Once again, Twin Peaks will break the network TV mold with upcoming season 3

When last we heard from Twin Peaks, it was the news that the show might air sometime between April and June 2017. That vagueness seemed appropriate for the loopy David Lynch project, but things are getting even stranger. In this widely varied, malleable climate for content distribution, Twin Peaks might just dive into the deep end.

Says Showtime CEO David Nevins:

Everything about Twin Peaks is going to be unconventional — unconventional in the handling of it and how we put it out in the world and how we market. I want to embrace the unusualness of it, and I think it is quite possible we’re not going to do a traditional release pattern. I don’t know exactly what that means yet. I’ve had a couple of conversations with [Lynch]. I can definitely see longer episodes or the question of how we release it linearly and for those who want to stream it.

We've heard rumors that Lynch has shot what amounts to two full seasons of content, so I hope he doesn't carve too much away. While they're experimenting, maybe it would be cool if they released one hour every week until it depletes. We've gotten Netflix binge seasons, Internet mini series, and all kinds of alternative TV experiences, but I've never seen a mega season that lasts a year. I'd love for Twin Peaks to be that show. It broke the TV mold back in the 90's, so why not again?

Returning cast members will include:

Kyle MacLachlan, Sheryl Lee, Sherilyn Fenn, Dana Ashbrook, Madchen Amick, Miguel Ferrer, David Patrick Kelly, Richard Beymer, and Lynch himself. Possibly joining that list are Lynch's Twin Peaks co-creator Mark Frost, Frost's father Warren Frost, Ray Wise, Grace Zabriskie, Peggy Lipton, Everett McGill, Wendy Robie, James Marshall, Al Strobel, Kimmy Robertson, Harry Goaz, Charlotte Stewart, Gary Hershberger, Jan D'Arcy, Harry Dean Stanton, and maybe Catherine E. Coulson, who may have filmed some scenes before she passed away last September.

New cast members to be featured are:

Amanda Seyfried, Peter Sarsgaard, Balthazar Getty, Robert Knepper, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Bailey Chase, Laura Dern, Robert Forster, Naomi Watts, Tom Sizemore, Grant Goodeve, Larry Clarke, Caleb Landry Jones, James Belushi, Ashley Judd, Michael Cera, Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, Ernie Hudson, Derek Mears and Trent Reznor.
