Oscar winners are...

02.25.2008

JoBlo.com's own Editor-in-Chief, Mike Sampson, was the man on the keyboard last night, with LIVE OSCAR UPDATES that had me cracking up alongside Jon Stewart, who I believe did another pretty solid job as the maestro this year. And is it me or does the dude look super-relaxed up there? Maybe it's from that habit he picked up on HALF BAKED? Anyway, I won't bore you with my two cents on the evening, but needless to say, I was very happy that the Coen brothers received all that praise after all their years of superior filmmaking. Go brosephs! Unfortunately the duo don't seem as talkative as the many quirky characters from their films, but hey...you can't have everything, right?

Another pitiful "prediction" year for myself this time around, as I only scored 52/100, despite picking Tilda Swinton off as "Best Supporting Actress" (I scored 53/100 last year). We'll be posting all of your scores from our 8TH ANNUAL OSCAR PREDICTION CONTEST tomorrow, so stay tuned for that.

In terms of the Oscar movies themselves, the Coen bros' NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN ended up with the most wins this year (4), while a surprising film finished with the second most wins: THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM (3). Mind you, all three of BOURNE's awards had to do with sound or editing...not that there's anything wrong with that! Only two other films had more than one victory on the evening, and they were THERE WILL BE BLOOD (2) and again surprisingly, LA VIE EN ROSE (2). ATONEMENT, MICHAEL CLAYTON and JUNO each ended up with only 1 win on their side. Oh well. Another year, another drunken melee between Jim Law and Johnny Moreno at the JoBlo.com offices (if we had offices, that is). PS: Jack Nicholson. Should he just stay home next year? Discuss amongst yourselves.

Actually, it's about rewarding good performances, regardless of language, so do yourself a favor and actually SEE Marion Cotillard's performance, which has been available on DVD now since November. Ellen Page? Pfft, she has a Golden Schmoe, she was better in Hard Candy.

Good show, even if I saw everything coming except for certain categories (Actress and Supporting Actress).

Pretty by the book..

You could have seen everything coming except Marion Cotillard - LA VIE EN ROSE for best actress. Enough with the foreign actors winning American awards! Have a whole foreign awards sub-category if you feel you need it. For the rest of us, we want the actors in the movies we actually SEE win the awards! As for the broadcast, Stewart was great, but we need to shorten it by 2 hours. Stop televising the awards we don't really care to see the winners of like documentary short, animated short.

Yea, yea, you won an Oscar - that should be enough - you don't need the screen time too! Oh and for all those 'Norbit' comments - the nomination was for make-up and if you don't think that Rasputia's fat ass was realistic enough to get a nomination - you're a moron!

I was expecting things to go fairly "by the book," but there were certainly a few surprises. Tilda Swinton taking Best Supporting was interesting, as was the fact that "Bourne" had the second highest number of awards (I nearly choked on my drink when it swiped Editing from under "No Country" and "Blood's" noses). I can't comment on "Juno" taking Screenplay, since I haven't seen it yet, but it was pretty f*cking obvious that Cody was gonna win. I mean, come on, she's an ex-stripper turned

So overall, I'd have to say that it was a fairly entertaining evening. Now if only Johnny Depp could actually WIN something ...

Hmmm...

I think everyone that won was deserving of an Oscar,(except Diablo Cody.)I'm just waiting for the Oscar to finally go to Johnny Depp (Daniel is always deserving and did outshine Depp this past year.)

And Trendkill24hour, calling someone else a fascist automatically makes you one.

Fascist - (in part)suppressing opposition and criticism.

"Falling Slowly was by far the best song nominated this year, and it makes me happy that it won over three shitty Disney songs. Trendkill, you obviously just don't know what musical passion sounds like. Would you rather have had "Happy Working Song" be the winner? Yeck!"

Did you actually see Enchanted? I found it to be fun as hell and one of the best Disney flicks in awhile. I was personally hoping that That's How You Know Would win, but hey, can't win 'em all. I hear Once was great, so

i'm relieved on one thing...

Even though it shouldn't have been nominated in the first place, at least Norbit didn't win anything. That just would have been sad...

I'm with you on "Once" being the highlight of the evening, mostly because I really wanted them to win. It seems whatever movie doesn't have multiple songs nominated is the one that wins.

Surprised (non altogether unpleasantly) that Tilda Swinton took home the Oscar. I guess between the fact that Amy Ryan is a virtual unknown playing the sort of person not usually associated with gettting awards, and the fact Cate already has one, they decided to show Tilda their admiration instead.

Might sound stupid...

but Once winning best song was the highlight of my night. And yes, I am going against the breasts below me but the whole movie was totally different from all the same shit we see. I love action and horror films and this simple film actually touched me.

And them performing the song, the arrogant line by Stewart and her coming back out, just added to it.

Ireland: 1 Disney: 0

I can understand why out of all the songs in ONCE, it was "Falling Slowly" that they nominated. But honestly, after 3 Dumbshit Mafia won, do we really care about best song anymore? It's not like people are really making musicals like they used to.

And can I just be the one person who says that ONCE was a movie filled full of those songs, so for all the people who were fired up praising it, let me tell you that it just sounded like a whine-fest to me. That droned on.... and on... and on...

No Country deserved what it got. Bourne Ultimatum I was shocked by, 3 fucking Oscars. Then the Golden Compass won best CGI, that was a WTF moment. I'm glad to see people actually realized Juno didn't deserve anything except most original screenplay.

Oscars WTF!!! heres what I thought

No County for old men - awesome movie, deserves what it got!

D D Lewis - is always worthy

Bourne Ultimanium - 3 oscars?!?!?! WTF!!

Golden Compass - to all those academy members that voted this as best special effects are either blind or retarded.

Sicko - thank god that fat facist piece of shit Micheal Moore didnt win!!!!

Once "falling slowly" - This is by far the most annoying song ive heard in my entire life. I have heard 90 year old men

Once "falling slowly" - This is by far the most annoying song ive heard in my entire life. I have heard 90 year old men with lung cancer sing better then that shit. The fact that that song was even nominated makes me want to cut my ears off and never listen to music ever again. The song would of sound better if a sheep bleeding to death sang it. Then again Ive never trusted the academy with music (Three six mafia, anyone??)

Overall this year was alright, because No Country for old Men was fucking amazing and deserved best picture (and unlike some people that claim it was overrated I actually saw all five films to justify that). The Cohen brothers are awesome.

The technical awards for The Bourne Ultimatum is the Oscar's way of saying "Sorry we couldn't give you Best Picture, let alone a nomination for it, since you are after all an ACTION FILM and also because of the bureacracy that goes on within the Academy that no genre flicks should be nominated for any of the more prestigious awards. But this should do!"

Hello... Oscar people?

This is how the best actress thing works:

You give the GOLDEN GLOBE to the French actress who did a good job, like the pat on the head that she deserves.

You then give the golden statuette that MATTERS to the American (or faux-American - aka British) who is due. Grrrr. I lost 8 points because of that French tart. Dammit.

Yeah, I'm really glad Marion won best actress. Still, I think NCFOM is a bit overrated, and didn't deserve Best Pic. I would've put Gone Baby Gone in its place. That's just me, though.

Whatever man. It wouldn't be the Academy Awards without mah man Jack in the front row with those kick ass shades of his!

It was a good night overall I thought. Loved the Marion Cotillard upset. She was amazing in that movie and I'm so glad she won! That was definitely a highlight for me.
