Outland remake

08.19.2009

The remake rocket launches into the cosmos with an update of OUTLAND, Peter Hyam's 1981 sci-fi flick featuring Sean Connery as a deep space lawman.

Warner Bros. has handed the new version to SHOOT 'EM UP director Michael Davis, who says "We're staying true to the thematic heart of 'Outland' while expanding the space frontier concept."

The original was also a slow burn, although we probably shouldn't expect similar pacing and subtlety from the guy who put Clive Owen in gunfights while he was plummeting from an airliner and giving Monica Bellucci the meat dazzler.

The original OUTLAND (basically HIGH NOON in space) starred Connery as a Marshal assigned to a mining colony on Jupiter's moon Io, where he uncovers a drug trade and finds himself the target of an assassination squad. Get a taste of Betamax-era space thrills below.

Extra Tidbit: The original flick also featured pre-"Cheers" John Ratzenberger.

Remaking Outland? Forget it. I wonder if Pierce Brosnan will play Sean Connery's character.lol

The movie borrowed alot of it's style from Alien. That feel of practical industrial work in space.
The look of the sets and even the soundtrack are Alien-like.

Great original

I am a huge fan of Connery's Outland. I watch it on dvd probably once a month.

Giving this story a modern tech cgi boost will be fun. But I liked the slow-pace this film had, I don't know if I want crazy crazy crazy action 'puking' over this story :/

I've seen the original, and it's definitely a fun ride, but it's pretty cheesy and flawed as well. I'm pretty sure they could actually improve on the original (gasp!) with a remake.

The basic theme of the original...

... Outland was Exploding Heads when exposed to the vacuum of space.

I look forward to this being updated.

I just watched this today...

... and I was quite impressed. It's a really good and under-the-radar sci-fi western, featuring Sean Connery no less. With that said, I don't really want a remake-- why not jusy re-release the original with a special edition Blu-Ray/DVD to expand it to a wider audience? Besides, there's NO substitute for Connery.

Anyway, check out the original if you haven't stumbled upon it yet guys/gals, it gets a stamp of approval from me.
