Oscar winner John Ridley developing a Marvel Comics superhero series at ABC

04.17.2015

Looks like Marvel and ABC are planning on expanding their small screen offerings outside of S.H.I.E.L.D. with a new superhero series. Aside from the rumored spin-off of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Marvel Studios is working with 12 YEARS A SLAVE screenwriter John Ridley to develop a new show based on an existing Marvel Comics hero.

There is no word on which hero Ridley may be working with, but ABC is likely looking at the success of Daredevil on Netflix and aiming to do something more superhero-centric than they have with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter. Both series have still been pulling in good ratings although nothing close to the buzz Daredevil has received. Ridley currently executive produces the ABC drama American Crime so he has an existing relationship with the network. His acclaim and awards would make him a marquee name to bring a hero to the small screen.

The question becomes which hero could it be? While ABC and Marvel declined to comment on the new series, the sources were clear that it would be about a superhero. I would think The Punisher is too risky for a network and would be a better fit for Netflix, but it could still be possible. Stay tuned for more as this develops.

Whatever it is Ridley has the easy task of making it better than ABC's other 2 Marvel shows.

I'll put my money on Deathlok. They said they were developing a spinoff from Shield that would interact with it. Deathlok makes perfect sense. The character already exists, and can expand on his superheroness while crossovers with AOS would feel natural instead of forced.

Those mentioning Punisher or Moonknight or CLoak and Dagger. The Marvel Knights/Defenders crew I think would be best served on Netflix. Those characters exists in a darker more grisly world than AOS or ABC would do in my

Those characters exists in a darker more grisly world than AOS or ABC would do in my opinion. I am completely with @martinphipps on that. And frankly I'm happy about it. I love ABC's Marvel offerings, and I hope for more of them. But I do like the tonal differences between ABC and Netflix and I think ABC should remain the more light characters and Netflix the dark. Gives all of a nice balance to watch different sides of the same coin. We're all the richer for it.

Either Spider-Woman or Deathlok. Personally, I would prefer Spider-Woman over Deathlok but given the overtones of the Deathlok story (as a black man who was forced to work for Hydra) and the background of the proposed show runner, I'm thinking it will be Deathlok. Moon Knight, Punisher, Blade and Ghost Rider would work better on Netflix.

Since when is Agents of Shield pulling good ratings? Last I checked, they had started at over 10 millions and were barely pulling 4 millions viewers now.

unghhhh

too many shows. Im ok with there being like 20 movies in the mcu and a few shows here and there. If they dropped the 24 episode schedules for shield and made it television event seasons (6-13 episodes ala daredevil) id be more receptive.

...well, the thing is, he DOES have to watch it. If more and more TV shows like this get introduced, then you'll HAVE to watch all of them to fully understand the Marvel Universe. Average movie goers will probably be able to watch only the MCU movies and still get the gist of what's happening, but to really, fully understand everything (which, based on what I've seen from The_ConMan's comments on this site, he does) you'll have to spend 8 hours a week watching their new TV series'. It's cool in

It's cool in a way, but also a bit of a pain in the ass, especially when the shows are kind of underwhelming but still so important to the plot.

No different to collecting comics though, eh? In the end I had to stop collecting them coz it was costing me an arm and a leg collecting the regular ones, the spins off's and the limited series spins off's!

I'm feeling Blade

It will probably be Blade. Wesley may make a cameo but he won't be the star.

I don't think Marvel can properly do a Blade series on ABC. It would be too dark and would have to be more towards what Marvel is doing with Daredevil on Netflix.

That was my next thought, Soloist. BUT, I believe in this day and age Marvel can pull off a decent enough Blade on network television... sure, I'd rather see it on Netflix where they can kick it up a notch but, it doesn't necessarily have to be a potty mouthed, T&A gore-fest to be good. Although, sometimes it doesn't hurt.

Why are you feeling Blade?

After seeing Daredevil, I say any Blade show sure as Hell better not be on a network.
