Oscar Isaac says shooting Star Wars Episode IX feels “looser” than last two

As each new Star Wars movie begins filming the pressure must certainly get heavier and heavier as fans expect more and more from each outing, demanding everything from an expansion of the lore to the perfect shade of blue and red on the lightsabers. But Oscar Isaac – who played Poe Dameron in THE FORCE AWAKENS and THE LAST JEDI, the best pilot to fly an X-Wing since Luke Skywalker – isn’t feeling the stress on the set of STAR WARS: EPISODE IX, and he revealed in a new interview that this time around the vibe is much more relaxed.

The actor was speaking with IndieWire and talked about this time around the process of making this massive, expensive space epic feels “looser” than the past two outings. A big reason for that is likely because FORCE AWAKENS director J.J. Abrams is back in the saddle, and the director often encourages the cast to play with the material in ways that feel right to them.

“The way they’ve been shooting it right now is looser than it’s been for the last two times. It does feel like a relief to get on set and feel like, ‘Oh, we can try things.’ It’s a testament to J.J. coming back and feeling confident. There’s less pressure for it to be right. We just want to make a good movie and have a really good time while doing it.”

Isaac continued, talking about how this more improvisational style is the result of the crew feeling more comfortable in their roles, not feeling like they have to work so hard to bring something new to the franchise.

“Often, you do feel like you’ve got to find your way to make something more alive, but this time, it’s been the opposite,” he said. “There’s no need to smuggle anything in there.”

There will be a lot of details about the untitled movie kept close to the chest for now and until summer 2019, most likely, and fans will be speculating over everything until the movie gets released December 20, 2019.
