with her role in The Newsroom. That show proved she does have some talent. Besides, it's not like the original Predator was cast with expert thespians.

Generally speaking any movie that lost Benicio del Toro then added Olivia Munn would be an absolute no-go for me. In this case I'll remain cautiously optimistic because Shane Black. Still... yeesh.
