Olivia Munn on why she doesn't think she has a shot at playing Wonder Woman

07.24.2013

<a data-cke-saved-href=

Olivia Munn has made it very clear that she loves Wonder Woman. A lot. The presenter and actress also gets a lot of love from the geek community due to her appearances at Comic-Con, and many fans would love to see her as the Amazon Princess. So why doesn't Munn believe she has a chance at the part if a WONDER WOMAN or JUSTICE LEAGUE movie happens?

In an interview with the Boston Herald, Olivia Munn says that part of the reason is there will be a lot of competition with bigger-name actresses, but also feels at least part of the reason might come down to her heritage:

It would be great, though, if the producers could make Wonder Woman an Asian-American, but that's probably not what they would do. I don't know a lot of Asian-American women who are getting great opportunities yet, and the other actresses (vying for the role) are probably really famous and Hollywood tends to go for the girls who are already in the big movies.

Changing the race of a character can really divide fans; just take a look at some of the comments in these articles about Michael B. Jordan possibly playing the Human Torch in FANTASTIC FOUR. I think most fans aren't racist, but they have this image of a character so embedded in their heads that their logical arguments end up sounding racist.  Personally, I think in some cases it might work and in others it won't, just like any other casting decision.

In this case I do think Olivia Munn would be a decent Wonder Woman, however I agree with Munn that since she isn't a well-known name it will probably prevent her from snagging the role. At least there are these pictures:

I liked her before she became mainstream and dumped the geek goddess. Back on AOTS she was great and genuinely looked like she liked geek culture. She only says these things now to keep her old geek fans happy.

She's not right for this part, and being Asian-American doesn't have anything to do with it for me. I think Diana should be something of an embodiment of all that's good and pure, so she should have a degree of sweetness and naivete but also be convincing as a woman who has been trained as a fearless warrior since childhood. That's a tough balance to strike that I don't think Munn has. She generally comes off not quite likeable and if you'll pardon the rudeness, kinda b*tchy. I don't think

Also, she is petty for throwing out the "because I'm an Asian-American" when she is a fairly attractive white girl with pretty rounded caucasian features. It's not like someone like Lucy Lu or Tia Carrare talking about not being cast for looking too asian. She knows she is just another brunette in a long line of actresses who want to do the role, and needed to whine about it.

Race aside, the only thing I want is a woman who can match Wonder Woman's stature in terms of physique and height. Wonder Woman is an Amazon Warrior and should look more intimidating than a much shorter actress. In all honesty, Wonder Woman should be Greek since her backstory is Greek Mythology.

To add on what Jeff said.

I'm black, and I agree with everything Jeff said. Now let me flip this, what if they cast Ryan Reynolds as Falcon, or Armie Hammer as Luke Cage, or Ryan Gosling as Black Panther? Go ahead and let that shut sink on in there, I'll wait......exactly!!! It doesn't matter if they changed a white character black or a black character white, I want to see them make the character on the silver screen as similar to their comic book archetypes. It's not fucking racist and I'm sick of people just saying

Yea they would pick up flack alright just for portraying the character the correct way if they cast a black dude. Just keep it simple stupid, no need to fuck up shit that's already been around for 30 plus years.

I'm black too, and thank goodness we don't all think alike.

I wouldn't mind an Asian-American Wonder Woman, but Olivia Munn isn't it because she doesn't have the acting chops. On the other hand, I like that Johnny Storm is rumored to be black (he is growing as a person since he has to learn and change from being arrogant, pompus, cocky - that's not a black stereotype that is SOMEONE WHO NEEDS TO GROW AS A PERSON! Also, he is a ladies man. Is that a black stereotype as well?

It looks like you as a black person is stereotyping black people.

And Ryan Reynolds isn't appealing to me as an actor or as Green Lantern, the same with Armie Hammer who doesn't scream 'charisma' and didn't appeal to audiences as The Lone Ranger. Bad choices for your examples.

Ryan Gosling embracing a certain 'blackness' as Black Panther? (Seeing whiteness from a different point of view?)I might get into that since Gosling seems to be a good actor.

Thank you JimThePariah, perfectly said. And to Joel_Kirk.. There already is a black Green Lantern, so you don't have to make Hal Jordan Black, they can just use John Stewart, who took over for Hal Jordan. What JimThePariah and I are trying to say is if they want to change a SuperHero's race then you have to change the character first. It has to do more with the alter ego of the SuperHero, eg. Bruce Wayne, John Stewart, than the actual Super Hero.

I'm just saying that the characters that are black in the comics are black for a reason, same with the white characters in the comics. Ryan Gosling embracing his blackness?! What the fuck are you talking about? Those actors I just brought up because they were the first people I thought of, not because I was trying to make a point about who could play them. Believe it or not but those are certain black stereotypes. And there is a reason why stereotype is stereotypes is because more often than

What the fuck are you talking about? Those actors I just brought up because they were the first people I thought of, not because I was trying to make a point about who could play them. Believe it or not but those are certain black stereotypes. And there is a reason why stereotype is stereotypes is because more often than not a majority of people in a certain class/race adhere to those characteristics in a mass amount than others. Take a fucking sociology class or something. Guess what I like chicken and watermelon, not because I'm black but because it fucking taste good. Everyone likes chicken and watermelon but do you know where that stereotype came from? Watermelon patches in the south were a way to resist the master during slave times. Slaves would silently sabotage the watermelon patches by eating, destroying, and poisoning the watermelons. Well they mostly ate them. They were easy to grow and had numerous amounts of seeds to plant multiple patches. The butchers would throw away the feet, wings and head of the chicken in the butcher shop, same with certain things from a pig such as pigs feet and the intestine-(which is what you would call chitlins, which I also enjoy)-blacks could easily access these items for sustenance. After slave days and into the modern age black people continue to eat these in many areas of the US and even in the south.

Now what i was trying to getti was that stereotypes are real and they are real for a certain reason. That's why there is a thing called racial profiling and psychological profiling also. It's not wrong or racist, it's true depending on the origins. I grew up in Detroit and you could run me through the gamut of stereotypes and ill probably come away with 90% of it for me being true, that's just who I am stereotype or not. So the common Johnny Storm stereotypes rings true o me as a young adolescent black kid.

Jeff Knite, I didn't say anything about making Hal Jordan black. I said that Ryan Reynolds doesn't appeal to me as an actor and as Green Lantern, no matter the version he is playing.

And to Jim: What the fuck am I talking about? I'm talking about a hypothetical film about Ryan Gosling embracing the struggles of black individuals in a hypothetical movie where he could play Black Panther.

And yes, Jim, based on your posts...you DO come off as an adolescent.:)

To counter the point... Black Panther, Luke Cage, Falcon, War Machine, etc. etc....they were all characters created AFTER the de facto ban on black superheroes came crashing down in the late 60s and early 70s as part of the Civil Rights movement. Before Black Panther came along in 67-68...racist publishers didn't allow any superheroes to be non-white. So for the first 40 years of comics from the 1930s through the , when Spiderman, the Fantastic Four, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman etc. etc.

As well, with characters like Black Panther and Luke Cage and others...their race is part of their identity, part of the backstory. I'm the biggest Batman fan you can come across, and I can't think of one thing in his origin story that says he has to be white. Steve Rogers yes (because he's a figure from a particular era) Bruce Wayne no.

Coming from a guy who wants a white James Bond and a not gay Peter Parker...I don't have a problem with an Asian American playing Wonder Woman - a different skin colour might help in this case - make her character’s foreign background standout. I remember when they cast the voice for Hawkgirl in the Justice League cartoon they went with an Hispanic actress - with the thinking that her foreign accent would add to the feeling of her being an alien (lolzzz - yeh, Americans, I know) and I'm

It's why I never had issue when I read (for real or not) names like Priyanka Chopra or that Brazilian actress that showed up in the Incredible Hulk being linked to the role. Though personally, having seen Jaimie Alexander in the Last Stand and clips of her in the next Thor movie - she's my favourite for the role.

I think Olivia hasn't been seen enough. She is amazing in The Newsroom. She isn't just an eye candy character. So before everyone jumps on this hate Parade realize that Comedy is the hardest Genre and she is comfortable in the Daily Show skits as she is in Newsroom. Now if they made a future Batman like Bat Man Beyond where Batman bangs a puerto rican women and their child is puerto rican and takes on the mantle of Bat Man, I would love that, because I'll get a puerto Rican Bat Man whose Origins are actually Fucking Puerto Rican. Sorry for the rant.

Like another commenter below, I enjoy The Newsroom and Olivia's character Sloan is pretty quick with the Sorkin monologues and wit needed to pull the lines off convincingly. Having said that, it's the dialogue that makes her character work; I'm not sold that she is actually carrying the character with her acting chops.

The rumors that Beyoncè was going to play Lois Lane all those drafts of Superman ago? Fuck no, simply because she was being considered because she was Beyoncè. No other reason.
If an actress of any race wants to tackle Wonder Woman (mind out of the gutter kids), go for it. But make sure it's someone with some ability in the realm of acting and not a Kardashian.

She's definitely one of the highlights on 'The Newsroom.' More than most of the actors she clicks well with Sorkin's fast-paced, wonky dialog. And I'm far from a Munn fanboy...never really saw the appeal on AOTS or her six appearances on The Daily Show.

Though if she wants to focus her ire on anyone in particular for Asian-American actors not getting a fair shake at major franchise roles...it ain't the studios but the "purist" fanboys who goosestep their rage into the comments sections of any story where its suggested a comic book role might go to a non-white actor. Because we should totally let the racial prejudices that existed 70 years ago when these characters were created dictate casting decisions today. In 1941, the year Wonder Woman was first introduced...comic book artists couldn't publish an Asian superhero even if they wanted to. Any Asian character not depicted with green skin or vampire fangs was left on the cutting room floor.

Still though, Munn wouldn't be my choice for Wonder Woman...I'm 100% team Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Munn would make a good Janet Pym (especially if Edgar Wright or Joss Whedon are supplying the script.)

Okay, thats my spiel. Go ahead and flame me down.

You're the one who sounds Racist. We don't get mad when a comic book role goes to a non-white actor. We get mad when they change the race of a major character for no reason, whether they be white, black, asian, hispanic etc. If you are focusing only on the white characters being changed, then you my friend are the racist. Nobody was mad when they changed Nick Fury black because his character lends itself to change, but if they made Blade white or Batman black I would be furious because these are

Except plenty of people were pissed off when Samuel L. Jackson was cast as Nick Fury simply because Jackson is black. People conveniently forgot about all the hate only because Jackson kicks crazy ass in portraying him. Ditto Idris Elba as Heimdall.

Just look at the hate that happened when one of the many 'Batmen' of Batman Inc. was an Algerian Muslim or that the new Ultimate Spiderman is a black latino.

Casting decisions should be made on story and talent. There is nothing about Batman's backstory that says he has to be white. Steve Rogers has to be white because of his backstory, and I'd similarly argue for Hal Jordan. But not Bruce Wayne or Clark Kent or Barry Allen or Peter Parker. You can cast those roles based purely on who auditions best for the role.

Michael B. Jordan would make a phenomenal Johnny Storm and I hope like hell he's cast.

And honestly, if fanboys are going to be purists like this they should at least be consistent and condemn any notion of an Anglo-Saxon woman playing Wonder Woman. A Greek, Israeli, or dare I say Arab actress would fit in better with a heroine rooted in Mediterranean myth.

"We're just plain use to it." HA!

What if Thor was played by a black man? What if Dolemite was white? This argument is silly. If i'm a director, and want to stay true to what was written down, I would definitely try to keep the characters whatever race they are. It's not some sort of racist fanboy-ism, it's trying to remain true to the characters that are presented.

Why couldn't Thor be played by a black guy? Thor isn't the story of a white guy, its the story of an alien from outer fucking space.

Idris Elba played Heimdall and he was awesome. I'd totally watch someone like John Boyega or even Terry Crews swing that hammer around. If Chris Hemsworth was from Nigeria instead of Australia would that mere fact outweigh his pitch perfect performance and endlessly badass charm in the role?

I keep coming back to this point....until the late 60s, comic book artists and authors were simply not allowed by either publishers or the buying public to make non-white superheroes. And while there are plenty of tremendous black characters in comics in the decades since...Black Panther, War Machine, Falcon and Blade will never be as iconic or profitable as Batman, Superman, Spiderman, and Wonder Woman. So when the casting call for Justice League goes out, if it says 'blacks, latinos, and asians need not apply' that is just a further perpetuation of the institutionalized racism of decades ago. Justice League had better not look like a Riefenstahl film.

It's not a perpetuation because the characters that we are talking about are white. If someone was written as a white guy, let it be a white guy. It's not racist if you keep it to the story and what the character is described or written as.

It's not institutionalized racism if that's what they want for the movie they are making. If I want to make a biopic of Abraham Lincoln, am I going to go for the historically accurate Lincoln? Or am I going to hire a Latino to do it. If we traded

It's not racism to hire white people for parts that have white people characters. It's just not.

You are aware that Abraham Lincoln was like...a real person, right? Not a fictional character?

I guess this is the divergence. I just don't see most comic book characters as 'white' characters. That Batman is white has rarely if ever been an important plot device through 75 years of the comic book. Has been for Steve Rogers, has been for Hal Jordan...but not Bruce Wayne, and certainly not Clark Kent who's an alien to begin with. You can cast an actor of any race or ethnicity and so long

And Wonder Woman as written isn't 'white' in the Anglo-Saxon Lynda Carter sense. She's Mediterranean. So if you really believe characters should be what they're written as...not only are you proving Olivia Munn's point, but you should also be getting equally pissed off anytime some actress not ethnically Greek or Turkish or Italian or Syrian is considered for the role.

Nobody is being racist if they want a comic book character that is white, to be white in the movie they are trying to make. The over analysis of this matter that you are presenting is ridiculous.

Well wait a second, this is acting. By your logic, the race shouldn't matter. Or does it?

You're not getting the part because you're stupid and annoying, Olivia.

It bears repeating...

I know it's already been said a few times by previous posters, but it bears repeating. She's just a shitty actress. That is the only thing holding her back.

Meh...

Don't really get the appeal of her. Just get naked, that's all anybody would wanna see from her anyways. It's the reason why I saw Magic Mike. Thankfully her tits were in the beginning so I just stopped watching after that.

I don't think it's race that's preventing her from getting the role. In fact, I think Wonder Woman is one of the few comic characters where you could get away with experimenting with a change in race for the movies. I think what's preventing her from being considered for the role is the fact that she's not a good actress.

really?

Race? Again? I'm betting the problem is the size of that chip on your shoulder when you go to auditions.

She would be as good as Jessica Alba was in Fantastic Four, which was horrible.

I like Olivia. Maybe they could cast her in a Wonder Woman movie in a supporting role.
